Installing browsers Opera and Firefox in barebones Puppy |
|
The latest Opera package is 7.54 on ibiblio.org. Are there any plans to make and upload an Opera 8.0 package?
I would like a puppy with Opera and preferably Firefox as well. If I download 'unleashed bare bones 1.0.3' would there be any advantage in
getting the browsers from ibiblio.org compared to Opera.com (and mozilla)?

Sorry, I'm thinking of downloading Puppy "bare bones" version 1.0.3 not unleashed.

I downloaded the barebones 1.03 and the full version, and installed Opera 8.0 from the tar.gz file I downloaded from the opera site. I had no dramas at all, and I actually like 8.0 better than 7.54, which doesn't seem to be the consensus

thoughtjourney,
Which of the static distributions did you select?

Hey zygo,
on this page
http://www.opera.com/download/
there is a drop down list to choose a file format native to a particular distro. Underneath, there is a checkbox with the label
| Quote: | | Download this package in TAR.GZ format instead of your distribution's native format |
tick that, then press download. The file name should be something like
opera-8.0-20050415.5-shared-qt.i386-en.tar.gz
the numbers in the middle may be different, though.
download it to /root/my-applications/bin
open rxvt, and type
| Code: | tar -zxvf opera-8.0-20050415.5-shared-qt.i386-en.tar.gz (or your actual filename)
cd opera<version>
./install.sh |
Answer yes to the questions, and you should be right to go. Type opera at the command line. I usually set up an icon on the desktop: rox makes that pretty easy.
Hope I haven't gone overboard with the instructions. Opera is cool - I love it[/code]

Thanks thoughtjourney. I've got Puppy 1.0.3 Opera8.01 working with live cd and ntfs. Sadly an error comes up when Opera is started:
a window pops up saying-
Could not start plug-in executable 'operamotifwrapper'. /usr/lib/opera/plugins/operamotifwrapper-3
Please install Motif.
(The file mentioned does exists) and on the command line-
test: error while loading shared libraries: libjvm.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Also I can't get Opera to work without a hard disk! Installation throws up no error but the program won't start.
Still, my favourite browser (even without plugins) and Puppy is magic. I'm looking forward to frame buffer support in 1.0.4.

If you download the PupGet Opera package from ibiblio.org, expand it, you will find inside that it has the Motif library files -- in /usr/lib probably.
Just grab those.
The Motif library is needed by Opera for loading plugins -- see my comments on that by doing a search on "motif" in the Puppy News page!
