File System (theory and practice)

#1 Post by Lobster »

Fellow Puppys,

I am trying to understand something.
The Linux file system - mind you the XP file system is equally esoteric.

This is what the Puppy seems like to me (and I appreciate it is not typical of Linux but shares most elements):

In Puppy we can read from anything
but only write to files in /usr and /root

When you open rox some attempt of

My-documents
My-Roxapps
etc allows some familiarity
but let us say I want to find a program
- it could be anywhere
icons too I find all over the place

Now (terrible person that I am) hearing why or how or what is the Linux file system is of no interest. What I would like to hear is stategies such as GOBO Linux introduced, or a central catalogue of all files and their locations . . . can that be implemented? Is it important?

Otherwise my head might explode (not a good thing)
I know Barry introduced some sort of new method of storing files (or did I imagine that) because the purging of alien files is now possible . . .

Any clarity welcome and hey - did you notice we have new dotpups for searching - plus that new gtkFind in 1.0.3 :)

How to browse Puppy's files with Mozilla

#2 Post by Ian »

If you open Mozilla and type / in the URL field at the top you will be able to browse the whole file system of Puppy in a more familiar fashion.

File System (theory and practice)

#4 Post by jt »

I have been asking the same thing for some time now. So now I find the perfect -- and simple -- solution to my file search problems.

Thank you.

Hail Puppy!
