TEENpup 2009 Legacy available for Download

#1 Post by john biles »

Hello Everyone,
Release Notes for TEENpup 2009 Legacy: Today sees the fifth release of TEENpup and once again it’s still based on Puppy 2.14 Why? Well mainly a lot of old Hardware just seems to work with Puppy 2.14. This time the iso has grown to just under 700MB’s so that it will fit on a CD. As the focus for TEENpup has shifted to a Modern Operating System for older PC’s which most likely only came with a CD Drive, it was felt that a 700MB size limit should be adhere to.

Also to attract users from Windows TEENpup default color scheme has been modeled on some of Vista’s coloring. Also the way the menu Applications are worded might seem too simplistic for the average Linux User. It was felt that to win over new users; TEENpup’s Applications had to be as easy to access as was possible. To someone new to Linux and coming across for example Applications called GIMP, ROX , GAMBAS, KAFFEINE to name a few, might be put off even opening them and it was felt that what an Application did was more important than its name.

So this now leads me to some of the Applications included in this release. It was felt that Open Office should be included with its Help Manual as well as being the latest version at time of release ( 3.1 ) as a large number of users, use a PC for Writing, Spreadsheets and Presentations and anything less wouldn’t do. KDE’s similar Office Applications have been removed. A number of new KDE Applications have been added. Also Pdrive’s USB auto mount daemon has been turned on by default, detecting most USB devices that are plugged in. A lot of time has been spent fine tuning little details that make it easier for the average user to use TEENpup. Example: Seamonkey will recognize most common attachments in emails and open them when you click on them. No more searching through “bin

Hats off to you Sir, Mr Biles.

You bloody ripper. I'm a HUGE fan of your work - while I dabble with heaps of Puppy3 and Puppy4 puplets, and even have a few attempts at constructing my own - all roads lead back to TeenPup, as they say. If they don't, they should. TeenPup2008 was the clincher for me to seriously consider leaving the world of Windows, and now that I have a little experience in remastering Puppy etc, your projects stand out as Gold Standard constructions. I post little, but lurk lots - and I know there are teeming masses of us who are like-minded regarding your consumate expertise and consideration. Bit like Teenie groupies, embarrassingly...

Here's to a Very Happy 2009 Legacy.
Thank You

Hi John

Fantastic stuff - you have really done this well - luv the Tips and the little dog.

Auto set-up for mouse and internet - brilliant.

And use >> to auto-hide the task bar - nice.

Beautifully done - this is a keeper for sure.

Very best regards - Ray

:)
A LOT of work has gone into this and the praise is well deserved.
Best Puplet I have seen in a while.

Looks good, comprehensive programs - all seem working . . .
:)

So bear that in mind whist I mention my experiences.
first of all I am using an Athlon 64 Dual core 5000 mhz
- so I am really suited to a later kernel and puplet

When I tried to load my default xorg settings I got the message

Code: Select all

dc= stack underflow
and had to use xvesa
but eventually managed to get 1024 x 768 res in xorg (only one step down from my preferred res)

My inbuilt ethernet connection was not recognised
so I could not get online - tried a few things but no luck - may try an older machine in a moment . . .

No sound.

I like the care and attention to detail
The range of programs
and the layout is simple and straightforward
.
I feel the use of conky, of which I am a reluctant but growing fan, is better than the default in 4.2.1 (which is very good)

Barry has been updating the two series and I wonder if combined with
Teenpup (using the Teenpupsave.sfs, with the yet to be released 2.18 ) will be possible?

If anyone can mirror this and perhaps split into pieces for modem download, that would be welcome.

Another thing - John did mention that he was uploading this
and were was his wiki page a couple of days back

Well the Puppy wiki is being updated/scripted by Raffy and Pritish
and if we have a fan of Teenpup that is able to provide a web or
wiki page that would be a great contribution

I like Teenpup a lot
It still feels like Puppy but with a great deal of simple functionality added.
I feel like a teen (but enough of my personal life)

I'd really like to try out TEENpup, but the 1st boot halts part way.

Here's my thread on the problem.

Is 256MB RAM plus a 512MB Linux swap partition not enough?
Or doesn't it support a PCI to IDE RAID controller card?

Mine won't finish booting either, I forgot the error, but it's a common error that halts booting. I could try again and write it down.

Edit: "Cannot find Puppy on 'ideCD' boot media" :(

Hello cthisbear,
Thank you for downloading from Softpedia. This confirms that the iso is ok.

To Sylvander and markofkane, I'm sorry to hear that TEENpup isn't booting for you. Basically when you remove all my stuff it's still Puppy 2.14 so if you've had problems booting Puppy 2.14 then the same problems will arise with TEENpup.
Basically I have access to 7 different spec PC's and TEENpup boots up fine on all of them. I guess TEENpup can't be compatible with all the Hardware out there. :(

So I guess the problem is the PCI to IDE SCSI RAID controller card.

I've had problems before with older Puppies being unable to see the HDD due to the controller being unsupported .

The smaller [older] Puppies manage to boot OK...
I guess because they can get bye with that amount of RAM and no Linux swap partition.

Whereas I guess the TEENpup RAMdrive is too big to go in the available RAM, so it needs a swap partition in use, but it cannot see the HDD, so cannot use the swap partition.

Any agreement on that? :)

Any way of by-passing that problem?
Make a swap partition on a USB drive?
Flash Drive or HDD?

Perhaps not worth doing if I cannot use the internal HDD. :(

Good job John.

How come you used Skype 1 instead of 2?

Wouldn't version 2 work?

Regards

Hello smokey01,
Your correct Skype 2 doesn't work with TEENpup's older Puppy series 2 base.
My wife 2 complains about not being able to use her webcam, but still chats on Skype 1 with friends and family because Windows takes toooo..... Looong..... to load up.

Good job, although it won't work on my desktop. I think it will work on my laptop, though. 8)

Booting teenpup 2009

I also have a Boot error, I believe it maybe SATA Raid Controller (it is raid off /normal mode). It does a search of the drives then either reports can not find idecd, or idehd when booting via gldr.

Is there a parameter to pass? or is it that I have too new a hardware for the kernel ? 214R does work as well as the 214X (ttuuxx) is working.

Thanks, it could just be the onset of a senior moment.

Hi John,

FYI I've got 2009legacy running on my 10yr old amd k6-3 400 with 256 ram. I did not make a cd but extracted the 2009 files and replaced the 2008 files and deleted old save file in my frugal installation and used my original grub to bootup. On first boot could not get a destop with xorg and xversa was very grainy. However after creating a new save file and rebooting xversa is now working. I will try xorg some more later as it has always worked with other puppies.

Everything looks great now and seems to run faster than 2008 did on this machine.

Thank you for a great os for old hardware.
Dale

What is the version of Seamonkey? Does TEENpup 2009 Legacy have enhanced modem detection and support?

EDIT: Seamonkey 1.1.14, no PupDial

Broadcom still a problem?

#18 Post by Boomerian »

Hi John,
Looks like you've got a winner - I will try it on my Celeron 400MHZ with 256MB RAM. The only distro that works with this Linksys WMP54G adapter is Dreamlinux, which I enjoy, but I am convinced Puppy will maximize the capability of this old box. I will download and burn the ISO and give it a try.
Thanks for all your work - I'll let you know how it goes. The screen shots look terrific!
