PupTV

#1 Post by puppyluvr »

:D Hello,
Well, here is a first draft of PupTV... :D
Currently only 5 channels, but as more are found, I`ll make Pets to add them to this app.
Uses either Mplayer or Gxine engine..

Installs to /usr/local....Creates menu item under "Multimedia"...
Uninstall`s with Petget...

Feedback appreciated....

@ 1 am Edit...Updated to version 0.3
A few tweaks and more channels...

:D Hello,
Well, I see 1 person D/L the Alpha, and 1 person D/L Version 0.2..
I really thought this would have drawn more interest...
Version 0.3 will have an expanded set of channels..( 10 and growing )
Little by little, I`m finding them......With help...
An updated channel list will be available as a Pet for Pwidgets TV as well, when I`m satisfied with the performance of each channel I`ve added.
This is not a new idea, and has been done in Puppy before, ..Just a new interface...And newer links...
@This is also a test of "GUI hacking" so any feedback (from BOTH of you..LOL) on the interface is appreciated...
BTW, although this app opens the stream in fullscreen, the "F" key toggles, so you can put it in a window, any size, and move it where you want it...

Strangely enough (since I made it) it works really well...FOX Japan is in English, BTW, except the commercials..Sometimes the first click doesnt do it, and a second is needed to get a channel started, I will work on that...As a side note, I was watching NCIS on it the other day, and they were trying to "hack into" a computer system..They showed the screen, and it was a Linux boot sequence....Clear as Day....LOL....

Well, it works for me, so I`ll keep expanding / refining it for myself if no-one else...
Except "you two" :D Whoever you are....THX...

It didn't create a menu item (Puppy 4.1.2)...but I got the desktop icon from:
/user/local

Problem is,...that it uses MPlayer. Everytime I've tried to install MPlayer I've crashed my Puppy for some reason.

:D Hello,
@nitehawk,
Thanks, I don`t know what I was thinking...Mplayer isnt the default on Puppy, Gxine is.
Rebuilt the App to run either...So far I think Gxine loads a little slower, and streams a lot better.. :D
However, I have Gxine 5.11...Havent tested yet on a "Standard Puppy"..Anyone???
Edited original post... :D

@@Version-0.3 now uses either Mplayer or Gxine engine..
Please uninstall earlier versions before installing...

*********Channel List**********
FOX Japan : Straight network feed, programming in English, commercials in Japanese

FOX 11 LA : Live news feed..

BBC News : Latest BBC headlines

NASA and NASA2 : Programming and Live Feeds from NASA..

SciFiChannel : Old Sci-Fi "B" movies

Cartoons : Classic Cartoons

Baseball : Historic Games ect...

Thx......... :D

:D Hello,
@P.G. man, its Puppy, LOL...
(However, they do exist)...
But, I`m having enough trouble finding P.G. channels....
Apparently, the Advertising Media Conglomerates ruined streaming media in the US...
Still going through them (new links) little by little...

:D Hello,
Yea, I actually posted a mini-tutorial on how to D/L .asx files with wget and find the mms addresses..
But a lot of them are encoded differently, no .asx playlist file or mms address...
Still hacking at them....(This is my therapy....)...(OOOOOOMMMMMMMMM)...
:D

@Edit...."Edited"...LOL.....

Everytime I click on the Puptv icon,...it opens with "starting MPlayer"...
then nothing happens (that's why I thought I needed to have MPlayer installed).

EDIT: uninstalled version 0.2,...then installed 0.3....
still nothing. I click on Puptv from the menu,....then click on a channel, It comes up with the notice: (something like) "Starting Mplayer, please wait"
Then nothing happens. (alas).

OK!!!! SUCCESS!!! Hey,...I'm on dialup,..so it aien't great,...(but I'm happy that I got something!). This is very interesting.

hey, an idea

why don't you make the channels as text files and execute them with a script (please see how pwidgets tv plugin works) and also put an option to add/remove channels easily (also see how pwidgets tv plugin works), and you're welcome to use and hack the script ..if you want that is..

:D Trio,
Ah yes, my friend..I have been reading your script closely.. :D
Just waiting for the "light bulb above my head" to click on... 8)
Am still a complete "newb", but am learning via hacking other, more skilled, peoples scripts..IE you, ect... :D

You know, Trio, a fullscreen button on Pwidgets TV Channel Choser would make this a mute project...
Also, why does TV channel change restart pwidgets, )or am I on yesterdays version again..LOL...)
Regards,....Jay..

yes, mate..in pwidgets I use xwinwrap to exec mplayer in order to have the window the right size of pwidgets and the right place where I wanted...but it has to be "poked" to show on the desktop layer (excatly like xonclock)..that's why we always start pwidgets when change channels, if not, other widgets will disappear after the screen is "poked"

and I ommited the full screen mode, because last time it was interfering with pwidgets..

BTW: I am FAR way from being experienced coder

:D Hello,
@Dinky,
Thanks, I`m glad someone else is enjoying it too...I can hardly turn it off..
As for more channels, I`m working on it..Its hard to find constant streams..ie 24/7..
I`m working on the interface to include multi part streams as I have a few that are in parts..
Basically, go to a website that has a video stream on it and look through the source for either the stream address, ( mms or rtsp ) or an .asx file (playlist) which can be downloaded and opened in a text editor to find the stream address..
It is slow going, and has about a 5% success rate so far..
I`ll be adding a few more this evening...
Thx...Jay...

Pup Tv rocks

#18 Post by joel »

I cant turn it off. The one thing i love of tv versus watching things on the web is the randomness of what on tv. This makes my laptop rock even more! God puppy linux is great. Kepp it up and let us know if there will be any updates with more channels, when you find some more. Thanks for the hard work~!!!
