[OPEN]PuppyPDF errors converting Word documents to pdf

This is for bugs in a version of Puppy 4.x that is still under development. If you have bugs for a released version of Puppy, please post them in the forum's main Bugs section, not here. Bugs are when a program does not function as intended. Usability issues are not bugs.

[OPEN]PuppyPDF errors converting Word documents to pdf

#1 Post by ecomoney »

I get the following bug when trying to convert a .doc file to pdf with PuppyPDF under the "document" menu. Under the help it seems that this program is tested under puppy 1.03 and above...is it working on 4.xx and above.

Word document (generic test document) included, along with screenie.

Same Problem

I'm just checking this now...it would appear that the script only works if no default printer is specified...will check out and get back to you...

Fixed

Yes the problem was twofold, what I thought about the default printer was true, but also the Abiword command line commands have changed somewhat lately...it would seem...anyway...keeping it simple have a look at this.

I'll fix the original and package the new one and post them both in the next few hours...got to eat. :)

Great work gposil! You have some skill there, and a willingness to apply it. One more nail in the coffin of the Micro$oft monopoly :D

I take that back!!!

The package that this is a replacement for gposil, is a different one from the one in which the bug was reported (PuppyPdf). they seem to do slightly different but similar jobs.

For your reference, the documents fail to convert properly (attached), and also in the version above, there is no notification when the conversion process is complete.

Updated to version 0.2 with completion message...see post.

.With regards to the problem you outlined, I couldn't replicates it in 4.1.2 or earlier, but 4.2 breaks it...more investigation of bugzilla at Abiword tells the real story...maybe we have to backport Abiword 2.6.3 to Puppy 4.2. It works...

I'm going to do some work on Abiword 2.6.8 to see if there is any improvement...although reading the bug reports at Abiword it still exhibits the problem of being unable to open Word documents created in OO and not handling rtf correctly...

We already have 2.6.3 in Puppy 4.2, Guy, but we are using the 2.6.6 plugins to gain access to clipart and symbols among other things. Perhaps that's the root cause of the issue?

That would be awesome. Any improvement is better than none. I think the issue for most is opening Word documents created in Word rather than OOO. Specifically the problem of getting .docx format to open, or any .doc format that uses Windows proprietary fonts. Maybe we need to package the Liberation fonts to overcome that. We certainly can't supply the proprietary Windows fonts in the build.

Good work Guy

Ability to open M$ word .doc's/OO .doc's at this moment in time is more important than having .docx capability at this time IMHO. .docx's are very rare in the wild.

I can confirm that with the Liberation fonts installed, the document you posted opens correctly in Abiword and doc2pdf works...please try and let me know if it works for you and if so this may clear up a large annoyance.

Oh BTW continuing on my investigation of docx with Abiword...a few discoveries that maybe of interest.
1.) rename a .docx to .zip and open it....wow what a schamozzle, no wonder M$'s own docx to doc converter is so enormous.
2.) The openoffice converter is 7mb by itself and only converts to odt3 which abiword 2.6.3 cannot read.

So still looking into it.....

I had a bit of a job finding sample .docx files, I finally found these two Ive uploaded here on file hosting services

http://www.ecomoney.eu/puppy/misc

When they open they appear garbled, and both files give the what seems to be the same result....sorry

They do open in abiword automatically though :)
