Classic Pup 2.14X -- Updated 2 series
Hi, Sorry for not recent comments but I´m very busy this month...
I´ll add a very small contribution: the Updated Changelog file for Pup214X6, some changes between X5 y X6 were not added because they were bugs introduced between releases, and other small fixes are just in test phase. I also find X5 very unstable and shall wait for a more stable release to test, maybe X7.
There are no reports about Search Monkey crashes, I don´t know if just me but it crashes anytime I make a file search. I´ll prefer Pfind.

dave WB=welcome back
yes guys v6 is stable on my system, but those new errors with the installers just don't cut it with me, I'm just working on some icons for 4.16 and then I'll be back on 2.14X series, maybe in about another 12hrs or so I'll switch back.
8-Bit Questions about printing abiword, have you tried the new package yet 8-bit?http://www.ttuuxxx.gposil.com/2.14X/doc ... 6-214X.pet
I'm not going to install it by default until the package is well and truly tested, abiword is well known not to like puppy much. The abiword in 2,14X is probably from around 2006 so printing might not be as good as in the latest version. I have a feeling when we get close to final, we might spend a few releases on printing, lol man I wish they would come up with a ndiswrapper type app for printing and we could just toss Cups out the door. ttuuxxx

Ok, I gave it the benefit of trying the version of AbiWord and I got the same results as far as printer selection.
Print to LPR only.
Also, even when you select 'set as default printer' in setting up a printer, the Printer installation program stubbornly refuses to set it.
I manually went into the file to change the default printer to mine.
I also corrected the port settings.
But printing quality is very poor and I got better quality with CUPS as well as being able to select a specific printer in AbiWord.
When I run MicroXP in virtualbox, I get really good quality. So, is it the printer interface, or the driver?

Frugal a no go.
I tried different times last night.
Before I saw some of the posts above I actually copied
them into a different directory.
No cigar. Absolutely denied there were files.
Song player:
Stops and starts...ttuuxxx...Thank you.
Although this also needs the run action mp4 andavi??
I didn't try mpeg, wmv etc.
Burnt ISO to cdr/rw...just for a change.
Boots fine...would not eject.
Tried Xorg....yes it ejects....weird.
Overall ttuuxxx....pretty good effort.
Not criticism. I think I last tried v3??
I even like the Vdub.
Chris.

Sorry Chris V6 was a flop, it fixed a major error but a brought a bunch of new errors, I'll be reverting back one release and moving up from that one its the first real bug release i guess, I'm still happy to know that we might be able to fix that one big error.. With the other Xorgwizard that would be a great leap forward, I don't have any experience in boot or video config alterations so I'm winging it. But so far its been a bigger success than I figured and so I'll continue on, maybe try back in a release or 2cthisbear wrote:Frugal a no go.

Yes dave I'll keep it going even when Its stable for a release I'll revisit it, Kind of got attached to it Once its stable enough I would like to move into Dpup again Right now still working on the icons, I went from making just the all the menu icons in 416 to 24x24 to the whole lot of icons, what a job, like 219 or so, had to be resized, or changed, man talking about a job, lol I think I'm down to maybe 70 of them left, should be finished sometime tomorrow. Some of those icons I've never seen in a actual applications. Probably left over clutter from 1 series or something, I didn't play much with 1 series.

hi,
I did as suggested and edited /etc/puppyversion to 214R.
Got it into hard drive with universal installer.
Booted using grub.
title Puppy Linux 214R frugal (sda6)
rootnoverify (hd0,5)
kernel /vmlinuz pmedia=atahd
initrd (hd0,5)/initrd.gz also used initrd /initrd.gz
hung after busybox with usage init
init is the parent of all processes
Regards Tony

Tony,
I understand series 2 uses a slightly different grub stanza from series 4.
Suggest you try:
title Puppy Linux 214R frugal (sda6)
rootnoverify (hd0,5)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=idehd
initrd /initrd.gz
for a frugal install. But not sure where your vmlinuz, initrd, zdrv and sfs files are.
Give it a try and let us know if it doesn't work.
Cheers
Dave

Much as I like to rag you sometimes, you put
on a good show.
Kick back and relax, time off for good behavior.
Big deal if you had a dud.
Take a look at Mark Webber.
How many races...130????
and he finally comes out a winner.
How sweet that must have felt.
Keep on road testing mate.
Regards....Chris.

