I've tried 4.0, 4.1rc, 4.1retrorc, 3.01, 3.01retro and can't get my Xircom Ethernet rem56g-100 card to work.
The only one where it was recognized was on puppy 3.01, cardmgr displaying a message during boot that it's a Xircom, but then it says "Module xirc2ps_cs not found."
The card works in DSL Linux absolutely fine, which has Kernel 2.4, I think. Apparently the latest kernels need to load "PCMCIA" to support these old 16-bit cards, but there is no PCMCIA module in Puppy
Xircom Ethernet card isn't working

For a pcmcia to work, the support shouls be loaded and you can do this by issuing in a rxvt terminal the command: modprobe yenta_socket
Once done (reboot may be necessary) you can try with the network wizard again. The xircom module xirc2ps_cs is in there.
You can verify this by pushing load module and scrolling to xir....
