My site (that I never seem to have time to finish building) is on Dreamhost right now. There was a deal for new users back around January where I got two years of the unlimited bandwidth/space plus my domain for $25 (instead of $200+). That's barely more than the cost of the domain, so I jumped on it despite the fact that I don't have a finished site.

So far it seems to be good hosting. I haven't done anything to stress test it though. One nice thing is that there's an easy Drupal installation method for the server. Thom is right about the CPU/RAM usage though. I think you will have that problem with any host.

Does Hostgator provide some type of log to show you what script is eating up the CPU cycles? Even with the heavy usage the site gets, I just don't think there should be high CPU usage unless there is some runaway process.

I'm in the hosting business.....and when someone with an existing site wants to me with me, I ask a lot of questions....you really need to know:

How much bandwidth does you site use per month?
You need to realize that nothing is unmeasured. While a large number of hosting companies say "unlimited", virtaully all of them have some sort of cap.

What kind of scripts do you use? What amount of memory do they use?

The large number of places which low-cost hosting are based on shared hosting....all the sites draw upon all the memory....so it doesn't take more than one bandwidth/memory hog to slow down the entire server....and everyone suffers.

If you know your bandwidth use and the memory use, you can talk intelligently with a provider...and save yourself from the unpleasent surprize of having your site shut down.

Does you host "oversell"? Overselling is based on the fact that not all sites are consumimg maximum resources at all times...so, you can load more domains on a server by playing the odds. Of course if all the sites are active at the same time...the entire server suffers.

And now the good part:

If your host harbors spammers, sooner or later the server ip will end up in one or more databases. Some of the databases don't list single ip addresses....they list the entire block.....so if the spammer and you are in the same block...you suffer when the block containing the spammer gets in the database.

The answer is "yes" to both. Whodo posted the log here, while the runaway process is shown there as
whodo 2891 29.6% CPU 0.0 0 0 ? ZN 18:51 0:00 | \_ [php] <defunct>
Thanks to Prit1 for troubleshooting this for us all.

I'm going to paste this in the spam thread for JohnM/Flash/PG's attention, thanks

I've been saying it for a while - just doesn't seem to grab everyone, does it? :?

I sent them some tutorials about how to get firefox/openoffice going on Puppy, pretty good site and well designed too.

Glad to see the puppylinux.org and the wiki back up, its been a long haul without it.

After having spent an hour today getting a 53yo clients farm town working for them today, Im inclined to think that facebook actually "grows people down".

That is an interesting site Lobster, does Puppy Linux have a presence there yet? It ticks many boxes in terms of a social project...although that may not be immediately apparent sometimes

I missed that one. I figured the culprit would be PHP, but I was hoping the log would be more useful than that. I see 12 pages listed that could have the offending code, but it's also possible (maybe even likely) that the code causing the problem started running earlier than the incoming requests listed.

I don't really know much about Drupal, but I did some searching and found two pages where people were having similar issues. Some of the suggestions given to them may be of use.

I noticed a thread stating that Warren has left Puppy, how does this affect the website?

That's sad, but there will be a turnover, am sure.

From the several pages I have read on the web, I think a site with such a high traffic rate as ours cannot run Drupal and be on a Shared hosting. The main reason why we got suspended is CPU usage and not bandwidth or memory.

The main page of Puppylinux.org runs around 505 Sql queries just to show the page. Does this look economical? And this is for 1 visit. We have between 250,000 to 300,000 visitors every month. Just think of the load.

1 - With the ads, we are hoping to move to a virtual dedicated or even better to a dedicated server. If we get to the dedicated hosting, we won't have the CPU limits we are having now.

2 - Another option is to switch over the whole site into a much simpler one without using Drupal. This would require a reasonable amount of coding and testing. And we may lose the many features built into the site.

For right now, we are considering the first option.

Regarding Warren - This is definitely not a good news. IMO, If he leaves, then it would be a big loss to the community. I have been personally helped and encouraged by him several times. He was the main person behind the community website.

We can adapt the index page a bit and make it more static... I'm sure drupal guys will give us help.

Prihtish has been working on the coding. Tomb created the original Drupal site, Warren hosted and Coolpup did most of the editing and updating.

Tomb is now using Debian, Warren too has recently decided to call it a day.
There efforts and involvement have been considerable. 8)

From the private conversations I remember with Raffy and the others involved, I can say that Prihtish (Prit1) did mention the possibility of moving back to wakka wiki, using mediawiki, another CMS may also have been suggested. (apologies if my memory is faulty)

I fully support Prihtish in his suggestions (he is doing the work)
If anyone can provide a host or offer practical support you can discuss it here or 'Private Message' Prit1 or the other people involved, from this forum :)

That seems OK, and it'll be great. ¿We won't need to move our drupal-wiki content to the new wiki manually, will we?

Hey, I just got an idea.

How about making the main page static, and everything else dynamic?

That should be a relief for our hosting.

Moving to a non-drupal page seems ok, but we will lose our lovely design, the ISO's page, and all the info on the wiki...

THat's a bit too much to lose, right?

I can confirm that they seem to be dead. If you click on a link that does not use clean URLs (like on the links to a different comment page) it will work. That leads me to believe that either clean URLs have been screwed up by HostGator, or that some of the other pages have been deleted.

I was able to login and can see revisions and stuff, but these are all posts (PHP posts, not posts like to a forum) to the same page using dirty URLs (stuff with ?id=something after the page name). Of course, for all I know the site is actually just one page that makes itself look like many by using clean URLs and dynamic content. If that's the case, then it is obviously a problem with clean URLs. It could even be something as simple as Hostgator deleting our .htaccess file.

Who all has direct access to the server to check this out?

EDIT:
I'm now pretty certain it has to do with clean URLs getting turned off. If I manually type in http://www.puppylinux.org/?q=home/links instead of the clean URL given by the page http://www.puppylinux.org/home/links, it works fine. Same with http://www.puppylinux.org/?q=community instead of http://www.puppylinux.org/community.

Somebody with FTP/SFTP access would have to get in to fix it. Actually, Hostgator may may have to fix it depending on the privileges they give users.

htaccess

#79 Post by raffy »

Prit has been working on it and has renamed htaccess. (Sir Duncan's observation is correct.)

Prit's work is in connection with the move of the site to another host within the month (July).

Anyway, the links should be working again.

Thanks for the alert, guys. :)
