dell laptop 1526, no booting kernel

#221 Post by ferikenagy »

As i had reported time ago(and some other members too on different dell), the last puppy that boots the kernel on Dell laptop 1526 was puppy alpha 406 with kernel 2.6.25.15.,next kernel 2.6.25.16 after writing "booting kernel." it stops, hangs.

Initially I supposed some drive/modules change in kernel from 2.6.25.15 to 2.6.25.16, or some changes in <init> script from "initrd" , for my surprise the only difference between them where some encrypting modules,so not there was the difference.

the answer to this bug seems to be in kernel compile configuration, because for my surprise 2 experimental puplets with the same kernel 2.6.25.16 but with different configuration from standard, both with SMP enabled (to run on multicore enviroment) boots & runs with no problems ,on my Dell 1526, these are:
galipup : g_pup-1.2.iso, (with MU SMP kernel for 4.1.2) and lxde-pup411-k2.6.27.5-dillo-v01.iso

Now there is still some question: if the difference is in enabling SMP only or there was some other difference in configuration that makes it to work on my dell (processor is AMD Turion 64x2 TL60)

Both my desktops are AMD athlon's 64x2 and I never Had a issue with cpu's.If that helps, I never needed SMP enabled to run Puppy, Would be nice to have it, but the size difference is a lot if I remember right:)

I just printed with abiword, Keep in mind I never used Linux printing before yesterday really, so this is all new to me, But on the other hand I'm pretty good a compiling and getting things to work, so feel confident :) Anyways How does Abiword print, the way I did it was create a PDF and saved it, then opened the pdf and printed it, when I tried 'Generic Postscript' Abiword Crashes, and when I ran it via command line, and tried it again I got this message
# abiword

** (abiword:9606): WARNING **: Can't g_module_open /usr/lib/libgnomeprint/2.18.2/modules/libgnomeprintcups.so

lpr: Error - no default destination available.
Broken pipe

So was the Generic Postscript always broken in Abiword ?
I'll look for a fix

1. Has this problem been fixed? I still get it.
I checked my e-mail with Claws and got the mail, but I also got an error message saying "The Bogofilter plugin couldn't filter a message. The command `bogofilter -T -b` couldn't be run."
2. One of the first things I do with each new "I think I'll keep this one" installation is to edit rc.shutdown (in /etc/rc.d) and add an 'eject' statement at the bottom. This enables me to remove the CD I forget was still in the tray. Otherwise I have to power up just to take it out which often means aborting a boot-up. Is this A Bad Idea for deep and mysterious Linux reasons, or is it An OK Idea? If it's the latter could it go into the release?

@ttuuxxx I've just printed OK from Abiword with your CUPS packages. No intervention was required; I choose the 'Generic Postscript' printer and it went to the printer I set as Default in CUPS.

It "just worked" - praise be. :D

It would eliminate some confusion if the words 'Generic Postscript' could be replaced by 'Default CUPS Printer' (or something to that effect), but I have no idea if that's something that you can influence in the compilation, or if it's too deep down in the code to be accessible.

Hey WhoDo could you give me 24hrs before the end of the deadline, I'm working on cups issues, and size so far I've saved around 1.5MB compressed in Ghostscript alone. I'm sure I can get you to the 100MB mark, plus have other things working better, Cups, Icewm, and maybe tcl if I don't run out of time? well its up to you but we aren't in a rush even though I'm feeling it. Most the day I had to spend with my Wife because its Valentines Day, nice day for a deadline anyways, Its like having me in 2 places at once all day, lol

Hey nic I compiled libgnomeprint and libgnomecups , installed it, restarted abiword and Now I have 4 selections in the print section of abiword, How many do you have?
Also if you have less than 4,
first go to /usr/lib/libgnomeprint <-- delete folder
then install these 2 pets and restart abiword and see how many you have .
I'm not sure if I have the extra selections because I compiled the packages or because I did the cups setup the way you told me. But its strange the way the libsgnomeprint is setup by default on here because it also has the libsgnomecups in the same directory but when you compile them, they are in 2 directories and not one.

