No sound: Puppy 4.0 on Dell Dimension 5100- Problem Solved

#1 Post by FrankH »

Problem- no sound: Puppy 4.0 on Dell Dimension 5100 with integrated Intel sound chip; booted from USB thumbdrive.

gxine launches and seems to think it is working, but no sound at speakers or headphone jack.

Volume setting set high in gxine and not muted.

Volumn setting on speakers themselves also set high.

Extract from etc/modprobe.conf file:
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF verion 1.0.8 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

Any ideas to turn on sound greatly appreciated.

hi frank,

i think you have to edit some options to the modprobe.conf. With a look at this http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=22383
it might be that:

# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF verion 1.0.8 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-3stack

reboot and hope.

cheers

No sound Puppy 4.0 on Dell Dimension 5000

#3 Post by FrankH »

aragon,

Thanks for you reply.

From this website you directed me to:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=22383

I determined that the following were the possible options for STAC9220/9221 on my Dell Dimension 5100:

ref Reference board
3stack D945 3stack
5stack D945 5stack + SPDIF
dell-d81 Dell (unknown)
dell-d82 Dell (unknown)
dell-m81 Dell (unknown)
dell-m82 Dell XPS M1210

I edited the modprobe.conf file options statement for each possible option, such as:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

For each option, I changed and saved the file and rebooted. Unfortunately, no sound at the speakers for any choice. In fact, for the dell-m-82 option, the pc hung on re-booting and didn't even go to a unix # prompt; I had to power cycle the pc, boot into Windows, and copy an older version of the pup_save.2fs from my hard drive to the USB thumbdrive I was booting from. (The messages went by too fast during the failed boot to capture the exact problem other than it had something to do with m82).

So that's where I am right now. Thanks for your guidance, and any more thoughts you might have on getting sound from my speakers will be greatly appreciated.

Hey FrankH ,On second thought have you opened the console an typed in:

# alsamixer (then hit enter)

and see how your mixer is set up.

No Sound: Puppy 4.0 on Dell Dimension 5100

#6 Post by FrankH »

aragon,

I ran alsamixer, from both the desktop icon and from the command prompt. Curiously it seems to be a 'dead' window, doesn't do anything, cursor doesn't change shape when passed over alsamixer window. I did a re-install of alsamixer, same result. Sounds like it did not install properly and I need to download a new package from the alsa website. ( I am not familiar yet how to install packages in Puppy, but that is another thing I need to learn).

I also ran sGmixer to make sure it was not muted, still no sound. But not sure unmuting sGmixer will also unmute alsamixer if it is somehow in the mute state.

I also installed the xine media player, also resulted in no sound at speakers.

No no ,Get the mixer console on the screen showing the bars and of course you do that by opening console and typing in Alsamixer ,then when you press enter you should see vertical bars .On the four arrow keys at the bottom of your keyboard left ,right,up and down.bypressing the right arrow key once the bar selection will move one place to the right, then pressing the up arrow you should see the bar rise and the down arrow key will make the bar decrease or come down.Set them all at about 75 and after that hit the Esc key to exit.try it

Ah, stupid me!! I thought the window was by mouse control, didn't consider that it is keyboard control.

The settings were already set pretty high, and I made them a little higher using arrow keys, but still no sound at speakers. I don't see a mute control in the mixer, am I missing it somehow?

Thanks again.

No Frank, No stupidity here, just another newbie to a different operating system just like alot of us. Ok about muting ,If you open the Alsamixer you will see some little boxes with MM in them, they are muted,With the right arrow key cursor over to one of them and press m ,you will notice this box changes to OO which means it is active and if you press m again it will go inactive with MM again.in the box If you look at the top of the Alsamixer screen you will see some writing change as the conditiions change,Just press m and m again and again and you will see it.Make sure none a muted.good luck, bill

OK Frank ,here is a saying that I have read many times on this forum and it says "Google is my friend" and to me there is more truth than poetry here.Since you are in SeaMonkey just press Search on the upper right of the SeaMonkey browser and a Google window will open, type in "alsamixer view" and it will tell you where to read this info,It is how I copied the link below.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsamixer#View_Modes

Also in this forum there is a "search" tab that will allow you to search a specific topic or post by a specific user just by typing in his/her forum name. This is useful but I have found a little more difficult to use than Google except if you can find specific explanations that have already been addressed.I do hope I have helped create a monster. Have fun, bill

Problem solved- No Sound: Puppy 4.0 on Dell Dimension 5100

#11 Post by FrankH »

Bill,

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Solution hidden in plain sight, I suppose. 'MM" on the alsamixer 'Front" tuner. Right arrow to the tuner, type 'm', and voila, sound! I would never had guessed this myself in a hundred years. Thanks for the insight.

BTW- this is not the first time that I have been tripped up by a 'hidden' mute button; MS Windows has it's own way of doing it to you.

FrankH

PS- thanks also to aragon for your assistance.

Anyway to link the Fn keyboard control for sound in PuppyLinux.
WinXP works fine for this.

Hi newbie314,

Are you trying to ask how the Fn key can be used to control sound in Puppy, or are you saying that's how you control sound in Puppy?

I'm afraid I still haven't caught your drift Newbie314.

But if you are asking how to use your laptop's volume buttons to control sound Sven's topnotch for the job. I use it on my laptop.
