just had a go at trying it - thanks woolfpup
(it might be the answer to problems I had with Puppy4.0)
. . . and so far didn't have much luck
when trying to run from live cd, got the message:
Code: | Performing a 'switch_root' to the layered filesystem. . .
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! |
I have checked md5sum before burning (was fine) and now I will try to burn the cd again, but something tells me that I might have another problem
ps what is the lock icon you mention? please

And after all this I just realised that I should have chosen G-Pup rather than this version because of my desire for SMP support
This is called having senior moment
over and out and switching to G-Pup

As to pup_save not being created at shutdown, I suspect it is hard disk-drive-dependent. I say this because I've used one PC board with two hard disks: one prompts for saving at shutdown and the other doesn't (the newer drive doesn't). So some smart hard drives must be telling "no drive" signal to Puppy's event manager. |
Not using frugal install. Full instalation here!
I just want a mozilla based browser that install on barebones without dependencies errors.
Standard Puppy runs well here but I don't need everything, just the base (barebones) and the programs I need.

The dependencies that firefox lists are for gnome that puppy doesnt have.
firefox 3xx - here.
firefox bundle java + flash - here

Thanks for the tips but i'll stay with Firepup. The dependencies errors were solved and it works great on my HW. So far so good!

This looks like what I have been loking for for a very old pc ive aquired.
But I dont quite understand what exactly is in it.
Is it puppy 4.1.2 but without any programs other than puppy specific stuff(ie. network and package manager etc)?
Or are some of the other applications left in?
Thanks,
James

Presently happily browsing with Puppy 412 on the Compaq but the Dell is much more prone to crashing. I'm wondering if the bare bones puplet on Dell would crash less by virtue of having less in its (smaller) ram? I may be getting confused with frugal. Bare Bones = Frugal or is frugal just a way of installing to the hard drive? Can someone end my confusion on this.
I only need Geany and a reasonable browser (SM is ok). [I tried Abiword but it seemed buggy and for first draft, Geany is fine - Bare Bones has it?.] The crashing seems to be caused by just opening too many flash heavy pages, i think. Then again all the above posts seem to indicate there are issues with Bare Bones that would drive this noob nuts, or have all those problems been fixed???
So....., is Bare Bones the best bet for my needs?
Then again, 4.2 is coming along soon. Better to wait for that??? 4.2 More stable? Ttuuxxx thought so on another thread. Hmmm. 4.2 Bare bones coming too?
- Not enough time to experiment with all this stuff especially as i have to be careful not to lose work, bookmarks, addresses, etc. & the printer setup is exceedingly difficult for this noob (doubt i would install on bare bones-Dell since compiling is needed so its "easier" to share the file / print from Compaq). Very grateful for any thoughts on this stuff- hope it wasn't too many q's!
Cheers.

Wolf Pup, did you remove the ability to add sfs files at bootup? I have added two .sfs files but the Bootmanager Configure Bootup says they are not there. Any ideas?

For some reason this comes up with a username/password prompt:
''' A username and password are being requested by http://puppylinux.asia. The site says: "/puppylinux.asia/tpp" '''
Am I missing something obvious or is this a problem?

Duh. Went to the parent page and found it.
For some reason the BareBones puppy image is in the bugs area.
