Macpup - has to end?

#1 Post by prit1 »

Do the below posts mean that Macpup, Wbar, Awn (Avant Window Navigator), Cairo Dock etc need to end?

Hi Prit,

I hope Macpup doesn't need to end as it's very popular and a beautiful puplet.

This is a topic that needs to be addressed in Puppy.

Tom's co-op may be the way to handle proprietary or perceived proprietary issues with regards to what is allowed in a puplet or an official release in the future.

Sadly, one of these days a lawyer may come a knocking on our door..grrr..and grr again.

EDIT: There have been a few discussions as to what will be allowed on puppylinux.ca. Sadly, I am aware of needed changes coming....and this will not go well with the original concept for .ca...but if closed software is being hosted on .ca then we will need to address this and end it soon to protect the entire project and allow growth in an open source compliant way...sheesh, it can get complicated.

Best,
Eric

All the components being used in Macpup are GPL licensed. Will Apple now start hunting for the creators of these individual components or for folks like us who do Macpup that assembles these individual components into a single puplet?

they requested the patent in 1999, it just was confirmed now.

I think, there is not much to fear, as Apple was not very agressive concerning all the theming stuff in the last years.

We also have to see, if a company will take juristic steps against the patent.
The concept of "Docks" is much older than 1999, and was used e.g. by the windowmanager "Afterstep".
It was simpler, but included some aspects, like starting applications by clicking on icons, arranged in a bar.

Macpup might be a bit problematic, if it would be sold as a alternative to MacOSX.

In Muppy, I include some elements, that resemble other operating systems.
E.g. icewm themes that look like Windows Vista, or also one, that resembles somewhat MacOSX.

As we are a company, we must take care, though.
So in Muppy, I would not use "exact" copies of the commercial desktops as default.
It already is "hard at the border", that I use a theme with Vista like buttons as default.
But we see, that other, more popular companies like Asus had no trouble yet in this regard.
E.g. the Eeepc uses a Theme, that looks like Windows XP Silver.

For Macpup I would suggest, to use a logo, that is not a exact copy of the Apple (e.g. as desktop background).
I don't know, how Macpup looks like by default, but from Screenshots I remember, that it does not look like an exact clone.
You just try to give some "Mac feel".

So I think, that should be accepeted, especially, as it is just a private project.
If it would be problematic, then more popular projects like kde-look.org certainly already would be in trouble, as there you can get themes for KDE, that include alot of material from MacOSX (Backgrounds, complete iconsets).

Some resemblances are the logo in the menu bar for Macpup Dingo and the logo on the wallpaper in Macpup Foxy.

I do really want to get rid of these and make it little more original. Sometime in the near future.

Yeah. I will just watch out for the big guys like kde-look.org who have clone themes.

Any chance for a Power PC Mac Pup Live CD/DVD?

#9 Post by ChiJoan »

Hi Everyone,

As you know Mac Power PC computers are being dumped by Apple soon. I got my Power G4 AGP Mac tower at a college surplus sale for $15.00 without an OS. So I can't help but wish someone wanted to think about a Mac Pup or Muppy Live version for hardware testing at least. If it weren't for that Ubuntu Live CD working, I wouldn't know if it was worth the money I will eventually have to pay for Tiger OS X. Why? Adobe doesn't support ActiveX on the Linux Power PC platform.

Just as a side note, Debian PPC, Fedora PPC, and YellowDog didn't boot up after install. However, OpenSuse 11.0 is happy with a 450 MHz CPU, of course for a safe bit I boosted the RAM to 1 gig first.

I know it's probably a bad time, but you never know who might want to take on a new platform eventually. I just wanted to let you know I'd be a willing tester for the iso file. I'm sure a Puppy Power PC would be faster than this OpenSuse is on the same machine.

Thanks for reading,
ChiJoan in Reno
