The graphics resolution of 1440x900 is fine on my 3 PCs (slightly irratating vertical artifacts on SIS mobo graphics) - despite the warnings!

However, on my wretched Toshiba L350-170 laptop I'm offered only 1440x900 16/24 bit - which would be correct - but 3.0.1 only actually gives me 1024x768 (yet xorg.conf shows 1440x900!).

But 4.2 just displays gibberish.

I'll swear that it did work once (at 1024x768) when the machine was "pristine" prior to re-installation of Vista but surely that - or the hopelessly neutered InsydeH2O bios - can't get in the way of a live CD or usb stick (which has to loaded as a non-existent floppy!)?

Sounds like you've got the same problem as me. I've got a Toshiba L300 R00 and it's all scrambled in 4.2 and 4.1x. The only solution I've been offered is Wow's most recent puplet as it it comes with the latest Intel drivers. It's very cutting edge. Displays my resolution perfectly, seems to be more sharper and also offers DRI. Hope that helps. Smile

Yes, Wow does indeed give me perfect resolution on the laptap - except that, when I shutdown/reboot it the screen flashes blue/grey with gibberish scrolling along the top and I have to hard shutdown!

On my other machines..

#1 SIS mobo graphics. Incorrect resolution of 1280x1024 (but no artifacts) and no bottom panel.

#2 ATI graphics card. Correct resolution but no top panel and no Conky but at least they could be restored.

#3 nVidea graphics card. Incorrect resolution of 1280x1024 and no bottom panel.

Sigh....!

[PS is there a Wow specific area to which I could make further comments?]

Not sure.

I had to follow a seemingly convoluted series of links to get to it - starting with the link given in your first post! (When the desktop first fires up it asks me to choose Shiney or Simple. Is that a clue?)

Is there anyway I can tell from the distro?

Anyway I shall persevere as I like its looks too (despite some unpredicable behaviour)...

the recommended is 1.1.
The "inofficial" was just to test a newer Kernel (2.6.29.1). It had no advantages (in contrast, ATI drivers work less good), so we stay with 2.6.28.5 at moment, as we have several good working drivers for it.

The "older" one (1.0) uses Kernel 2.6.27.5, and should no longer be used, as the drivers for it are outdated.

You can see the kernelversion in the conky systemmonitor on the right side.
It shall show Kernel 2.6.28.5.

You also can see the kernelversion by typing:
uname -r

Note, that for newer intel chips, you need to install my updated drivers (for K 2.6.28.5):