That link is apparently no longer valid, Wolfpup's new .pet is at:

Thanks Jim, I'm a tight schedule right now, I'll look into it when I'm finished the cups/icewm/tcl for the beta, not to put you last, just that I have to focus on the main distro first, with my post above, when your using the older filter do you have 4 selections in abiword like I do for 1 printer? like the picture above? I'm not getting much feedback and could use some response so I know where I'm heading.
I'm almost done thinning-out Cups, I've removed around 1MB so far from the package and I'm just about ready to test it before releasing it.
Right about now I could use a few testers, This whole Beta now thing is a bit over the top, I wished I had more notice, Like a PM or something. Oh well you play the cards your dealt. Thanks again

You want testers to try out your CUPS package on Alpha4 to see if it's ready for Beta1, right? Sure. Me. Let me know as soon as it's done.

backgrounds - desktop and app
.. possibly the wallpapersetter issue may benefit from some looks at it (see MU's post on p6 of this thread). The 'setter on the menu didn't work when last I booted into P42a4 (nada, no gui no interface dead), but as usual setting from a r-click and via the backdrop is simplest (even if /root/Choices/ROX-background.jpg isn't updated .. and there lies the oddness if one doesn't quite get how the bg is set in various wms besides jwm and ice). Not to mention the differences in switching wms via the 'soft' or via prompt (each has advantages but it's sort of odd to have a image-bg and etc in bb).

Very nice add with the murrine - more control of gtk is always appreciated and the new themes are a bonus win-win. Will there be a nice gui configurator for icewm in the beta, rc or final? (finally got around to the prefs and it's a bit much at 1st:) but fairly clear to mod linebyline if one so desires, even as gorgeous as `tis).

If you can get me 3Mb, we'll be all but ready for the RC! Sorry but I had to leave Murrina out because of size problems. Clearlooks is still in of course. I'll give you back Murrina if you can get me the 3 meg!
I managed to get you 2.954MB compressed, Thats close enough to 3 MB when murrine is only 37kb <--- like you had to leave out 37kb when you overshot by 2mb anyways, so lets do some math.
bloated beta#1 102MB-minus 2.954 = 99.046MB hmmmm how about adding alsaplayer+streamtuner + murrine? ,,,Math time

99.046MB default
00.446688 Alsa+streamtuner
00.03853 murrine
------------
99.55141MB <--------Lots of space :) well under 100MB limit :) LOL

Here's the 2 packages for TCL/TK what I've done to them is
Stripped the bins and so files
removed the 'man' pages and thats it, Left everything else, so you can compile etc with them, :) If you want to remove the dev files feel free to but it doesn't add that much space.
Plus we need them for compiling unless WhoDO is going to put the devs in the devx??

Cups

#238 Post by Minnesota »

After loading all the pet's.. you can't rename one of them can you? Anyway...running on very slow small laptop, so it took quite a while to load.

Install procedure found my Canon ip4300 no problem on the USB line...set it up.. tried abi word first to see if would run a test as the main test print from Cups is very long... more on that... NO Canon printer listed. Went to Spread sheet.. it shows the printer and printed a test.. OK :). Back to Cups and set definite DEFAULT as the Canon. Still does not show in Abiword. :(

OK I selected generic Postscript printer and after some time it printed on the printer...slowly

Print looks to me very high quality.. so I suspect set up is now for either 600 dpi or simply postscript. I think it is possible to reduce the resolution and gain speed again.

Conclusion... seems to work the same as what was sent yesterday???? I know there is not time to clean up the thousand questions ask by Cups but looking forward to that :). THANKS ttuuxxx and everyone.

With a fresh copy of alpha4, I did the following: Abiword only gave me three options, but one was my printer.

It printed fine.

To get abiword working this is what I did
click the Administration tab
click manage settings
click your printer that is listed
pull down the administrator tab and select 'Set As Server Default'
fill in the pop-up with
user = root
password = woofwoof
then a new window opens and close it and restart abiword and test it :)
ttuuxxx
