Re: Unable to download 9.62

#61 Post by hydrurga »

Hi guys,

I downloaded and unzipped the Opera 9.62 zip and then, using ROX-filer, double clicked on opera-9.62.pet to install it. All seemed to go swimmingly, but subsequently typing "opera" at the command line gives the error:
# opera

OPERA_DIR unset and not found at expected location (/usr/share/opera)
Anyone any idea what the problem is? I'm running Puppy 4.1.1 on a full hard disk install.

Many thanks,

Pete

I cant get this web address to display in Opera properly http://livecam.courchevel.com/index.php?langue=2, it should be a 360deg scrolling webcam image, and is fine in Seamonkey on the same system. I have Opera 9.62. Does anyone have any ideas?????

I'm having the same issue. Though, that I would be patient and wait for a response from someone before posting. Sadly for Opera lovers with issues installing, one has yet to be forthcoming.

It is rather amazing that it is so difficult to get Opera running on Puppy. It's such a great browser. I am not a Firefox fan, per se. But, I did install Firepup on a celeron 700 laptop:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 35&t=34876

And, it runs like a scalded dog.

It will have to do until I can get Opera running. Though Firepup marks the first time I have ever enjoyed using an otherwise sluggish FF, Opera is just too feature rich without the aggravation of installing a zillion silly extensions to make a full-time move to any Firefox derivative.

I do hope that someone will help with this issue.

Hi guys,
I'm typing this in Opera 9.62 downloaded from:
http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/opera-9.62.pet
Installed and running no problems.

Did you check to see if /usr/share/opera/ is there? What about /usr/bin/opera?

If not then try changing the name of opera-9.62.pet to opera-9.62.tgz. Click on it and extract files. Open the new opera-9.62 folder and then copy the etc and usr folders to /
(menu->filesystem->Rox then go up one level). Merge the folders and then try to start opera.

If that doesn't work then try downloading the pet again. Could be a bad file.

The link in Wolf pup's first post asks for a username and password. I must be clueless, but what would that be? Thanks, Kurt

flash not working?

#71 Post by jaddison »

This is something I've encountered before--I just installed the 9.63 opera, along with the posted java and flash plugins, and can't get flash working.

Is there a trick to this? I must be a complete moron, b/c it seems like everyone else is having fun...

Thanks. I'll probably download it soon as I had a few problems with posting from Opera 10.0 (the text overflowed the sides of the boxes)..

A quick Opera question; does anyone know how to update Opera 10? I've been trying to update it to 10.10 but haven't found any way of doing it (unlike Firefox and Flock where it's easy to do so).

Thanks in advance,

Colonel Panic .

I wondered about the same thing... and then read a blurb in the Opera forums about the Update feature being for Windows (maybe Mac, too -- I didn't pay much attention to the Mac reference). The same forum post pointed out that there are too many variations in the Linux genealogy to have an automated update feature that would cover each and every one.

Now, if you are wondering about a manual do-it-yourself upgrade, my best guess is that it would involve compiling and re-installing -- but then, I'm just an end-user, not a programmer.

for linux version there's no auto update
need to download from ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/linux/1010/final/en/i386/
manually and install

i have installation of opera via tgz ( not sfs) and to upgrade i ran install.sh from newer opera tgz( better to run from console to asnwer questions where to install and what files to overwrite)

i hope update will be included in next opera 10.5 wich is in pre-alpha stage ( not yet for linux though) and will not depend on qt so there's a chance to be in puppy iso:)

Thanks for the replies

I thought as much, maybe I could find a way to disable the update notification which I find distracting?

Colonel Panic,

From inside your Opera browser, go to

Tools > Preferences (Ctrl+F12) > Advanced > Security > Opera Update Scheme
