Globetrotter HSDPA USB modem not working

#1 Post by kattami »

Ok, I have a Globetrotter HSDPA Modem and it doesnt work.

I used first the info from this site:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=262867&page=2

Tried the how-to on that site and got error:

# rmmod usb-storage
# modprobe usbserial vendor=05c6 product=0x1000

It came with # again and then I tried

# ls -la /dev/ttyU*
ls: cannot access /dev/ttyU*: No such file or directory

So I guess this one doesnt work to set up the globetrotter HSDPA modem.

Then I found this site:

http://www.net42.co.uk/os/linux/d620_3g_datacard.html

So I typed this command in terminal window

# cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

Got this text for the modem:

T: Bus=02 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 6 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=05c6 ProdID=1000 Rev= 0.00
S: Manufacturer=Option N.V.
S: Product=Globetrotter HSDPA Modem
S: SerialNumber=Serial Number
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr=100mA
I:* If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=(none)
E: Ad=84(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=05(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms

The text at I: was before something about usb-storage and now it changed so I guess I changed something with the first commands from the site about Huawei setup.

But I tried the next command anyway to see what it said and got this:

# sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=05c6 product=0x1000
bash: sudo: command not found

I am not sure what to do from here on. From what I understand it says there is no driver, or?

drop the sudo.
Puppy runs as root.

http://www.archlinux.org/packages/search/?q=ipw3945
also http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/ is the correct driver look for the debian package Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG and open the deb file and try the drivers.

if you don't have undeb here's a link http://www.dotpups.de/dotpups/System_Ut ... .undeb.pup
install it, go to a command prompt and type undeb packagename.extension like the package name is drivers.deb you type undeb drivers.deb or if its a rpm type unrpm drivers.rpm

you need to try these drivers because they are made for the make and model of your pc. They will work without question. But getting them to work is the question, lol just try eachone I posted, and follow the steps. You could alway just use ndiswrapper with the orginal xp drivers
http://support.fujitsu-siemens.com/com/ ... uctID=3442
ttuuxxx

Ps to get your burn running I need your make and model of the burner
also I read somewhere arch linux works with your pc and you can get it here http://www.archlinux.org/download/
once installed then install this driver http://www.archlinux.org/packages/search/?q=ipw3945 and your good to go.

I will try this tomorrow when Im up again, ttuuxxx. Thanks alot for the help.

Where do I find the info on make and model of the cd/dvd burner? It sounds like a stupid question but Vista is a pain in the butt, cause it doesnt want to show me the different devices and I have gone tired of Vista since that time I struggled to figure out how to get it to show network and definitely dont want to learn more about how to use it. They said its so secure. Of course, when the users cant get access to anything!

Archlinux - hmm....it doesnt have a liveCD? My favorite is Puppylinux of course.....

wingruntled, I had to laugh when I saw your post. Just shows how little I know.

no problem, By the way it isn't Linux fault or puppy's fault , really your drivers are specialty drivers and if nobody on puppy ever before you had that particular make/model we would of never needed to find drivers for it, Plus fujitsu is a crap company just making drivers for windows only and none for Linux. You should email them and tell them how you feel. Its usually the manufactures job to make the drivers for computes, luckily Linux in general have big hearts and thats the reason you now have a driver. People more than likely didn't make 1 dime making off those drivers. Thats why I respect Linux. LOL man I go on about nothing sometimes LOLLOL

Yeah, but what dissappointed me really was the article with that guy who quit making the patches for linux kernel because he got fed up of the problems with Linux for end users.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=26741

I read the whole article and I had no idea it was that problematic with a desktop for Linux. That it was really supposed to be a server side OS.

And then I looked at that Minix thing Prehistoric mentioned and could not understand why that idea hadnt been built on. Too bad I got sick when I started on the computer science so many years ago. Had to quit after 3 months...so I guess Destiny didnt want me to get into this....

Download & install a hardware diagnostic program, like hardinfo or lshw. Both of these are available via forum search. For these to correctly identify manufacturer info, you also need to download these two files, and save them to /usr/share:

http://pciids.sourceforge.net/pci.ids
http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids

Once you get that info it will be a lot easier to figure out your hardware issues with your dvd burner.

kattami,
you have not explained clearly whether your Globetrotter modem is a USB device, or cardbus device. I can be more helpful once I know this.

Even if your device is cardbus, the usbserial driver may still be correct, but I suspect that the vendor/product numbers you tried (05c6:1000) are wrong, which would cause the driver to fail to load properly.

