GIMP 2.6 for Puppy 4.2 Unleashed: Is it ready? Will it be? |
|
The title pretty much says it all. Apparently there have been some problems with dependencies for GIMP 2.6. Can anybody tell me if those have yet been solved to the point that GIMP 2.6 (and all needed dependencies) will be ready for inclusion in Puppy 4.2 Unleashed? If so, thanks in advance!

Can you provide a link to wherever it was apparent?
I haven't had any trouble with jcoder24's gimp 2.6.x and dependencies
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=241187#241187, although I haven't used it too heavily. No one else has reported problems in that thread, and it has been around for 4 months.
Puppy 4.1.1 has a slightly older gtk than Gimp 2.6 is supposed to require, but jcoder hacked it to compile anyway... so the answer to your question is yes, it is ready (if no one has elsewhere reported trouble with jcoder's packages); or no, you need to upgrade gtk (if people have had problems).

Is it me or are application 'updates' more about demanding large numbers of new dependancies rather than providing new features?
curious

I think in this case Gimp 2.6 is a fairly significant improvement
The Gimp has a reputation for not being very intuitive, and 2.6 brought the first series of changes needed to make it more user-friendly. And there were other big changes too.

It's the same link you gave:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=241187#241187. I was going from memory when I said "dependencies" were the problem. On refreshing my memory, I find that there's a link that was supposed to be updated but wasn't, and a mention of several dependencies to be found through the same link, with a suggestion that there might be a problem with dependencies in Puppy versions other than 4.1:
| Quote: | This was compiled in Puppy 4.1 and may not work in other puppies. Downloads available from ftp://puppy:puppylinux@ftp.servage.net/jcoder24/. This link will be updated when the files are mirrored (or moved to the correct location).
Requires gegl, babl, glib, libopenraw, libwmf (all available from the above link) and sdl-1.2.9.pet |
Then there's a mention of another package that includes the dependencies:
| Quote: | I added the dependencies in one package (+ufraw & lcms):
http://www.openplatformeducation.org/gimp-2.6.3-i486.pet |
And then a mention of a third package, with a suggestion of a dependency problem, plus a need for an .sfs file that GIMP 2.4 didn't need:
| Quote: | Gimp 2.6.4, but I compiled it in Ultrapup, it will not work in Puppy 4.12 I fear, because we use a newer glib there.
I made an Iso "newyearspupMU.iso" that contains it.
In addition you will need python+gdesklets_411.sfs. |
Which of these is supposed to be the package that's all ready for inclusion in Puppy 4.2 Unleashed, with all needed dependencies either included or readily available, and what is now the correct link for that package?

This one -->http://www.openplatformeducation.org/gimp-2.6.3-i486.pet
is one that I put together using some tested packages of Gimp (not gimp-photo) but with some frequently requested plugins and all of the dependencies - It is already in the installer menu on the web desktop
Gimp-photo looks promising though & I will add it to the web desktop as well since it seems to be testing out ok.

Hey technosaurus
its a modified gimp so its not an 'official' gimp at all
and will conflict with other installed gimps
because they use the same base files
more info here main website
http://www.gimphoto.com/
thanks if you add it to the other options for artist
there aren't many good apps for artist on linux
for photo editing

Good point. I will add a mouse over note that the two conflict. I also added a full inkscape with dependencies and am looking to add more.
Here is a thread I started to get pets to add to the web-installer

Beware of
http://www.openplatformeducation.org/gimp-2.6.3-i486.pet
Aparently, it broke some of my software, some problem with glib, similar to
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=519019
I now get

I compiled the latest version on Quirky today.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=50364
might work on 4.2
I would delete /root/.gimp-2.XX <--hidden settings folder first before installing

I think 4.2 has the same version of gtk and glib as 4.1, in which case it won't work... unless you hacked it like jcoder24 did, to run with the slightly too old gtk, and the user will still need to update glib.

Hello,
Does any Gimp 2.6 French version exist? If not, how could I localize this English version to French?
Thank you a lot for your kind attention.
Best regards.

I see those in the desktop and will try, Technosaurus.
