Nice going, ttuuxxx, you're a star

Did you get a chance to try any of those audio links, as a nice eq would go down well, [hint, grin]?

ttuuxxx wrote:So does that mean you want more tiny apps?
Well, the calibre of what you have here is great but that wasn't really what I meant. BTW, Xchat and Xpad are in.

What I would really like is for someone to troll through the standard inclusions and find things that can be compressed. I was so impressed with what you managed with Icewm and thought that surely that should be possible with other stuff too.

Of course, only do that if you want. I'm not trying to dictate what you contribute. I'm just giving you ideas that you may or may not want to act upon.

I'm still having trouble getting the desktop icons to show up in a newly built Puppy, too. I have no idea why. It's like the globicons and PuppyPin files are being mangled somehow. Any ideas?

Cheers, mate.

I did manage to compile the latest mtpaint with improvements that came out last week, Its around 32kb larger than the older one in the repo.
It has a nicer save as etc.
Plus remember all the updated text editors I compiled
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 435#263435
If you wanted to free up space you could save around 550kb and remove Geany and use the latest beaver. Maybe add the new Geany to repo? you could also remove leafpad since Beaver is quick and has more functions than leafpad. saving 80kb.
most of these updated package could/should go to the repo. Has anything like that been arranged with Barry?

I just want to make sure we're on the same page, meaning if i went and spent like 5hrs making Seamonkey more user friendly, then Whodo picks a different release number my efforts would be wasted.

Remember that the DeepThought-jwm-tray package contains a fresh globicons file (maybe too fresh :) ). It does NOT include the info of original icons on desktop, only the links inside /root/my-applications/bin/. You can easily solve this by adding desktop icons from this directory rather than elsewhere. This is the source of the icon2desk function (left tray - 'add icon')

ttuuxxx wrote:when you say install Kompozer it makes a Uninstall file located in /root/.packages/kompozer-0.7.10.files
its basically a 17kb text file showing where everything was installed
yes 17kb, but compressed its 3077B so it would be very small on sfs
we could add say maybe 10 or 20 application files like abiword gxine etc then the user could uninstall the non-essentials via the puppy package manager. This does work when you remaster also, if you include /root/.packages/ during your remaster process you can uninstall applications you installed before the remaster, after you burn and boot your remastered cd.
I'm not seeing how it would work to actually uninstall packages that are in the read-only main file rather than in pup_save--but this does give me an idea, and it seems like a pretty simple one (to me, at least).

(1) Include files in /root/.packages/ for all packages that users should be able to uninstall when they begin the remastering process.

(2) As the first step in the remastering process, show users a list of packages they might not want, with brief explanations of what's in the packages and what other packages need them, and allow users to uninstall the ones they don't want.

(3) Include /root/.packages in /tmp/root by default during remastering.

Looking at a modified copy of packages.txt from Puppy 4.1.1 Unleashed, I would suggest that file lists for at least the following packages (if they're going to be in Puppy 4.2) should be included in /root/packages/. (I put "OFF" before the package names for ease of identification of these packages in my modified file, although they would be "on" by default in the actual distro.) I've omitted (I hope) all packages that I've already read are not going to be in 4.2.

This is not necessarily a complete list, but it should give you the basic idea--which is to make the remastering process more flexible, and the resulting .isos potentially even smaller than is now feasible without going to Puppy Unleashed.

Not wasted on Seamonkey-1.1.14, Jeff. I'm intending to use that as the main browser, email and html editor package. I've been using it since it was released and it runs without a single glitch. Never seen the Insert key issue with it either.

I plan on including Monkey Menus add-on for flexibility and Seafox as the default theme for familiarity, although Deepthought Seamonkey looks good too. Have a play and see what you can do with it as a package if you like.

I seem to remember pizzasgood curing this by compiling with debug-enabled. It might be worth doing this a sacrificing the extra weight.

I went to ibibilo for the pet and guess what I seen
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... ackages-5/
pet packages 5 OMG whats Barry thinking, he really shouldn't name woof packages, Pet packages 5.0. That just destroys the whole naming convention
whats puppy 5.0 going to use pet packages 6.0 how ludicrous and very unthoughtful. The only way to make it right would be puppy 5.0 based on woof / ubuntu so they could share the same repo.
Or we skip a number and go straight to 6.0, Or Barry could makes a new ibibilo account, since he's in his early alpha and host Woof, in a Woof directory? I'm sure I'm going to get my knuckles wacked with this outburst.

Anyways the newest version in the repo is seamonkey-1.1.11-1.pet
you must of downloaded the 1.1.14 from mozilla, or do you have a pet version link?

P.S maybe he could call his packages "vet"

Yep. Downloaded the self-installer in a 14Mb tarball from the Seamonkey home page. Simply unpack and run the installer script (not the binary). Works a treat for me.

Which options do you want, here's a list, so far only chatzilla is removed, But on Firepup I added a quicklaunch on the personal favorites thats opens #puppylinux @ freenode via chatzilla, I called it "Live Help" worked good, but I guess the users can use xchat, why have 2 things do the same thing, kind of like calculators and text editors, lol
Anyways which options please, thanks

Seamonkey browser, mail and editor. Don't know what personal security is about so I'll leave that one to you. I agree about chatzilla - no point if we've got Xchat.

