I think you have misunderstood the rationale behind alpha releases. They are first steps at integration of a number of separate strands of work. They are not intended to be 100% functional. It is not whodos responsibility to fix all the bugs. For other people to fix the bugs they need to see them, that is why it is important to make regular releases at the alpha stage.

If you are testing alpha puppy releases you really should expect things to be broken and there is not much point in bothering to test unless you are able to roll your sleeves up and fix something or you have a particular test scenario that no-one else is able execute.

No, I understand the rationale, but surely adding faults, (not bugs) for a 3rd release is a bit backward.

I know you guys do sterling work and I admire you for it. I am trying to learn more about Puppy so I can help.

I'm a newbie but not a novice. I go back quite a long way to Sinclair ZX80 days when a 1k program was large Shocked

Finally SeaMonkey looks good and is useable. Really great.

I agree with Hairywill, Alphas are buggy, some bugs don't get fixed for a few releases, and sometimes when you fix a bug and its working great, you get a domino effect and you have a whole new set of bugs, We are just trying our best to get to the Beta stage, when that happens life will be good again. Until then, if you find some bugs please report them in detail, with a positive attitude because we are working very hard trying to fix as much as we can in the quickest amount of time. I for one really Like this release a lot, its came a long way since alpha 1. Its really good, the only bugs I've seen are.

- I have too many desktop drive icons,
- The default icewm theme is BRdelite when I would of chosen 'Elegance'
- The shutdown menu was left out (I did supply the package)
- Since we're using 24x24 Jwm menu could also be change easily to 24x24
- Manpage+Seahaven are missing menu icons
- Gtkam and libphoto weren't upgraded (I did supply the package)
- Gftp wasn't upgrade (I did supply the package)
- Htop didn't replace Top (I did supply the package)
- Didn't install the last MT Paint pet I made up with the new snapshop script included (I did supply the package)
but hell I supplied so many packages who could get it right the first time out?
Great Work WhoDo and rest of the developers, this release is going strong, I also found Seamonkey to be good and responsive Smile That really make me happy Smile
ttuuxxx

PS
the 2 missing icons from the menu was because the latest xdg menu wasn't used. When I did the fixmenus thing they appeared in IceWm.

First, my congratulations to all involved. A3 is a big step forward. Seamonkey is a real winner. However, I honestly feel another alpha release is in order. Alpha 3 is not nearly ready for the "good hammering" Beta 1 deserves (first beta should be highly usable so testers can really stress it). Final beta and RC should be "there" save for very minor annoyances.

I vote for a fourth alpha. This is just one man's opinion, but I've been around the barn a whole lot'a times Wink.

I apologise if I appeared negative, far from it I applaud all your efforts.

Dogone probably said what I felt, although more eloquently.

I feel the two faults such as the drive icons and the pmount opening everytime are added in faults that shouldn't be there.

I have two machines running just on alpha puppies. You are all too fast and knowledgeable on puppy for me to report anything I find before I'm sure i found it Confused

OK, one I think I have found is on the rox right clicks, I'm getting the sylpheed and seamonkey email icons as the warning triangle and suggested 'deleted'

It is great work from Tecnosaurus and should not be forgotten or wasted Hope to see it in the beta.
http://pupweb.org/desktop/

Tecnosaurus what Warren needs is a file called home.htm - can you send it to him and the css?
placed here and the css also placed here
Code:
usr/share/doc/home.htm

Hey lobster that page you want, we could put a link to it and place it on the personal favorite bar next to the puppy forum link, I personally like google as the home page, because it what most people use in general, not all want to visit that page every time you open a tab or make a new page, its a bit much, I do find that page to be very useful Smile and would be great to have. like in the image below

My personal preference for a default homepage. Is a locally stored file that helps to orientation much the same as barry's does now.

Setting google as the homepage provides very little added value to the end user. Anyone reasonably competent can set their own homepage later.

If the user is not online already, using the webdesktop as the homepage will be a bit pointless and frustrating, none of the applications will work. If the webdesktop is stored online then it is possible for it to be maintained and updated in between puppy releases. Given this I think it would be much better for the homepage to provide a prominent link to the web desktop which should probably include a "set this as my homepage" button, I believe it is possible to script this.

Ok well the cups thing is a bit of pain, the last time we tried to fix it a total different model of cups was installed and it worked with the newer package supplied, maybe using some parts of the older one, So now its dead, I tried Patriot's version and it wanted me to reboot, and also use chmod etc, so I took apart my version, added barry's script and my kill print/restart script, added my .desktop file and icon Smile and tried it and it worked: Patriot and I were both using the same Cups release so if this worked than the package below it should work. Please test it.
Just install the package,
fixmenus,
restart jwm/icewm
click menu/System/Manage Printing and you should be good to go.

I just check Patriot's version which is the base of the above link, plus the few extra small parts, but it was missing the documents, And thats what the whole web GUI is based on, So I added them and re-uploaded a fixed package. So please try again with the above link. Cups would be a lot easier to fix if we had a version of puppy with no cups at all installed, then it would be a clean start which would be way more easier to work on.

OK, I've looked at the missing icons in the top tray.

Two are incorrectly linked, Galculator and Leafpad.

Others are missing and not on CD.
star48.png
search48.png
process48.png
wifi48.png

If you click on space where star48 would be it launches Ptray app. However the app list does not correlate to the actual top tray. There are apps there that are not showing and the order as given does not match.

Maybe Olive, but don't get rid of Quicksilver! And yes, please do put Stardust back in; it's the only GTK2 theme I've yet seen that looks better than anything you can come up with in Tk 8.5. Smile

Me too, especially since the so-called second alpha wouldn't boot and was very quickly replaced by the third, which should be called the "second bootable alpha." There should be at least one alpha in which you don't get a 404 error instead of a printed page; all desktop drive icons represent real drives and are accurately shown as mounted or unmounted; and you can use the sound mixer.

Look, I'm using Puppy 4.1.1 right now, and I can print, use the sound mixer, and rely on drive icons to tell me the truth. These are pretty basic things that should be ironed out before the beta stage of 4.2. Beta testing, I think, should be for getting rid of non-obvious bugs, not obvious ones.

Sorry to say having no luck with printing....
I believe this is the latest pet...cups_std-1.4b2-i486-v2.pet, I renamed it so I could tell the difference on my stick..."cups_std-1.4b2-i486-v2 2 03 09.pet"
It did not execute...(rephrase - did not produce a final dialog box), so I went to manage processes, killed cups, and ran the previous version, no longer did I get 404 error but simply received not found on the ...localhost.

gutenprint-5.2.3-i386-no-ppd.pet is not seeming to do anything... or must cusp be working for it to unpack correctly... I am not receiving any final dialog box.

Did not recheck, but last try cheap dongle was found and network working, however standard wifi on this IBM Thinkpad is not detected, even with autoscan in the wizard load dialog.

I posted to the Alpha 2 a few other items as I could not find Alpha 3 thread... what is the easiest way to find the new thread...even kept searching on Google to find alpha3. Sorry for basic question.

Keep Moving Forward... that is called progress... even getting up in the morning is forward progress!!
