I've just uploaded the dPup ISO to puppylinux.asia that I mentioned earlier. Caneri has to transfer it from puppylinux.asia to puppylinux.ca before you can download it though.

Get it here when it's ready:

Hi Jack,

People can download from .asia with
user=puppy
password=linux

I am copying to .ca right now so when the md5.txt is there it's ready.

Good to see to you again,
Eric

@lobster

You could try the uPup that you downloaded on a netbook (Asus or such like) and see if that starts X. I don't think Ubuntu includes the open source Nvidia drivers. In real Ubuntu (as against uPup) if the system sees an Nvidia card, it will offer to download and install the proprietary driver. That won't happen in Woof uPup.

dPup on the other hand, does include ATI and as far as I know - Nvidia open source drivers - so it should work on your normal computer.

Would be interested to know how this works out for you.

One "good" thing, Lenny has stayed with Xorg 7.3.

Tronkel, regarding those two packages that were missing:

libdevmapper
The actual missing package is 'libdevmapper-event', which is in Ubuntu Intrepid but does not exist in Debian Lenny. So, I have removed it from DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS-debian.

xorg-common
This one also is in Ubuntu, but Lenny it seems needs 'x11-common' instead. So, I have made the substitution in DISTRO-PKGS-SPECS-debian.

I'm running 0setup for Lenny right now, it's doing the conversion to standard format ...which takes awhile.

Regarding repositories, are there any large Lenny repos out there apart from the official ones?

My final option when xorg does not work was to use xvesa. However I tend to only require xvesa on steam powered computers as used by Luddites. :wink:

Well guys, dpup worked as expected with my Nvidia, just as spup (Slackware based) did in Woof Alpha2 . . .

Patriot has done wonders with getting CUPS and other Linux printing
stuff to work in Puppy. Could save a huge amount of time for you Barry.

Tronkel,
Is that the substitution that you made? I need to compare those packages, I had a quick look at x11-common and I'm not so sure it's an appropriate replacement for xorg-common.

Yes, that's it - xorg-common replaced by X11-common.

I googled around but couldn't find any reference to xorg-common, so I decided to try X11-common. It must be doing something right. This is the first Puppy of any series where Xorg has correctly configured the ATI Radeon graphics card that I have in my main PC (without having to resort to say MU's ATI-Catalyst dotpet - which is a bit on the large side. Full resolution 1400 x 900 at the first attempt

Cannot be sure that it is the correct substitution though. There could be some other reason that the ATI card is now correctly configured (different xorg version maybe)

Debian is the only other Linux distro that has been able to do this on my hardware, so it's no real surprise that dPup has also managed it.

Since I've been running dPup for the last few days and having installed both Iceweasel and Icedove (Debianised versions of Firefox and Thunderbird respectively), I've noticed that both of these apps seem to run faster and are more stable than the original Mozilla packages. Also the original Mozilla versions seem to have longer start-up times - especially if a few extensions have been installed. I reckon that these Debian compiles are good. Iceweasel is at v3.06 and Icedove is at 2.0.0.19 (Mozilla equivalent versions).

Would it therefore not be a good idea to replace Seamonkey with an Iceweasel/Icedove combo in Woof?

Or maybe ttuuxxx could use his surgical instruments on them and reduce the fat even more?

A DEB and or pet package of this combo would be a good idea as well.

ok I downloaded about 10 debian packages for Iceweasel 3.0.6 and have it working on 4.2. It has the same issues on puppy 4.2 as firefox 3.0.6, if you goto https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox and try to move the scroll bar up and down it drags terribly, the mouse is at the top of the page and about 30sec later the scroll bar reaches, I did try last week replacing, glib,gtk2,cairo,pixman,pango and then compiled firefox and the same issue happened, I also updated flash to 10 and the same issue.

Hey Tronkel The Iceweasel I downloaded from debian was based on 3 series, 3.0.6 if you want the debian package as a pet. Here it is.

Yes this is exactly the point. Firefox is sluggish on some hardware and also in Puppy 4 series. There's something wrong with it.

In dPup though, it's a different story. It is fast. Might well be due to a different xorg version or even a video driver setup. Either way, I'd visualise Iceweasel/Icedove as being something for Woof dPup certainly. If it could be fixed for 4 series as well then OK too.

As I mentioned earlier, it might be worth considering having Iceweasel and Icedove together as a combo withing the same pet package. That combo could be an alternative to Seamonkey in dPup - if not in a standard build then perhaps in a puplet derivative of dPup.

Thanks for looking at this 8)

hey raffy that 1 nice theme, is smaller than the 2 themes that came with it, well if you combined both themes its was around 600kb, that orange theme was around 460kb, So I kill 2 flat themes and add one nice rounded theme and save like 150kb :). I do like bling as in icons, and backgrounds and thats about it. :) simple yet effective.

but yes I'm going to work on this, I would like to trim it down :)
