hplip and hpliplite packages

#1 Post by lluamco »

hpliplite latest version is 3.10.5
hpliplite official version is 3.9.8 (for puppy 4.xx)
hplip latest version is 3.9.2

hpliplite packages are "lite" versions the Hewlett-Packard's Linux Imaging and Printing software HPLIP.

They allow Printing and also Scanning (for HP PSC models, for instance).
Other hplip utilities are NOT included (hp-toolbox, hp-setup, fax,...).
The "lite" versions are not bloated as the full ones (Version 3.9.8 is only 4.5 MB, expanding to about 10MB when installed).
They do not require python and other big packages.
For this reason, hpliplite packages are recommended for puppy.

Please check whether your printer is supported by hplip and if requires additional plugins, at
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/su ... bined.html

If your printer requires plugins, please proceed as follows:
1. Download the appropriate plugin from http://www.linuxprinting.org/download/p ... P/plugins/
2. Download and install the attached install_hp_plugin-2.0.pet (see below)
3. run the plugin installation program in a rxwt terminal:

Code: Select all

install_hp_plugin name_of_the_correct_plugin

hpliplite-3.10.5 INSTALLATION:

Please install first the package libnetsnmp-15.pet,
http://dotpups.de/puppy4/dotpups/Printi ... nmp-15.pet
or
http://puppyfiles.ca/dotpupsde/puppy4/d ... nmp-15.pet

and afterwards install

http://dotpups.de/puppy4/dotpups/Printi ... 3.10.5.pet or
http://puppyfiles.ca/dotpupsde/puppy4/d ... 3.10.5.pet

Once hpliplite (and plugins, when required) is installed, one has to run the CUPS printer wizard,
in the Setup section of puppy's menu, to finish the printer's installation.

hpliplite-3.9.8 INSTALLATION:

For automatic installation, please use puppy package manager (in menu's setup entry).

If a manual installation is preferred, then:

Please install first the package libnetsnmp-15.pet,
http://dotpups.de/puppy4/dotpups/Printi ... nmp-15.pet
or
http://puppyfiles.ca/dotpupsde/puppy4/d ... nmp-15.pet

and then hpliplite.3.9.8.pet,
http://dotpups.de/puppy4/dotpups/Printi ... -3.9.8.pet
or
http://puppyfiles.ca/dotpupsde/puppy4/d ... -3.9.8.pet

Then restart cups:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/cups stop
/etc/init.d/cups start

Once hpliplite (and plugins, when required) is installed, one has to run the CUPS printer wizard,
in the Setup section of puppy's menu, to finish the printer's installation.

Scanning is performed using xsane (already included in puppy 4.x)

That is all to be done for hpliplite-3.9.8 version.

For some older than 3.9.8 versions, the installation opens a terminal with the licensing terms. If agreed, then installation proceeds.

NOTE For hpliplite or hplip versions up to 3.9.2 and for puppy's using new versions of cups, as cups-1.3.9 and cups-1.4b2, the attached hpliplite-postinstall-cups-v1.3.9-v1.4b2 postinstall is necesary. Please download it and, in a terminal, gunzip it, make it executable and execute it once.

Code: Select all

gunzip hpliplite-postinstall-cups-v1.3.9-v1.4b2.gz
chmod +x hpliplite-postinstall-cups-v1.3.9-v1.4b2
hpliplite-postinstall-cups-v1.3.9-v1.4b2
Then restart cups:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/cups stop
/etc/init.d/cups start

NOTE for previous 2.8.10 version: Still a post install process is necessary for this version. Download the attached
hpliplite-2.8.10-postinstall.sh.gz file, gunzip it and run it once:

Code: Select all

gunzip hpliplite-2.8.10-postinstall.sh.gz
sh hpliplite-2.8.10-postinstall.sh

Once hpliplite (and plugins, when required) is installed, one has to run the CUPS printer wizard,
in the Setup section of puppy's menu, to finish the printer's installation.

Scanning is performed using xsane (already included in puppy 4.x)

NOTES For puppy 3.01 users:

1. Cups package (ver. 1.1.23-1) is needed. See
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 773#227828

2. sane and xsane packages are not included in puppy 3.x. They sould be manually installed

*************************************************

hplip-3.9.2

hplip allows printing and scanning, in addition to full control of -most- HP printers, including printer configuration,
ink-levels information, cleaning and alignment of cartridges, color calibration,...

WARNING: Not all hplip functionalities work:

1. Faxing has been disabled, since dbus does not work in this version.

2. The hp-systray command does not work either.

3. The supplies tab in hp-toolbox is not clickable, unless you refresh all printers pushing the refresh all button (F6).
Then the supplies tab works OK.

The packages can be found at:

http://dotpups.de/puppy4/dotpups/Printi ... for_dingo/
or
http://puppyfiles.ca/dotpupsde/puppy4/d ... _for_dingo

hplip-3.9.2 INSTALLATION

This modular hplip must be installed as follows, depending on the puppy series:

For puppy-4.x (Dingo):

1. tcl-8.5.1.pet (960 kb) ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributio ... hreads.pet
and tk-8.5.1.pet (659 kb) ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributio ... hreads.pet
(or the corresponding nothreads versions, which are available as official series 3 packages).

