pupeee 4.2

#1 Post by luther349 »

everything should work out of the box sound wifi and the hotkeys. i applyed all the eeepc patches found on hear and remastered the iso enjoy. tested on a eeepc 900a.

drivers included.
madwifi
intel-hda sound patch
hotkeys-patch
eeepc acpi

known bugs
1. eeepc 1000he wifi uses diffrent drivers madwifi does not see it correctly.
2. puppy network manager is the only app that works with wifi, does not always find your network but it will after a few attempts. this seems to only happen if theirs multi wifi connections available.
3. wpa long keys said to not work. i use short keys they work for me.

installing.

some people seem to have issues with installing pupeee onto there ssd. theirs many easy ways to install pupeee

1. burn iso to a cd and use a usb cdrom. and use the universal installer.
2. use unetbootin to put the iso onto a usb stick or sd card. once that has been done and pupee is running mount the usb stick or sd card like you would if it was just inserted this will fix the installer saying theirs missing files. simply removing and reinserting may also work. it just has to get mounted.

extras.

hear is the wifi driver for newer model eeepc found in the 701sd and up. this is the rtl8187se driver patched to work in puppy and pupeee uses the same kernel just patched a bit. rember adding a new driver needs a restart for it to work. so you will need to save your session to something untill i add it to the iso. or you can remaster your own iso yourself. unfortunately at this time i can not find any drivers for the new touchpad so it works mostly as a mouse and that can ware the buttons fast best to use a external for now.

mirrors.

all is fixed on my eee and im back online so ill be working on the new one.

all pets used are found hear. as well as more.

Could you upload the file to other than Megaupload?

Seems like I can't access it.

Great news Luther. This is just what I was after for my 901, an eeepup based on 4.2.

You mention including the eeepc_acpi drivers. Does the iso also include eee-control (http://greg.geekmind.org/eee-control/)? If not it should'nt be too awkward for me to add it.

Would it be possible to get a detailed list of all the changes you had to make to get this working? I am dabbling with various pups at the moment and it would be nice to be able to apply your hard work to any pup I try. For example a diet 4.2 pup like deeper Blue (http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=40486)

Thanks for the hard work.

no i did not install eee-controle only driver fixes. the acpi makes the hotkeys work and the hotkeys patches make the fn key work instead of using alt. i made this iso beng i had the same issue of hunting down all the fixes myself and figured i would save some people the trouble.

the pets i used are located on this post. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34159

Thanks for the response Luther349. After some initial playing with various versions of 4.2 and pupeee42 I have a few interesting findings based specifically on the 901GO.

Sound seems to be supported straight out of the box on standard 4.2 on the 901GO. I think sound hardware on the 901 and 901GO are the same so both should be supported out of the box without needing to add additional drivers.

I had to be careful with wifi as I think the 901 and 901GO have slightly different wifi cards and may require different drivers as mentioned over in http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34159.

Another useful tool is eee-control which acts like the SHE utility on the windows versions of eee. However eee-control gets a bit funny about which acpi drivers are already installed when it tries to install. I havent been able to establish what the conflicts are yet.

Eee PC 901 & Puppee

Does this version support bluetooth for the 901? At the moment I am running Puppy 4.2 and cannot get bluetooth working which is a real bummer as am using, or trying to use, a bluetooth mouse.

Gebbly--

I've always wanted to see eee-control work with my eee 900 and Puppy Linux. Have you compiled its pet? Could you post it?

Many, many thanks,
Jake

Hi Jakfish, I havent recompiled eee-control, however:
eee-control was implemented in a .deb.
I have got hold of the tools to convert .deb and .rpm packages into .pet packages. See http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=39756 and install unrpm.undeb.pet and deb2pet.rpm2pet-0.0.4.pet

This succesfully converted eee-control into a .pet. However as stated in the info at http://greg.geekmind.org/eee-control/#requirements you need to make sure that you have eeepc_acpi or eeepc_laptop installed (both included in kernel 2.6.27+). I got as far as establishing that I think the pupeee has neither of these installed that I could find.

