Hi Been that udf look good on paper, buttttttttttt it hasn't been updated since 2006, buttttttt I gave it a shot, first I had to update coreutils-7.4.tar.gz since for what it was asking for as been now changed to coreutils and because of that it wouldn't recognize it, grrr so I hacked the sources and omitted that check, which worked butttttttt as you work with the script it builds on the kernel, but the kernel is too new,lol So in a nutshell no can do. maybe on puppy series 1.

Well guys here's a sad note, It can't be done, I finally figured out that you can't edit a squash sfs series 2 file on series 4, so I downloaded 2.14R and made the pup_sfs file, that worked, to a point, XServer fails, Must be too much of the back end is updated and that xserver would have to be recompiled. Which I can't find barry's sources for that model, and I think I would be grasping at straws. So I'm going to abandon updating 2.15ce
Yes it was 2.15ce I had the iso 10+MB smaller with updated software, like the latest Seamonkey suite, I even had the latest Geany,Gparted,leafpad and the only extra application I installed was a full working latest Gimp and it was still 10MB smalller.
Butttt I started looking at 2.14R and guess what? That one I'll work on, lol Just a bit smarter this time, instead of updating over 40 packages at once and crossing my fingers, I'll do less this time, and not so radical, I managed to reuse the latest Seamonkey on it, I just had to update Glib due to the latest version I compiled because it needed gio. But it works just fine
2.14R now thats a interesting release and better base than 2.15ce the reason? well Xorg works on my LCD where as 2.15ce I had to use vesa at 10fps!!, and was really slow, plus my sata dvd burner boots using it:) Unlike 2.15ce I had to use a IDE dvdburner, because it wouldn't boot with sata.
So probably better to start fresh using 2,14r, grrrrrrrr what a waste of compiling and messing around time. Oh well you learn a bit as you go.

yes but the thing I've always disliked about 2.14r is that they messed around with the menus and it can't take things like icewm to work, I've spent hours trying to fix that mess up.Its not just related to etc/xdg or even the root menu, I replaced both areas with original 2.14 ones and still it doesn't work, fixmenus complains about missing things, once I get past this hurdle it should be smooth sailing. Well I hope so

Well I have the menus working right, but jwm displays a red border around the atcive screen, Thats not bad, I'm almost there
I had to replace the xdg menu/apps from a pet package found at the repo.

No problem Beem, Hey remember the old error message from series 2???
"however there is not enough room to uncompress and install it.
The free space is 25348 blocks but it is estimated you will
need 37720 blocks temporarily for the expansion and install. "
when I have 2 gigs of memory left, lol well here's the thing, It peeves me off to see this, I was trying to install my 2.14_devx.pet to compile live and yes I got that message, and then I remebered there were unsafe fixes for, but Thats not a good idea, what is a good idea is using the package manager from series 4 that had no issues at all
So thats what I did, I hacked in series 4 package manager, which is a completely different program, the old one was one file, series 4 is about 10 files in 4 directories, lol I had to track that down, Here's the good news, when I managed to getit all together and tried installing the devx again, it worked hows that ? I'm not goint to include the package list for series 3&4 due to the fact it could cripple the system.
Actually I'll try to remove the options to be on the safe side.

Here's what series 4 package manager on series 2 looks like after I removed the 3&4 repo, and the bottons on the side to sort them, It wasn't working anyways, and I moved the cancel button to the bottom, to try to shrink the overall size, I might also remove "Category,Dep.Size" listing also to reduce it some, and maybe the "Install/Uninstall" text, that takes about 3 lines.

Scrap that last one, this is the final for the package manager, man did I go to town on it:)
Basically for Upup I made a tabbed package manager gui just for the main screen, well I adapted it to work on series 2, I still have to change the icons a bit but this is just to show you.
Then I took apart the package manager and spilt it into 2 scripts, one to install, and one to unintall, Plus it can be easily localized.
now its 3 windows but can fit on any pc monitor like eeepc etc, which always had a issue with this non shrinking window manager
Please tell me what you think

Well yes I remember well the not enough space issue and people getting gray hair or even pulling out their hair.
Now for the upup tabbed Package Manager, didn't I report it didn't work in 463 in the thread about Jaunty packages?

Yes the that was a issue with the default package manager in jpup also but I think barry has fixed that, there aren't any issues with this one:)

Here's a interesting thing, I noticed that 2.14r didn't have CUPS, then I tried to compile it before I compile GTK, and guess what, it had buffer overflows, now this isn't good for the compiler, basically it means that the compiler needs patching, so I downloaded the latest gcc3.4 and patched it for overflows and the retried Cups and guess what? It compiled without error, big difference in the results, but when I tries Cups I had a error ,grrrrrrrrrrr symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libcups.so.2: undefined symbol: __guard
Well I'm not going to waste a year on cups, but I'll try a bit longer.

Good news I managed to get cups to compile, it didn't work right before the first time because I was using a gcc patch, but I guess you only need it on the compiler, so once I dropped it, it ran
plus its very snappy, just remember this is just a start for cups, which is like 5 packages, but this is the main part, It compiled better than any others I've done, so I'm very happy, now for gtk, grrr
