UPDATE: Fixed menu entry and icon issue.

Found InstantBird today, it worked so I packaged it up.

http://www.instantbird.com/

I don't know if the menu entry is working right but you can navigate to /usr/bin and drag and drop the instantbird link to the desktop to create a shortcut there. the icon is under /usr/local/X11/mini-icons/mozicon128.png

No, it's not appearing in the menu. The .desktop file should have:

Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=InstantBird Messenger
Icon=/usr/local/lib/X11/mini-icons/mozicon128.png
Comment=InstantBird Messenger
Exec=/usr/bin/instantbird
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=X-Internet
GenericName=InstantBird Messenger

Plus, the icon is installing to /usr/local/X11/mini-icons, not usr/local/lib/X11/mini-icons.

Lastly, on install, I'm getting a missing dependencies message for libnssutil3,so & libpurple.so. I'm not sure if these are critical, though, as the app starts OK.

It now shows in the menu, icon path fixed. Also, X-Internet didn't make it show in the menu. After looking at some other .desktop files I added FileTransfer to the InstantBird .desktop to make it show. Yes I know it's not a file transfer app but it works.

As for the dependencies, they are in the /opt/instantbird directory and the program looks for them there. The package manager complains I presume because they aren't in /usr/lib or something.

Odd that Categories=X-Internet didn't work for you...I just modified the .desktop file, as above, ran fixmenus, restarted jwm, and then it appeared, under Internet, in the menu.

Anyway, thankyou for porting it, fixing menu & icons, & explaining the libraries.

Nice program, altho with 24MB not small. (have not compared with Pidgin)
On my jaunty 476 PC, got the menu entry after fixmenus|rerstart jwm.
On my Jaunty 466 PC not. The .desktop was there however, but the categories= was empty. I did put in the correct value and after fixmenus|restart jwm the entry was there also.

A pity that there is no indication of future plans on the web site and that there is no forum/newsgroup. I suppose all is done in IRC

What I am missing is an options menu and to see also the off line buddies/friends.

Don't know about file xfers.

I am in the process to install as much programs as possible outside the pup_save structure.
InstanBird is a good example of being able to do this.
I created a mnt/home/puppy/applications directory in which I put programs.
InstantBird was installed and it's in /opt. I moved the complete instandbird directory to my applications directory.
In /usr/bin there is a symlink to the instantbird start script. So I changes so it points now to the script in the applications/instandbird directory. Nothing was lost as of user configuration and menu entry.

It saved me some 26MB in my pup_save.
