is it 4.12?

#2 Post by raffy »

Perhaps it is 4.12? Barry has mentioned his intention to create 4.2 many times already. If 4.10 gets updated for last-minute problems, then 4.11 will be released.

Just my 0.02c. :)

This is the meeting.
Let us move to point one

1. Goals for 4.2

Raffy says:
Barry has mentioned his intention to create 4.2 many times already.
?
Is that the case?
My impression is that it will be a community effort.
What does that mean? What form will it take?

IMHO a full version could only realistically be produced by Barry himself, or his appointed successor. No-one else has the full skill-set to be able produce a full version with all the under-the-hood programming and strucural understanding of the Puppy system that would be necessary. No such successor has been either approved or appointed by Barry. An appropriate successor who is willing or able to undertake the task may well not even exist.

Under these circumstances, the next Puppy version can/should only be called 4.1CE. (unless Barry himself (or his successor)) decides to make a 4.2 version. Could use "Deep Thought" as the project name though.

Puppy CEs increment a number, which would make it 4.2 or 4.3, depending on whether Barry makes 4.2 :)

Is it time to start seriously testing Seamonkey 2 even though it is in alpha (5 days ago)?
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Hey guys

people have been e-mailing me to take over, 3 series, I do have a unused account at http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... s/ttuuxxx/
I would say that I would put the hard effort into it,
I would like to see it released as a official "puppy Linux" 3 series.
Plus I would like some restraints remove, Well we know that slackware takes about an extra 20MB plus if I include Amigos addon to make it even better compatible That boost it up another 5mb, I need some room to work, I was thinking a max of 120MB.

Well you can shoot me down if you want, But look at i liket this is, I would be out of the series 4&5.

I would hope that bigbass and few other hard-liners of Slackware would join in also.

The next version of Puppy is 4.2.
The last few versions have increasingly been community editions, something Barry acknowledges.
The code name for 4.2 is 'Deep Thought' which is already in place
with graphics created by Puppy Community artists, hosted on the community site . . .

kernel tweaks

#10 Post by raffy »

With version 4.1 and Barry's announcement of semi-retirement (plus other influences), we are approaching kernel tweaking capability among Puppy developers. This will allow different developers to adapt a "core" Puppy to specific machines.

4.2 will see this new level of development being used.

To illustrate, if Barry crafts a version 4.2 for the baby laptops, then the community can use the new core and tweak it for optimal use in other machines. This could be the pattern:

Senior developer does pioneering work -> Community crafts an updated puppy core -> Developers tweak the kernel for target machine/s -> Puplet makers combine the core with chosen features and applications for their target users

The community will, in effect, pick up the pieces from pioneering work by various individuals (Barry, MU, and others) and fashion an updated "core" usable by kernel-tweakers and then by puplet-makers for their target users.

In ttuuxxx's post above, he is essentially describing this process, but for the 3.x series.

Good luck with the 3 series Ttuuxx
Dingo have sent you a pm about the graphic . . .

Does this mean 4.11 (4.1 with patches) or Unipup can be the base of 4.2?
Is Barry putting 4.2 together on the basis of any priorities we as a community manage to agree on?
Raffy are you willing to put a future Puppy together?

moving ahead

#12 Post by raffy »

Barry is already forging ahead with UniPup, so I guess the 4 series is moving forward very well.

Ttuuxxx has committed to coordinating the 3 series (possibly together with Tronkel, who is still working on 3.02.)

Big_Bass, Amigo and others have something up their sleeves - expect something new for the 2 series very soon. (Don't forget MU who is flexing his kernel compiling muscles for SMP. :) )

While the pioneers are enjoying themselves with the innovations, I guess I can help by organizing the information somewhere, like a "development news" page: either at (1) puppylinux.org or at (2) sourceforge.net. (I will see what I can do this week.)

At the moment, using sourceforge.net as development repository should receive high priority. Our two youthful developers, Pizzasgood and cb88, are on top of it, and other developers could help by following the discussion: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=238926#238926

:D Ttuuxxx,
Good, Im glad to see the 3 series revived. IMO the best Puppy yet, for Pup makers..If I miss the thread somehow, plz send me a link, as I want to help if I can..even if just testing...
In Barrys blog he has stated that 4.02 will be his last release, so I think the "number is taken"...

