Bugs

#3 Post by NathanO »

On Barry's blog there is an item about the b43 / bcm32xx problem. I am having it on my HP Pavilion zv6000. How does one go about making the change to use the bcm43xx when using the live CD? Even if I 'unload' the b43 and try and load the bcm43xx it will not see the wireless.

Gzine still has the on going problem when changing vizulazations.

Do we have a list of known good, tested .pet packages and .sfs files for 4.1? If not, can we have a place here on the forum or the wiki for such a list? Would help in reducing the frustration level.

linuxcbon,
The firmwares will install into /lib/firmware when the 'dvb-usb' module loads the first time.

Loading of sfs files, 3 selected 2 loaded.

#8 Post by Béèm »

Barry mentioned on his blog he found the error and said, fixed.
I just installed 410 (frugal HDD) but I still have the same isue.
Selected FileZilla, OOo and Wine.
Only FileZilla ans OOo are loaded (looks like the load order is alphabetic)

I still have something mounted on _ro2 (looks like a pristine pup_xxx.sfs)

Success story on full HDD update.

#9 Post by Béèm »

I have, as a test in qemu, a full HDD install of 407
In some 5 minutes I did the upgrade to 410.
A piece of cake.
(didn't know if it was needed, but did the update of grub as well)
Posting right now with it.

Not saving network config

#10 Post by ottod »

My card loads iwl3945. On previous puppies I think it was ipw3945. With iwl, it is hard to lock on a signal, it requires many tries, but it works at last (posting this with 4.1 after a little work to lock signal). I tell the network wizard to save the configuration for next boot but at next boot everything needs to be reconfigured again. First time this happens with Puppy on this computer. I will now try retro.

icons on the desktop misplaced

#11 Post by Béèm »

This is the first time it happened to me since the introduction of the event manager. I saw posts of other people complaining about this.
The srO icon places itself over the sda1 one.
The paint icon was half over the draw one.

Don't remember, but will have to chase the forum to see what cure there was for this (if any)

I am only a novice at this and basically an end user, but have been waiting for 4.1 as I've had problems with my USB wireless network in previous versions (3 and 4). I posted the problem and was advised that it may be resolved with the new kernel (I'll update that post in a minute)

I have a Dell Latitude Cpt, 500mhz with 256mb of ram. The USB wireless is from Zydas and has a zd1211 chipset.

I had tried 4.07 and got an improvement, but had to use ndiswrapper to load the zd1211b driver and even then connection was hit and miss. It really seemed to have problems with the WPA encryption and I had to reconnect everytime I booted up.

Anyway, I have loaded up 4.1, used the zd1211rw driver suggested in the Network Wizard, found the network, put in my WPA key and hey presto, connected straight away. One Happy Puppy!!! :D

I have some info about wifi in Puppy. I have a Dell optiplex gx260 with a Netgear wpn 311 (atheros) card.
Wifi was the most stable in 2.17.1 but ok in 3.01 and also 4.0, both with my broadcom and netgear cards. However now in 4.1 something is wrong. And I know what it is :-) After boot my wlan lists the driver as ath_pci so wifi should work, but alas, no network. So here is what to do: Using ndiswrapper to unload the driver I find that the loaded driver is NOT ath_pci but ath5k. With that disabled I go back to load module ath_pci and "presto" wifi works.

Freememapplet icon disappeared in system tray

This started in 409 and is still an issue in 410.
Is here some jwm file that can be edited to get it right again (yes a reboot fixes the problem)

I sill have "pup_410.sfs not found. Dropping out..." problem.

I am booting from NTFS drive using GRUB for NTLDR technique.

Code: Select all

rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/puppy.410/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=satahd
psubdir=/boot/puppy.410
initrd (hd0,0)/boot/puppy.410/initrd.gz
boot
From that limited console I can successfully mount NTFS drive and locate pup_410.sfs file. So there are no problems with NTFS drive. Looks like puppy is not mounting it at all. Otherwise it could see that file.

* Additional parameters layerfs=aufs or/and acpi=noirq is not solving the problem.
* 2.4, 3.x puppy versions was and is working.
* 4.1 is successfully booting and working from burned CD.

SOLVED!

Hi, I guess one of my pet-peeves from 4.0 ended up in 4.10
The default puppy software manager should be petget, so You can rerun the dependency check, So many times I put together an application and have to check the libs a few times, So I manually have to change the icon on the desktop, from pupget to petget., Then it lets me check the libs again.
could we have a dependency check button on the newer puppy package manager? now that would be nice

Also the "mount" is nice with tabs, but who uses a floppy? shouldn't the main default be hard drive/cd/floppy tab.
That means everytime I want to view my hard drive partition, I have to click a tab first, hmmmmmm new extra step.

who uses a floppy
Too many presumptions on this and most other fora from folks with go-faster stripes. In the real world, it aint like that; many users struggle along without any burner- some without a USB port.
Apart from which, yesterday, I think I only used the FDD apart from the spinning reserve on HD.

Update for SiS chipset no-poweroff feature. 4.1std also introduces the same new innovation of rebooting as retro. There are guys who must know the origin of this fault since early version shutdown properly as well as 4.1alpha6(?)-conservative. Allegedly, several laptops also exhibit the problem.

Hey Sage

most users of puppy use usb flash, hard drive, cd and lastly floppy(wake Pup mostly, but not for actual storage)
but anyways I'll just install the old pmount from 4.0
just kind of a pain the new way for a person who only runs live and doesn't save any settings.

Begging to differ, my illustrious friend. Maybe correct in Ontario & Sydney but the masses of the great unwashed are using HW that wouldn't disgrace Mr Noah. You'd be amazed what passes for a PC in the great wide world.

MUT doesn't work and when I tried to use MUT from 4.0 that didn't work also, So no-more MUT.
I always liked it for a backup. "Old Faithful". P mount from 4.0 works fine on 4.1 :)