If your modem is a cardbus device, please run these 2 commands to identify the correct vendor/product numbers:

Code: Select all

cardctl status
cardctl ident
The appropriate device node is likely to be /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 ... but one step at a time, please report your findings first.

ttuuxxx, the ipw3945 driver is for Intel wireless network adaptors. This driver will not have any relation to a Globetrotter HSDPA modem.

Originally he said
As for the mobile internet modem, I havent found anything of info anywhere about this on Puppylinux. Not here, not in google. I suspect that it may be its similar problem as with the huawei modem. That it finds the modem but calls it usb storage medium or something like that. After the unsuccessful request of mine for help on the problem with cd/dvd burner, I dont know if I bother asking for help with the modem.

Then I looked up his computers manufacture, and found out which wifi drivers they were using and it was Intel wireless and all I did was found the corresponding Linux match for it.
Here's his Pc manufactures drivers download page matching his pc.
http://support.fujitsu-siemens.com/com/ ... uctID=3442
ttuuxxx
Intel® PRO/Wireless LAN 3945ABG

But when it comes to these sort of fixes, tempestuous your better at it, So I'll set back and learn:)

If it had been so easy, ttuuxxx, then I had been back at university already some years ago.

However, fibromyalgia gives many weird things, in addition to muscle pains 24/7, things like brainfog, scattered brain most of time, black shadows in front of my eyes for weeks if I stress with alot of reading/studying (that was what happened when I was at computer science in 2000, and my doctor got scared and said its time for me to get disability). If I start now at university, then it will probably take 20 years to take all that math and stuff there that is subjects you have to take in computer science.

Sorry for lack of information. The modem is a usb device, where I put in a sim card and then plug in to an usb port. I got it because the broadband where I am is terrible, it dies off several times in a day, and there was a campaign price for this usb modem device where I pay just a small price monthly for free modem and free use from 5 pm to 7 am and weekends. Plus I realised that it may be I can get sim cards in other countries and use them with this device.

I tried your code and got this:

# cardctl status
open_sock(): No such device
# cardctl ident
open_sock(): No such device
#

Oh, and I am a She. Lol

Edit: just a little extra info: I am on the countryside and there is only one broadband option with radiowave antennae internet here. So not possible to change to another broadband. Hence this mobile internet usb device was the best choice to have something in backhand if the broadband dies off.

OK, then your modem will be similar to the Huawei E220, and you should be able to use the HOWTO by forum member wescht -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=12603

And since your modem is a true USB device (not a device which emulates USB interfaces) then the vendor/product numbers reported by "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices" should be correct.
kattami wrote:# rmmod usb-storage

It came with # again ...
Good, so it looks like the usbserial driver loaded successfully. It sounds like you're 90% there. Just follow the instructions by wescht.
Notice that wescht accesses the modem at /dev/usb/ttyUSB0.

I went to the thread by wescht yesterday night and did it up to:

Code: Select all

# wvdial huewai_e220
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.41
--> Cannot open /dev/usb/ttyUSB0: No such device or address
Unfortunately I didnt copy what it said in messages in /var/log, but I remember that there was not those messages that said something about connecting/disconnecting modem.

Then I turned off the computer for the night and went to sleep. I was thinking that the reboot would fix this. Got the computer on today and found to my annoyance that the batmon had been messed up, also the choice of theme and background. So I removed batmon after googling about this issue and got that torsmo thing and made it run in its own window to solve that blinking issue, and changed the other things to my preferance.

Now when I use the same code as above in terminal I get the same output, and in the var/log/messages it says nothing.

I am right now in the wvdial.conf file and put in phonenumber and also PIN code in dialer default and dialer pin to see if that made any change but it didnt. Same output as above, also with the "# wvdial pin huewai_e220". And nothing in the var/log/messages.

Going to reboot and hope it doesnt mess up something again.

*********

Did reboot and unfortunately its same output as above. So I am stuck. Only thing I can try right now is that website with the ppp thing. And get the hardware recognition installed.

Yes, wescht reported this same problem, but in his 4th post he solved it by having the modem plugged in while booting up ... which is contrary to the process he explained in his 1st post.
wescht also reports in his 4th post the importance of creating the file /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial
kattami wrote:I am right now in the wvdial.conf file and put in phonenumber and also PIN code in dialer default and dialer pin ...
Just checking; the pin code should go under the "[Dialer pin]" section, to replace the default pin code "1234".
If this continues to be an issue, you could consider deactivating the pin under Windows, as wescht suggested.

But the thing is that I did boot up with the usb device plugged in the next morning, and got the same message.

I will look in Vista (ugh) if that program that comes up has any disable pin function. Didnt see that when I tried with XP on another laptop my father uses.

I could not figure out how to do this with the modem dialup programs.

