bare-bones-1.0.3

#1 Post by JaDy »

Got puppy-bare-bones-1.0.3 from http://www.nstsoftware.com/puppy/

DotPup - no go - guess it needs Mozilla or Firefox
PupGet - Firefox not listed

P.S. ibiblio must be busy, so I haven't yet downloaded the full 1.0.3

Are you sure dotpup is not available with Dillo? I thought it did HTTP download? Right click and all that . . . If not start with a Firefox download - Firefox has its own installer routine that works fine with Puppy - no need for a dotpup . . .

No Firefox listed in PupGet. And, DotPup from the Start menu does nothing (which is why I suspect it expects Mozilla). I didn't try going to the Wiki to get DotPups -- that might work with Dillo. Anyway, I really didn't need Firefox -- was just testing the bare-bones Puppy.

Running bare-bones, does executable "mozilla" exist?

You could do a link, symbolic link mozilla to dillo, but Dillo has poor
download capability.

Better to install Mozilla, Firefox or Opera using PupGet -- then executable
mozilla will/should be pointing to something valid.

I'm running the full 1.0.3 right now, and Firefox is listed in PupGet.

I launched the Barebones CD in my laptop.

Lobster - Although I didn't dial up to the Internet, I was able to open the DotPup Package Manager and see the packages list. At what point did you run into problems?

Barry - I did a Type 2 boot. I got the same two "Lobster icon" errors (ERROR = BROWSER LABEL & ERROR = WORD LABEL) on the desktop. When I did the Modem Wizard, the "ding" to indicate the response to the selection kept dinging. The only way I could find to get it to stop was to reboot. It did this three consecutive boots. I'll test Barebones more over the next few days.

Well apart from the icon errors which I thought were a result of the cut backs (so to speak) everything seemed fine. I was able to use Dillo after 3 clicks of the mouse

configure etherent
Use DHCP
and Exit wizard

On every version of Puppy since 9.9 connecting has been that easy. I am a lucky Puppy. There could be an auto check for ethernet and DHCP as it is very common and would mean (that like with most modern distros, a ready connected Puppy at first boot . . .

Oh Joy :)

bare-bones+DotPup+PupGet

Hi. Just tested 1.0.3 bare-bones in qemu. works.
I downloaded some DotPup's and Opera (still 7.54 -> better 8.0?), gxine and ripperX from putget packages. Put all inside the iso image. bootet.
For the DotPup staff, I just clicked inside rox on them and they installed just
fine.. For the PutGet stuff, I ran PutGet from the menu. Selected alien-packages and proceeded as stated.. All installed just fine...

Great work!

PS
Have fun :)

Sorry,

This is my fault, I haven't made the packages available to Barry yet.

Cheers
