Driver for HP Laserjet 6L? |
|
hello; pup 411, frugal hd install.
anyone have a driver for HP Laserjet 6L? Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.2.10 ain't cuttin' it for me, it always prints a string of nonsense characters at the top a file (first page). there are several other drivers in the list, but none are specifically for 6L.
Such a thing existed in 3.01, but i don't remember the name of the driver- might have been gutenprint.
thanks,
-steve

Puppy 4.11 comes with a driver for the Laserjet 6L. Did you try it? You will see it when you run the CUPS wizard.

i know about the cups wizard; that's how i discovered there's no driver for 6L on my system. the only one on the list with a 6 in it doesn't work- when printing a test page, i only get ") HP-PCL XL; 1; 1; Comment Copyright Aladdin Enterprises 1996" then a string of nonsense, then it feeds and feeds until the tray is empty.

I just set up an HP compatible Brother laser printer using the Laserjet 6L driver from the CUPS list and it worked fine.
The Laserjet 6L uses HP's PCL5e printer language. The PCL6 driver is for newer generation printers. That would explain your problem. It sounds like you are confusing the "6" in the printer model with the "6" in the PCL version.
Which version of 4.11 are you using - the standard or the retro?

i've installed gutenprint, and am trying to use that 6L driver, which worked on 3.01.
now i get this message:"Unable to open file "/var/spool/cups/d00003-001" - Permission denied"
thanks!

You don't need to install anything else. For some reason, if you run the CUPS wizard from the Setup menu, you get a much larger selection of printers than if you go directly to the CUPS admin screen. You will find the 6L printer on that expanded list. Otherwise, try the generic Laserjet Series driver from the list you showed above.
To determine your Puppy kernel version, type the command: uname -a

i've posted a screenshot of the available drivers for HP above. they all produce the same result- one line of nonsense, then the printer feeds through a whole stack of paper. the only solution to this is to unplug the printer for a couple of minutes.
any ideas?

i've made a bit of progress on this now; i've re-installed the HP LaserJet 6 Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.2.10 driver and can now print, but there's always a string of nonsense, wingding-type characters at the top of page one. i'll start another thread from there; thanks for the suggestions!