I don't know much about Unipup
An Alpha was released. It is geared towards specific hardware.
Any more info?
Ttuuxxx has committed to coordinating the 3 series (possibly together with Tronkel, who is still working on 3.02.)
Good news. I have been hoping for 3.02 for over a year.
Look forward to any results

If the 2.xx series incorporates some of the 4.xx updates, then it might be possible for 4.2 to be 2.xx based?
4.3 to be 3.xx based?
I used Muppy for over a week (a long time in cructacean time).
I was able to make it look like Puppy (an enhanced version)
and use it successfully. So Mark is another potential for 4.2 assembly?
While the pioneers are enjoying themselves with the innovations, I guess I can help by organizing the information somewhere, like a "development news" page: either at (1) puppylinux.org or at (2) sourceforge.net. (I will see what I can do this week.)
I would recommend this page for development rather than yet another . . .
http://www.puppylinux.org/home/latest-news
or for more technical matters using Barrys blog - maybe he would share with trusted developers?

This is the time we really have to succeed with a repository and I agree that their efforts are very encouraging.
Do you feel it is a possible way for a a non programmer with good organisational skills to obtain code (whatever the source, forum, pet, sfs) and make it available on the repository?

Well lobster I did go into detail before on one of the other threads.
Basically we need some sort of guide lines, I have found anytime I compare i386 vs i486 that i386 runs faster and takes less resources, some say different thats it isn't possible to compile a real i386 anymore on latest hardware and kernels. But anyways there has to be a guide make up with strict rules, Then It should be tested on clean puppy live cd to see if any missing libs etc.
maybe a testing stage like
stage 3 - someone builds & submits a package and is uploaded to a designated ftp site, series 1, series 2, series3, series 4, so 4 ftp sites total in stage 3
then a trusted puppy community member (TPCM) lol takes it and tries it live. and makes sure it doesn't have any missing parts and places it into stage 2 which would have predefined categories like games, Office, Internet, Multimedia etc
stage 2 testing for stability and errors could take anywhere from 1-6 weeks. maybe with release notes, a simple text file.
then another TPCM takes it from stage 2 and places it in the Official Puppy Repository as a release <-- stage 1
On the murga forum maybe a new category called "Puppy Testing Grounds" under Advanced Topics with 4 sub categories Puppy 1,2,3,4
Thats where testing for stage 2 happens, let the community have a testing rights.
it would be good if we stop the community from making new threads in that Catergory, just responses, that way each listing would be a specif pre-release only and a lot less pages to sort out. Maybe even delete the thread after the package is moved to stage 1. To keep it to a minimum.
hows that sound?

ttuuxxx has my support for the new testing categories by series, in the forum [including no new thread policy] - good idea, overdue

sounds like a pizzasgood/Flash job?

Lobster, I'll input what I can, but am following tombh's thread primarily - no offence, different focus

I also like the idea of 4.2 being 2 series based, & 4.3 being 3 series based, though don't know enough about the inner workings/improvements to know how it could be implemented or why to do it/what advantages would be
- speed/stability/hardware compatibility/software updates, etc????

If some kind soul could give a run-through, in not too technical jargon.....?

can I ask for a wish list [also by series] to be put on the agenda

Aitch :)

More division of people, resources, HW and effort. Guess this means someone should start separate "4.3 Meeting - Here" thread, wiki page, SVN, etc. ...

AJ
More division of people, resources, HW and effort
Yes, I gave that some thought, it's just that ever since I came to puppy over a year ago, during which time lots has happened, documentation has improved, new people/skills have emerged and 'allegiant teams' have moved certain projects forward,...
I started with 2.14 & still use both it & 2.14R because for me, v3 never worked properly, nor got 'developed', before v4 was issued, as if it was a wrong direction using slack, fundamentally changing the core of puppy
Now v4 /1/2 & v5 all being talked about
- so maybe more directed teamwork wouldn't be a bad thing
ttuuxxx, big_bass & a few others seem keen to do v3, and Lobster seems to be leading the charge on v4.2 so what's wrong with that?
maybe someone will do a new CE version?

However, even if, as ttuuxxx has suggested separate development threads are created for testing/co-ordinating to work, I don't see that we should not be able to gell together in one overall thread, as each team leader could update latest development

I can't remember who did 2.14R, but I gather there is plan to update it/2series to v4 but no idea who might be involved

Lobster, any clues?
Guess this means someone should start separate "4.3 Meeting - Here" thread
Isn't that happening, or is that another of your humorous posts?

Aitch :) [sorry if that's not on the agenda, - I never got one sent to me!]
