How can I install FREEVO in Puppy? (For multimedia PC)

#1 Post by nandhu »

Hi All,

How can I install freevo in puppy?

rpm packages are available for freevo, so are yum and apt-get method.

This would help me to have a multimedia pc of puppy.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Nandhu.
Thanks,
Nanda.

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies. I tried booting for Dyne:Bolic live CD it worked to some extent, but it would not work if I have a Wireless USB based Keyboard and Mouse. :(

I tried movix, but I think it still lags few of the freevo bit to be a full fledged multimedia PC thingy.

I tried GeexBoX and it did took a long time to boot of the CD and then retains the CD/DVD drive, in the sense unlike Puppy it cannot release the CD/DVD drive on which you could then pop a music CD or film DVD and play of the drive.

I installed FREEVO on Fedora Core 4 and on Kanotix without lot of problems. I would'nt say it was trouble free to get it running on FC4, but it was almost trouble free to get it running on Kanotix_RC11 (a variant of Debian SID).

The idea of trying to have it on Puppy linux is that you could have a multisession carriable (based on USB Keys - I personally don't think carrying CD day in day out is easy whereever you go is that easy) OS which can also be a mind blowing Multimedia PC.

I've a USB based Puppy (allinonePuppy) which can run by itself booted of USB or within Linux/Unix environment or in Windows environment because of Qemu emulator.

Thanks to Puppy and All In One Puppy team for making this a reality.

I've been told in another thread that it is possible to compile freevo or similar things in Vector linux and then create a dotpup installer for freevo. I've to make some free space in my hard drive to install Vector and then give that one a try. With time and effort i think i'll achieve it, and then I'll post it here. In the mean time if someone else can afford the time and effort it is much appreciated.

Nandu.
Thanks,
Nanda.

I am intrigued by your description of your 'USB based Puppy (allinonePuppy)' but haven't found any reference to it on the forum.

Could you give a pointer to this reference or perhaps write a short howto for making this versatile 'allinonePuppy' ? I would love to know how you did it. :)

nandu, thanks for your information. I'm really impressed with this Puppy! Marvelous documentation. I will download it and give it a try.

I just installed freevo on a slackware system, twasn't an easy task and some of the required Python addons are huge as well as the codecs and MPlayer it self. I think if you going to package it there really would have to be a section of the install script that checks for enough freespace

I think the best would be to start from scratch and completely remaster Puppy for Freevo. On saying that I reallt am impressed with Freevo.

sunburnt_

Bare bones Puppy's a good starting place.

I found in another forum "puppy-bare-bones-1.0.3.iso", a stripped down Pup.
Search the download sites for it, I think it's a good start for a FreevoPup.

I'd be interested in FreevoPup as I've been looking at PVR setups.

Keep it lean, so it can run in 64mb of memory for just a video player,
more memory would probably be needed for video recording.

nandhu I used KDE binaries from slax .mo modules they seem to be working fine except for a few glitches which are on their way out with help from MU, pizzasgood and other testers

Slax package repository has freevo.mo and whatever other dependencies that would be required should be available in the devel modules section (eg python)

how to extracting .mo is posted in the how to section of puppy forum