2. Python-2.5.2.pet (7.4 Mb)
http://dotpups.de/puppy4/dotpups/Printi ... -2.5.2.pet
(Notice: Only needed if devx-xxx.sfs is not used.
Python-2.5 is already included in the devx-xxx.sfs packages,
being xxx the suited version for Dingo)

3. http://dotpups.de/puppy4/dotpups/Printi ... nmp-15.pet

4. hplip_dependencies.pet (11.7 Mb) (includes qt, sip, pyqt,...)
http://dotpups.de/puppy4/dotpups/Printi ... encies.pet

5. hplip-3.9.2.pet (11 Mb)http://dotpups.de/puppy4/dotpups/Printi ... -3.9.2.pet

The installation opens a terminal with the licensing terms. If agreed, then installation proceeds.

NOTE For puppy's using new versions of cups, as cups-1.3.9 and cups-1.4b2, the attached hpliplite-postinstall-cups-v1.3.9-v1.4b2 postinstall is necesary. Please download it and, in a terminal, gunzip it, make it executable and execute it once.

Code: Select all

gunzip hpliplite-postinstall-cups-v1.3.9-v1.4b2.gz
chmod +x hpliplite-postinstall-cups-v1.3.9-v1.4b2
hpliplite-postinstall-cups-v1.3.9-v1.4b2
Then restart cups:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/cups stop
/etc/init.d/cups start
NOTE for previous 2.8.10 version: In case xsane does not work for this version, please try opening an rxvt terminal and type:

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hpaio.so.1 /lib/libsane-hpaio.so.1
and try xsane again.

For puppy 3.x:

Forum member JB4x4 has found a way to bring hplip-2.8.7 to Puppy 3
Please follow his instructions in
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 89&t=32937
to install the present hplip-2.8.10 package in pupy 3.x
Thanks JB4x4 !

Hope that helps.
Lluis

They were accessible as official packages in puppy's version 3. You can use instead
the nothreads packages: tcl-8.5a4nothreads and tk-8.5a4nothreads, which you'll find using the PETget package manager,
activating the official puppy 2 pet package repository.
In case you have further troubles, please let me know

Thanks for your reply, lluamco, both installed.

I'm feeling a complete dumbo because now I cannot find Python-2.5.2.pet. I've looked in all three repositories in the Puppy Package Manager, but cannot see it. I've found a 2.4 version of Python on dotpups.de - will that do?

Thanks for your help with the Python pets, Dingo and Lluis, and thanks Lluis for all the new HPLIP pets. All installed and running now; I went for the 2.8.5 version. One small point: when I open the HP Toolbox, the 'Supplies' button isn't active. I had HPLIP on Puppy 3.01 and the 'Supplies' button was OK - I it used to check cartridge levels. Any way to activate it?

Thanks again

John

Hi John. Same problem here. It activates though when refreshing all printers (second left most tab or F6).

Updated to hplip-2.8.6b
See first post

The hplip-2.8.6 package is replaced by this hplip-2.8.6b.

Please notice, from http://hplip.sourceforge.net/release_notes.html
HPLIP 2.8.6 prematurely released code that was not intended for release. Release 2.8.6b replaces 2.8.6 and removes that code. There is no change in intended functionality as described in the release notes. We do not recommend using release 2.8.6 and ask that release 2.8.6 not be redistributed.

What would probably be useful is an "hplip-lite" package (google it).
This would apparently only be about 2MB as it would just include what you NEED for printing and scanning, and it would not require all the rubbish like Python :)

I imagine the easiest way to build it would be to use the standard procedure to build an hpliplite deb or rpm, and then convert it to .pet
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Thanks disciple. I have packaged the hpliplite version 2.8.9. It is only 3.1 MB
and allows printing and scanning.
The packages can be found in the first post of this threat.

Nice - works well. It will feel much better to point people to that than to the full hplip and all its dependencies :)

I still can't figure out what hplip is supposed to add in terms of printing support though

Hi:
I have an HP Photosmart C5280, that is supported with Hplip. If I install the full hplip (the "bloated" one), I can scan; but if I install hplip-lite (in another puppy installation), I can't scan. Do you know if some manual configuration is needed, or if my All-In-One is not supported by hplip-lite?

Thanks in advance

Edit: I've solved it adding "hpaio" in the file /etc/sane.d/dll.conf. Thanks for the hpliplite, it is a lot better than the bloated one!

Thanks sintot.
I agree that hpliplite is better: almost same functionality
and much less resources. I have a question for you. How did you install hpliplite?
Adding hpaio in the file /etc/sane.d/dll.conf should be automatically done by petget.
It is strange that it was not in your case.
(Or did you untarred the package and manually copied the files?)
Cheers

I think the problem was that I installed xsane (and sane-backend) after installing hpliplite
