saving

#21 Post by raffy »

What has been difficult for me is saving at shutdown (it doesn't!) when loading Puppy 4.1.2 from frugal install. I don't have "pfix=ram" but still, it won't prompt for saving at shutdown. Does anyone ever encounter this?

Also, this puplet is quite close to supporting portableapps, as Wolf Pup is also supporting Wine in Puppy. See here for new discussion of portableapps:

I had a problem with saving my session with G_Pup as well.

i noticed that too. if i remember right it happens, if i booted without pup_save (with dummy-pup-save) but a pup_save does exist on the boot-drive (usb-hd/pendrive).

Aragon;

Not sure if this is related to your problem:

From a post by (im.saravanan-tue. 16 dec. 2008- 13:33

1." system reads pup_save only if it is in same folder
2. this I verified in usbdrive installation and cd-rw installation
3.in usbdrive install it is not possible to move pup_save to
other location to avoid frequent saving ram to pup_save
& freezing."

Seamonkey dependencies

#25 Post by T_Hobbit »

Hi

I'm trying barebones to make it my "full install OS" on a P3@500 MHz/256Mb/80Gb computer cos I don't need everything on the main Puppy. Just need a browser and little more.
If there is any retro version better for this kind of hardware let me know, please!

I want Seamonkey so I boot from CD, configurated network and run PETget. I selected Seamonkey 1.1.11 and...

"HOWEVER, these dependencies are missing:
(...)"

The list of missing dependencies goes out of the screen (1280x800). Sorry but no program to got a screenshot.
But it misses libgtkembedmoz.so and libxpcom and libplc4 and libnss3 and keeps going...
It seems that I need to install GTK and some other libs, but I tried other programs that also need dependencies and they were downloaded and instaled after, why it doesn't happen with Seamonkey?

BTW I'm writing this with the same Seamonkey that gave dependencies errors...

Thanks
T_Hobbit

event manager?

#26 Post by raffy »

Hobbit, you could be better off using the standard Puppy 4.1.2 (with Seamonkey). If pup_412.sfs is already copied to the hard disk (which the live CD tries to do after the first boot), your system will still run nicely.

As to pup_save not being created at shutdown, I suspect it is hard disk-drive-dependent. I say this because I've used one PC board with two hard disks: one prompts for saving at shutdown and the other doesn't (the newer drive doesn't). So some smart hard drives must be telling "no drive" signal to Puppy's event manager.

Hi WP,

I put G_Pup on a usb flash stick but it seems my core2duo isn't recognized (only one processor active). When booting it stops for a few minutes whilst loading kernel drivers to access hdd or the first line in the boot process.

Any ideas?..what is the command to check processors that are active? and what module should I load if it's not loaded at boot?

Best,
Eric

This G_Pup will make a nice base for a custom puplet..ty

Just a wild guess; but i think puppy has nosmp in grub menu
because it doesn't do dual core in present kernel.

Hi rjbrewer,

I haven't been keeping up on what's been happening so sorry if I misunderstood.

I thought G_Pup supported duo core.

just had a go at trying it - thanks woolfpup :!:
(it might be the answer to problems I had with Puppy4.0)
. . . and so far didn't have much luck
when trying to run from live cd, got the message:

Code: Select all

Performing a 'switch_root' to the layered filesystem. . .
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
I have checked md5sum before burning (was fine) and now I will try to burn the cd again, but something tells me that I might have another problem

ps what is the lock icon you mention? please

Not using frugal install. Full instalation here!
I just want a mozilla based browser that install on barebones without dependencies errors.
Standard Puppy runs well here but I don't need everything, just the base (barebones) and the programs I need.

This looks like what I have been loking for for a very old pc ive aquired.

But I dont quite understand what exactly is in it.

Is it puppy 4.1.2 but without any programs other than puppy specific stuff(ie. network and package manager etc)?

Or are some of the other applications left in?

Thanks,
James