Also as detailed on that website you have to be careful as "eee-control is incompatible with most Eee PC ACPI scripts, fan-control scripts, et cetera".

So getting eee-control to work is still in progress for me.

Hi, Gebbly,

Yes, that's as far as I've gotten. I made it into a pet, it installs, but nothing happens, probably because it lacks the proper *.ko's.

I'm interested in it for its CPU settings. I've successfully installed CPU scaling, but I'm not sure it's scaling as much as it's throttling in an eee (I've read that scaling doesn't truly work with an eee).

Thanks for posting back,
Jake

From my understanding I think other clocking tools are only trying to affect the CPU whilst Asus' SHE and eee-control actually alter things like the FSB which I think should make more of a difference.

i tried puppy stock the intel-hda driver is included but it needs to be patched at least in my 900 it did. wifi also was not working even thow others said stock puppy had the auth_pci drivers. some eee models do have different chipsets of the same cards. as on my first post my iso does have the acpi drivers so if you install eee_controle it should work.

i didnt try to include that being i prefer letting the bios handle stuff like fan speeds and temps. wifi is the biggest battery eater anyways and with the hotkeys working you can turn wifi off.

as for the cpu scaling i believe the eee does that in the bios itself. when in battery mode. not like a atom draws anything anyways.

also look at the post with the pets i used theirs one that does indeed do the cpu scaling but its still experimental and could smoke your pc. why i did not include it.

Nice one, Luther! I had previously installed Puppy 4.2 and added the wireless driver for my 900 but had problems adding the other Eee related stuff.
So Pupeee 4.2 it is, and it works like a dream! All I need now is FireFox 3...
Thank you very much for this.

I did get CPU scaling to work, and as long as you've got a temperature reading in your conky (modprobe thermal), you're safe. I even physically disconnected my fan for a while until Tempestuous figured out fan control (that guy is amazing).

I would love to do some FSB control on the fly, much like eeectl in xp. It's a tremendous battery saver, and since puppy bombs along in the eee even at 630mhz, I feel it could go much lower.

Here's hoping that somebody can figure out eee-control/puppy linux,
Jake

Hello, luther349

The best place to upload would be puppylinux.ca.

puppylinux.asia is often unaccesable.

I am planning to buy ASUS 1000+ because everyone is happy with it.

I would like to try Pupeee.

Thanks

Have you added the bug fixes for 4.2 like the abiword/downgrade/upgrade,lol The xsane fix, the current one in puppy won't work unless you have gimp installed and tiif5,which is actually tiff4beta3. also the blinky fix, and remax fix and a couple of others?

no its just a stock puppy iso with driver fixes. just like the original pupeee 3.01 someone else did. anything else you wanna put on it is up to you.

as for the eeepc buyer yea there great little computers. and with puppy linux or some other light distro even there slow ssd does not hurt its preference. they just fly with puppy linux.

being this release is unofficial being i did it myself i don't have access to the main mirrors to host it on. of course if someone does put it on there for me then woot lol.

Hey Carlomag that is good news - that is the model I have.
Previously used the excellent EeeTiger (with Compiz Fusion)
which supported the custom Intel Atheros wifi.
Good to hear this works.
I am stuck on an XP computer but it is getting too much and I may just have to Puppify it. When I get home will try this on my Eeepc

Thanks guys and hope you will provide a Pupee 5.xx for the Kennels

VPN for pupeee?

#20 Post by smoser »

Hi there,
First, many thanks for 4.2 -- it looks and runs great.

I have a recurring problem that I don't know what to do about:

Has anyone gotten a VPN established in on a pupeee box? I have looked around the puppy forums, and it seems to be a non-trivial issue (with MPPE support, etc.), and given the extremely helpful and ingenuitive puppeee/ eee users, I thought I'd ask here.

Specifically, I can connect via wireless to problem, but when I use gpptp to establish a VPN, i get an 'exited with code 0.' Talking to our network guys, it seems I start to make a connection, and then am immediately dropped.

Any pointers would be greatly apprecaited. thanks.
