Installing HP Deskjet 690c

#1 Post by nyshiro »

Hallo,
Could anybody explain to me STEP by STEP how I can install this printer.
I'm allready trying this to do for 2 days without any luck.
This is because i'm a new linux user and i don't really understand what i'm doing.
I'm using Puppy 4.2.1
- I have Loaded a pet package hpijs-2.8.4
and hpijs-2-8.2_static-1-patched421
- The printer is attached to the parallel port.

I'm trying to use http://localhost:631/admin to add the printer but don't know what the device URI is and how the interface works.

Will anyone please help. I don't see the logical steps in the procedure.
I would be glad anyone can help me urther.

Thanks ahead.

Reboot Puppy with your printer turned ON.

Run the CUPS web interface and start adding a printer.

When you get to the Device screen, pull down the list. Your printer may already be listed as connected to LPT#1. This is your parallel port.

If it is not, select LPT#1 from this screen.

On the next screen, you will select the Make of the printer. Choose HP.

On the next screen, you will select the Model/Driver. You may have more than one entry for your 690C. Pick any one.

Print a test page.

I ran Cups and went to the device menu.
My printer is not assigned and there is NO lpt#1 device NOR a paralell port in de list of devices.
The list shows 9 options :
The first : APPSocket/HP Jetdirect and the last Windows printer via Samba.
I don't know how to select or to load the driver for this printer, but NO lpt#1 or paralell port.

Thanks again

Go to a console and type:

Code: Select all

lsmod
Are there any items in the list like "parport" or "lp"?

If you go into the machine's BIOS settings, is the parallel port enabled?

Thanks for helping me out as far.

In de Bios the preferences are:
- Onboard parallel Port = 378h (so it is enabled)
Mode = ECP
IRQ = 7
DMA Channel = 3

The lsmod keyin doesn't have any parport or LP information.

Some extra information
- I was working with an HDD installed Puppy when I first announced the
problem. For some reason my Seamonkey doesn't start anymore.
- At this moment i'm working with the Live-CD. I hope it doesn't differ from the HDD instal for the printer.

Greetings

It looks like Puppy is not detecting your parallel printer port, which it should do automatically. Go to a console and type:

Code: Select all

modprobe parport
modprobe lp
modprobe parport_pc
Then run CUPS and see if LPT#1 is detected.
