Claws Mail 3.7.0

#1 Post by shankargopal »

Claws-Mail is a fork of the sylpheed project, and is a lightweight, very fast and powerful email client. It does not have all the bells and whistles of Thunderbird and Seamonkey, but gives you a lot more control, and also is much better for low memory or slower environments.

This is Claws-Mail 3.7.0 compiled for Puppy 4.1 (should work with 4.0, will not work with 3.x or lower). I have not compiled in aspell support - if you need support for aspell, try tempestuous' compilation of Claws-Mail 3.5.0 here. The other compile options are pasted in below from the configure script's output.

Note that this version doesn't have SSL support - I believe tempestuous' compile doesn't either (though I might well be wrong). I hope to compile gnuTLS one of these days and will then post a bigger version with SSL support.

Please install libetpan-0.57 first and then the Claws Mail pet later. This version of Claws needs the latest libetpan (namely 0.57).

You can get both dotpets at these links:

Thank Shankar,

I believe WoDo might put this in 4.2 :)
Many people on Dial up may still be using offline web mail. I switched to online when I noticed everyone (except me was using such a system (gmail in my case)
Such online systems strip out a great deal of spam. I am intrigued what methods are being used by Linux offline email clients for spam filtering?

Thanks Lobster. Being a fan of Claws Mail I think it would be great in 4.2. But the packages I've made are a little big - the claws mail one is around 4 MB - but that's probably because I didn't strip out anything (no time) just compiled the vanilla source tarball.

If we are including it in 4.2 then possibly mairix (only 57K, posted here) could also be included since it works well with Claws? It's very fast and also flexible about the searches it takes, and even the indexing database is not large (in my case, as said around 5000 messages taking up 700 MB; database is 5.5 megs). For people who use offline email, like you used to and I still do :), it's a boon. It only takes a few minutes to set up the config file.

As for spam, don't know, I haven't used filters much either in my clients or in my web mail... but should be possible to set up bogofilter with Claws, which ought to be better, I think, then the built-in filtering in Thunderbird / Seamonkey.

could't find Claws Mail

I would like to download the pets but got a 550 Alert (no such file...). Where else can I download Claws 3.7.0 or 3.7.1 as a pet for puppy 4.12?

Thanks for reading

Yes, that server no longer seems to be hosting Puppy files. You can get them here:

Hi Shankar,
thanks a lot for making available claws 3.7.0 from the new download host. Btw: 3.7.1 is out. Do you think you will make a 3.7.1 pet in near future?

Sorry to not respond to you earlier - it's been a crazy week :). I haven't yet seen 3.7.1 but may make a dotpet if I get the chance. Is there any significant change though? I usually like to wait till a major version change before compiling again...

I asked about yr intention if u think to make a 3.7.1 Puppy Version in the near future. The reason I asked was that a lot of plugins for claws work only with the 3.7.1 Version as u can see at the homepage of claws:

http://www.claws-mail.org/plugins.php?branch=STD

have a nice day...

Sorry, I'm no longer a Puppy user - switched to Debian Squeeze more than a year ago for other reasons. I'm still a Puppy lover, though, and keep Wary as an occasional backup system. But can't compile stuff for Puppy readily any more.