It's an "Ill wind" ...

Well, it finally happened. After about 12 months of having to hold my HP Compaq nc6620 a certain way when booting, to compensate for a dry joint or two between the hard drive and the MB, it finally stopped booting no matter how I held it!

Luckily for me I was able to call on a full backup of all of my Puppy's - 2.16, 3.01, 4.12 and 4.20alpha - from a single 8Gb Sandisk Cruzer USB stick. A quick trip to J.B. Hi Fi and $AUD2000.00 later I have a new ASUS Pro50G laptop, Pentium T3400 Dual Core, 2Gb RAM, 250Gb hdd, nVidia graphics 256Mb, 15.4" WXGA screen, dual layer DVD-RW, etc. (well that was half of the $AUD2000 - the rest was a 22" LG Flatron monitor, Garmin GPS, Canon Pixma IP4600 3-in-1, Belkin laptop bag, mouse and USB hub, etc. - but why do things by halves? ).

I now have my new Puppy DEV system dual booting with Vista Home Premium Edition using the Vista boot loader. In fact I am posting this from the Puppy 4.2alpha on that machine. Yes, I will be HAPPY to write a HOWTO for those who want have their Puppy and eat Vista too! :P

It was really rather easy to do, after all the problems previously posted over dual booting with Vista, and I didn't have to go near the MBR at all. I now have a 100Gb VistaOS/ntfs partition, a 10Gb FAT32 restore partition, a 25Gb Linux boot partition that will soon contain maybe OpenSUSE 11.1, Ubuntu or something similar, 5 x Puppy partitions (yes, 5) of 10Gb each and another 50Gb Data only partition in ext2 format! Sometimes you can cry till you laugh, too!

Now all I have to do is to pay for it - good-bye Foxtel ... I hated paying for ads anyway! Oh well, at least the Puppy 4.2alpha is safe and almost complete. Just waiting on ttuuxxx's efforts with Seamonkey 1.1.14 and some niggling little issues with the interface setup. Be patient my little ones. Soon you will have a new Puppy birth to celebrate! 8)

Fantastic, does the Asus have the Splashtop Linux in Bios (probably not)?
I recently upgraded to an AMD dualcore. I was given an old hard drive so put XP on it. Do I ever use (XP - eh no - not really much point - maybe will have a look at it later . . .) I know you are more likely to use Vista as you have different requirements.

I am glad you had the common sense (geeks are bright but some are gormless) to have a backup - as I started reading this I was beginning to think No . . . not lost Deep Thought

8)
Be interested where you notice a difference. I noticed a difference with Open Office, much faster and pleasant to use. Also using GIMP rendering was much faster when doing effects.

My philosophy is to run a fast operating system on fast but tested hardware. The hardware I have is only 1GB of ram - ideal for the most demanding puplets such as Muppy BUT 2GB is needed for running Vista comfortably.

Now that Bugman has upgraded his software, maybe he will be tempted to support the failing world economy by buying some hardware? Doubt it but there will be some bargains soon so who knows :)

How soon for a Deep Thought Beta?

"Hey Lucy you have some explaining to do" lol
Umm WhoDo I don't know how to put this,
when I did the install script I tried a few different installs and they are all big compared to 1.1.11 original pet size 9.9 MBpet 33MB folder with mail, news etc

ok the first try was everything minus chatzilla
14MB pet 44MB folder

second try was 14MB pet 41MB folder
navigator
mail&news
personal security manager
spellcheck

The third try was just the browser and nothing else 11MBpet 33MB folder

This leads me to the conclusion That Barry didn't use the script he must of compiled the versions or used other versions that other team members post at mozilla. I'll look deeper into it tomorrow, Plus these versions use Gnome libs"
libgnomevfs-2.so.0 libbonobo-activation.so.4 libORBit-2.so.0
File /components/libimgicon.so has these missing library files:
libgnomeui-2.so.0 libbonoboui-2.so.0 libgnome-2.so.0 libbonobo-2.so.0 libgconf-2.so.4 libgnomevfs-2.so.0 libbonobo-activation.so.4 libORBit-2.so.0 "
Also the default seamonkey is compiled small, you can tell by looking at it, where as the auto installer just is compiled regular.
I have a feeling we are going to use the repo Seamonkey+mail++ 1.1.11 for a base and maybe ask Barry what his config's were used for seamonkey ,
That would give us more time to work this out.. If you want to go with 1.1.11 web+mail++ version its 4.1MB pet smaller I could download that pet and make it more user friendly? its up to you, your call. I personally would go for the 4.1.11 version since its a early stage version then I would say "ttuuxxx build your next Firepup its in !!!" LOL
at least I support "FirePup and security updates could be made easy, mozilla always has a list of updates to what parts, so you compile the latest version make a pet of the part could be as small as 10kb and could be as large as 1.2MB and have a update browser button in the menu where it compares package numbers, a higher the number it downloads and the same or lower number it doesn't. In theory it could be real simple. People on dialup don't want to download 14MB they would rather download 10kb. Anyways I'm off topic again.