You know, I had the feeling that the Vista would be a big problem, and heck, I got right, again!

I went to Vista to get up that program and get the modem to work there and then disable the pin (saw that the program did have the disable pin function, very cool).

But Vista didnt show the usb modem as it should do. Its showing it as a DVD drive????

So the program cant find the usb modem it in Vista. And Puppylinux, as good as it is, did find the same DVD drive Vista is telling me the usb modem is.

Thats just too funny, lol.

A small update:

I removed Vista to try to install XP, but XP is saying it cant find any harddisk on this computer.

I lost motivation to keep on messing with this for the time being, but I at least found out something when doing over again what wescht did.

At the code

Code: Select all

modprobe usbserial vendor=05c6 product=0x1000
the log says:

Code: Select all

Mar 18 04:29:26 (none) kern.info kernel: usbcore: deregistering interface driver usb-storage
Mar 18 04:30:04 (none) kern.info kernel: usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
Mar 18 04:30:05 (none) kern.info kernel: usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Mar 18 04:45:01 (none) kern.info kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial
Mar 18 04:45:01 (none) kern.info kernel: drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c: USB Serial support registered for generic
Mar 18 04:45:01 (none) kern.info kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
Mar 18 04:45:01 (none) kern.info kernel: drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c: USB Serial Driver core
So it is obviously not doing anything with the ttyUSB0. Thats why its not finding the ttyUSB0 when I do the next step, using the wvdial.

I went to the site that has with this device to do and they recommend this site when its about getting the Option HSDPA Usb modems to work in Linux.

From what I can see I have either GT MAX 3.6 (7.2 Ready) or GlobeTrotter Express 7.2. I am not sure which of them I have because when it was working on the other laptop in winXP, it says speed 7.2 Mbps in the program for the mobile internet.

Anyway, they obviously use USB_modeswitch to get many of those devices to work.

GT Max 3.6 forum

and

http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/

Tried to search here if there is any USB_modeswitch compiled for puppylinux but havent found anything so far.

Just a small update

#20 Post by kattami »

Hi again.

I gave up trying to figure out this after several tries where I couldnt get the compiling to work in the puppylinux (puppylinux frugal installation plus devx sfs file and also full installation on the laptop). Didnt go further than that.

Now I am somewhere where I have only the cellphone modem to get online with (only with windows) and will not have a chance to get any other ways of internet access for some weeks. So no possibility to get puppylinux online in meantime.

But anyway I found that the cellphone modem I have is a GlobeSurfer Icon 7.2 and that the driver for it has no .inf file so I cant use Ndiswrapper either to get this to work. It has only one .sys file and Ndiswrapper didnt take it.

Steps for the Globesurfer Icon 7.2. is here

Note: the icon_switch.c is updated with usb_modeswitch where they have the information how to get this to work on different linux versions.

"download icon_switch.c http://www.frederick-reid.com/files/icon_switch.c
change the product id in the file from 6600 to 6901
Compile (note that you need to have libusb installed):

Code: Select all

cc -l usb -o icon_switch icon_switch.c
Move the file to /usr/sbin/

Edit /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules (add it if it doesn't exists) and add the following two rules:

Code: Select all

BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="1000", SYSFS{idVendor}=="05c6", RUN+="/usr/sbin/icon_switch"
BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="6901", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0af0", RUN+="/sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x0af0 produc
t=0x6901"
The simplest way is to reboot your computer (or reload the rules into udev and restart it). Do not have the iCON plugged in while booting,

When you computer is up and running again, plugg the iCON in.
Now list you USB devices:

Code: Select all

# lsusb
Within 30 seconds you should have a device presenting it self as "Option"
Code:

Bus xxx Device xxx: ID 0af0:6901 Option

Now you should have three new nodes in /dev/

Code: Select all

 ls /dev/ttyUSB*
/dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/ttyUSB2
Now your iCON should be working. I use kppp to connect. the only important things in kppp is the following:
The modem pointing at /dev/ttyUSB0 (could perhaps be 1 or 2 as well don't know the difference)
I use RTS/CTS as flowcontrol.
Deselect "wait for dial tone"
Add the connection, dial *99# and use PAP as authentication
Username and password should not matter."

************

So I am per today stuck at being not able to compile the icon_switch.c and therefore cant try this setup.

I dont have motivation or energy to start again with different installation of puppylinux to try to figure out how to get compiling to work after failing so many times last time.

So I post this just in case someone is looking for information how to get Globesurfer Icon 7.2 to work with puppylinux. First step would be to compile the icon_switch.c, or even better, usb_modeswitch.

Thanks