V6
Two days ago downloaded the ISO (always use PWGET for trouble
free downloads) and burned CD from MediaPup.
V6 is working well on my 13 Year old machine:
HOT-661/P Motherboard with upgraded BIOS
384 MB Ram
DSL Internet (AT&T) via eth0
PII 350 MHz
ESS Solo sound card
Xorg Video (1024X768 16 bit good)
The only recommendation at this point would be to replace
XWGET with PWGET (to copy and paste URL and browse for
folder to save file).
I'm very much impressed otherwise!

The frugal grub entry suggested by davesurrey should work if
a/ all files are on root, and
b/ the hd is ide
For more info and other setups read my posts on page 5 etc. Both 214R and 214x work with the grub entries I posted, tested on three pcs. All frugal installs done manually, have not tested the installer.

Hello vg1,
Yes you are quite correct, that's why I said to Tony
vmlinuz
initrd
zdrv
pup_214.sfs
pup_save
to a subdirectory /puppy214X
So (if you need this Tony) and your files are not all under root but in a subdirectory then my stanza is
title Puppy 214X frugal on hdb3
rootnoverify (hd1,2)
kernel /puppy214X/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=idehd psubdir=puppy214X
initrd /puppy214X/initrd.gz
and it works just fine co-existing with all the other version-4 Puppys.
Note also to Tony: if you have sata rather than pata drives then substitute:
satahd for idehd above.
vg1, I did ask on page 55
Do you have any other 2 series on your drive coexisting with 214X?
Cheers
Dave

I have my 214X frugal install on hdb3 along with several other Puppies and have manually moved:But not sure where your vmlinuz, initrd, zdrv and sfs files are.

Is it so other 2-series can co-exist on the same partition/drive or is it to do with faster booting?what is the purpose of all the extra comments in the stanza that MHHP uses and vg1 proposed?
Do you have any other 2 series on your drive coexisting with 214X?
Cheers

On frugal menu.lst stanza
Greetings!
FWIW: I can confirm that the simpler menu.lst-entries suggested by davesurrey works for my frugal 214X6 install. I do not know why I had to resort to the more elaborate menu.lst-entries suggested by vg1, as I posted above. Perhaps, when trying, I kept a parameter that was incompatible with 214X, perhaps I missed the capitalisation of PMEDIA (although, it seems to work fine now using small letters) .
About v6 being a flop;
Not in my case - after substituting xorgwizard with the latest from 416 - v6 flies like v4 did.
cheers/

Tux, as far as I'm concerned I'm happy with what you've done so far on this release. I downloaded V4 and it works well, I use it as an alternative to some of the 4.2 series Pups when I want one which picks up my partitions better (there's a problem with that in most of the 4 series).ttuuxxx wrote:Sorry Chris V6 was a flop, it fixed a major error but a brought a bunch of new errors, I'll be reverting back one release and moving up from that one its the first real bug release i guess, I'm still happy to know that we might be able to fix that one big error.. I posted a new link to V5 on Eric's server, In about 2 days time I should have V7 ready, so maybe give V5 a good workover and find out what is needed to be done, I'll also look into PWGET as requested Any other software changes needed? There hasn't been much reviews on the new abiword package I posted, hmmm does the general public not want an update of abiword? Makes my job easier also feel free to post any views, oh ya in V5 we had the new mut and pmount , does it list all your drives and in order? I can't do anything about overlapping text, that kind of code is beyond my skill, if anyone can fix it, I'm all ears.
