gerryggg & dejan55, thanks for testing. The problem is with me. I am using NewYearsPup which works great for me in most circumstances but it does not seem to have libxine and possibly others; so I will have to do some configuration to take advantage of Amarok--I'll let you know if I get it working right. thanks again for preparing it.

Ah it must be missing libraries then, try installing libogg and flac:
libogg-1.1.3.pet
flac-1.2.1.pet

I just downloaded the Amarok_410.sfs-file. Placed it where my other sfs-file are, OpenOffice and K3b!

But when I go to the Bootmanager and choose which sfs-files that will be loaded at startup, I can't see the Amarok-file! Why?

thoase, try renaming it to match your puppy version, e.g. Amarok_420.sfs if you use puppy 4.2. I don't really use sfs's much so maybe someone else will know different solution.

Amarok won't start

#26 Post by Dromeno »

I have Amarok not working for another reason. When I click on the SFS

and then open

/mnt/+mnt+sdc1+Rene+Software+PuppyLinux+SFS+amarok_410.sfs/usr/bin/amarok

I get this msg:

Amarok could not be started!
This may be because the amarokapp binary is not in your PATH
Try locating and running amarokapp from a terminal

...but when I do run the app from the terminal the same msg comes up.

What can I do to make it run now?

Dromeno, you can't just mount SFS, if you have frugal install copy SFS to /mnt/home then reboot and it should be loaded, also rename it to match your puppy version (if you use puppy4.2 rename to amarok_420.sfs), if you have full hd install, you'll have to copy files from sfs to your system. Post your puppy version and installation type, then we'll see...

Still not in y path after renaming

#28 Post by Dromeno »

I am using the acer-puppy-410-27.iso, I created a bootable thumbbdrive (Corsair Nano 4GB) with the Windows version of Unetbootin.

I put the Amarok.sfs in the root of the thumbdrive, renamed it to Amarok_410.sfs

then booted from the thumbdrive. MSI machine, AsusEEE machine, Belinea machine.

All produce the same error msg - Amarok not in my PATH.

so what should the next step be?

OK, but you don't click on SFS to mount it, put it in /mnt/home and then after reboot just type amarok in terminal, do not go to /mnt/whatever to run it

some libs must be striped from that puplet that amarok needs, type

Code: Select all

ldd /usr/bin/amarokapp | grep "not found"
then paste output

Hmm, probably, they might be few more dependencies maybe but not many.

'clickable' Amarok SFS?

#34 Post by Dromeno »

Is it possible / is someone willing to make an Amarok.SFS which is 'clickable', so it can be put on a thumbdrive and left-clicked when needed so you do not need to install&reboot puppy?

From my understanding that is not the way .sfs files work.

Milkdrop in Amarok?

#36 Post by Dromeno »

Pity that 'cliockable' is no option for most SFS files... I guess i was just lucky with the songbird sfs (that one mounts when clicked and then you can use the program immediately)

But anyway: I have found that the amarok SFS works right out of the box (when installed) in Pupeee42. The problems show up in acerpup 4.10 - well it was about time to upgrade to 4.20 anyway :)

The big advantage of amarok over songbird is that it also plays wma files.

Now the next step I would love to have to help with is to make the beautiful Milkdrop visualization (best known from Winamp) work in the puppy Amarok. At the moment only Gentoo and Ubuntu versions exist but there seems to be a way to make one for other Linux distro's as well, see:

http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/ProjectM_HowTo

Is there anybody who can make a pet of this?

Wondering if anyone else if having problems with Amarok/libgpod messing up their database files.
Ipod Nano 3rd Gen
PuppyLinux 4.2.1 / Full Install
1st issue:
I didn't specify iPod model - results with the /iPod_Control/iTunes/iTunesDB file being corrupted. To see the same library after using Amarok, I copied iTunesDB to another folder before using Amarok, then copied back after Amarok.
2nd issue:
I specified iPod model, without FWID - results with iTunesDB remaining intact, but the /iPod_Control/Artwork/* is wiped. Again, I worked around this by copying the complete directory before and after.
3rd issue:
I specified the FWID by manually editing /Device/SysInfo (as stated here); results with the artwork files remaining, but the ArtworkDB had to be copied before and after using Amarok.

I'd like to have the capability to use Amarok for more than just a player for the iPod. And I'd most definitely appreciate not having to copy the DB file before and after every use of Amarok.

Doing some net searches, this seems to have been a common problem solved by libgpod v3

The only things I've added to the original install have been Amarok and gtkpod.
Ok, so I filed searched for libgpod and found the dreaded libgpod3-nogtk

/root/.packages/libgpod-0.6.0.files
/usr/lib/libgpod.so.3
/usr/lib/libgpod.so.3.0.0
/usr/share/doc/libgpod3-nogtk
/usr/share/lintian/overrides/libgpod3-nogtk

Is anyone else encountering the same issue?
Does anyone have a suggestion?

EDIT:
I did two things, one (or both) resolved the issue.
1. I copied the SysInfo file and renamed it to SysInfoExtended.
2. Since I intalled Amarok after gtkpod/libgpod, I unintalled/reinstalled libgpod pet ( /usr/share/doc/libgpod3-nogtk still shows in Pfind results, but is not really there... not sure if it was really there the first time I listed it above. The insignificant text file /overrides/libgpod3-nogtk is still there.)

Anyway, artwork remains intact on the iPod after disconnecting now :)

If anyone using icewm had problems with amarok disapearing instead showing icon in icewm system tray, here's a way to hack it, add this lines to /root/.icewm/winoptions :

amarokapp.Amarokapp.dClose: 0
amarokapp.Amarokapp.fClose: 0
amarokapp.Amarokapp.dSysMenu: 0
amarokapp.Amarokapp.dTitleBar: 1
amarokapp.Amarokapp.tray: Exclusive
amarokapp.Amarokapp.icon: amarok

Restart icewm and then when you run amarok again it will show on desktop first and it will minimize to tray, also you might need to make icon named amarok.xpm and add it to /usr/local/lib/X11/mini-icons

Or save this one that I attach :)

I was installing a PCLOS for someone on their desktop this last week and thought, "Yeah, I miss Amarok; easily the best music player out there..."

Then, once again, you the man, dejan! 8)

I don't have all that much music on the old laptop (maybe a gig) but it would be fun to have the choice for amarok if I wanted...now I do.

...I'm downloading the sfs as we speak...well done!
