Xournal-0.4.2.1: A journal/sketching application

#1 Post by muggins »

http://xournal.sourceforge.net/
Xournal is an application for notetaking, sketching, keeping a journal using a stylus. It is free software (GNU GPL) and runs on Linux (recent distributions) and other GTK+/Gnome platforms. It is similar to Microsoft Windows Journal or to other alternatives such as Jarnal, Gournal, and NoteLab.

I like the size but when you insert text. it doesn't follow the lines, which is strange then the only format offered to save as is Xournal format, which should have other options like Open office or Abiword formats to save to or atleast rtf format.
If those features would be change I would say make it default for puppy

Cute application...my better half likes it and she does have a tablet so features like pressure sensitivity give a very realistic feel.
I tried exporting to pdf and the result was of good quality which at least gives one commonly used format.

By the way tested in puppy 2.02 and 2.12.

cheers

Pelo

The main interest of Xournal is annotation of pdf

#7 Post by Pelo »

Xournal is a software making handwritten notes, especially for taking notes on PDF documents and annotate them. It offers a quick start and can export to PDF or. Xoj (the latter mode allows rework layers).

The main functions:
Pen (Allows you to write and draw with the mouse).
Highlighter (Lets highlight text, can choose the thickness and color highlighting).
The text mode (allows adding text in addition to the existing + choice of fonts)
Shape detection (Allows you to draw a geometric shape by hand, then it will be corrected by the software).
Selecting and moving annotations.

It is compatible with graphic tablets Wacom and also manages the pen pressure.

This software is a very good free alternative to taking software Microsoft OneNote note.
It allows taking notes on PDF.

version 0.4.5 here.

I had trouble with xournal on my Slacko 5.6 derivative until I tried a pet from rcrsn51 here

I use it at school! It's super easy. It also annotates PDFs so you can fill out forms and stuff and print them out. It's simple and fast. Love it!

Xournal is Not just for Graphics Tablets

#10 Post by mikeslr »

xournal was brought to my attention by rcrsn51's post here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 54#1012554. It appeared to be a useful application so I wondered if 64 bit and other 32-bit versions were available and would function under Puppies. Xenialpup64's PPM showed one, a single 261K deb, which worked OOTB. Googling revealed, https://linuxappfinder.com/package/xournal from which both 64 and 32 bit versions could be downloaded.

Using/Exploring various Puppies, when possible I run applications as externals: unpacked to a folder on /mnt/home as seen by several Puppies. The application can be started by left-clicking its executable in /usr/bin within its folder or tested for missing libraries by ldd on the right-click menu. [A menu-entry(pet) can later be created, or the executable simply dragged to the desktop to create a symbolic link for easy access].

For the 32-bit version, I downloaded the one designated Trusty 4.7-1ubuntu1 and unpacked it. It ran OOTB under Tahrpup, Xenialpup and Slacko 5.7.1. Your experience may vary as my systems have been significantly fleshed out.

I don't have a graphics tablet, and my typing is much faster than my hand-writing and more legible (especially using a mouse). So I'm please to report that Xournal also accepts type-written text.

Running xournal as an external, the postinstall script is by-passed. If you install it, you may want to follow the instructions rcrsn51 provided.
