HP LaserJet 1018 USB connection won't work

I'm trying to connect the above to a laptop running Puppy 4.1.1
Loaded the driver as recommended - CUPS offers me various solutions - I know USB's work because save the .sfs file to a flash drive. Printer says it can't find /lp0 or something similar and there are #15 options for USB interfaces. I'm running this through Vista - about to give up on Puppy in disgust since eveything seems incredibly complicated to configure. Newbie with scripting - any simple suggestions, apart from buying a serial cable and trying that via serial#1?
