Ppup-417 Alpha bug reports

#1 Post by tronkel »

Barry's blog entry announcing Ppup-417 Alpha

Just burned a DVD multi-session using 417 Alpha.

Sequence of events:
1. DVD muti-session burned OK using Pburn in 416 Alpha
2. Booted OK from multisession DVD uding puppy pfix=ram
3. Added some test files to root and then saved the session
4. Session seemed to burn OK this time with no Rockridge error
5. Then tried to boot the saved multisession DVD
6. Reboot then froze with message that it couldn't find the ppup-471.sfs file
What has happened, is that in burning the saved session to DVD the Puppy boot files have been wiped/overwritten, leaving only multi-session stuff on the DVD - hence no boot.

So, the multi-session burn did work this time round, but there is something amiss now with how the burn is configured. So getting there but not quite there yet.

Will burn a CD multisession now and see if that works. Will get back later.

OK have tried 417 Alpha Multi-Session, but this time with a CD.

Can confirm that it burns the session and reboots OK.

DVD multisession does not work as per earlier post though.

using pup4-417-k2.6.30.1.iso :)

Menu / Multimedia / embedded bookmarks multimedia files
does not have an icon - the same program (but with different parameters) does have an icon under internet - do we need the program twice?
- ah - I did change the icon set to original so it may be missing only on that set

This is a multimedia player front end?

xorg screen display, no problems -straight in
connected to ethernet LAN no problems

Will see how I get on - so far good 8)

/usr/local/PuppyBrowser/PuppyBrowser.png 22kb<----128x128px way too big,
/usr/local/EmbeddedBookmarks/EmbeddedBookmarks.png 25kb <----128x128px way too big,
The Icon pack I'm making They will be as follows and compressed to around 1.8kb each. should be 24x24 and located in /usr/local/lib/X11/mini-icons/ and called EmbeddedBookmarks.png since the 2 different bookmarks use the same image, but 2 different icon names, thats why one is messing a icon in the menu, one has a cap"E" and one has a lowercase"e" in the .desktop
ttuuxxx

Below is the replacement images, at 24x24 the icons are much clearer than at 128x128, when installing them place them in /usr/local/lib/X11/mini-icons/
then system link
/usr/local/lib/X11/mini-icons/EmbeddedBookmarks.png to
/usr/local/lib/X11/mini-icons/embeddedbookmarks.png
and restart JWM your missing icon should be fixed, really the misspelling in the .desktop file should be fix, but until then this is how.

Hi

small detail - Abiword icon on desktop does not start Wproc. although
it seems to try.

However - Abiword does start and close from terminal.

Gnumeric seems to start and close OK.

All seems ok so far - will play some more and inform.

best regards - Ray

Also /usr/local/Pictureviewer/graphics.png 13kb <---128x128 icon
note to developers, I am sure that your products are really nice and work great, but we try to keep things a min in puppy as you know, sneaking in 128x128 icons is a waste of space, and the image quality when cropped for the menu is terrible from 128x128 to 24x24 or 16x16, please do not include such large icons, menu icons go in /usr/local/lib/X11/mini-icons/
48x48 icons go in /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps, not in secret folders with system links to usr/share/pixmpas. I understand your 128x128 is for a desktop wbar application for when you scroll over it, the icons increases in size, well by default the rest of 48x48 icons do not have a matching 128x128 icon in puppy so include like 3 rouge icon sizes isn't going to help the rest out, maybe if this is your plan, possible make a 128x128 icon pet pack for the repo of all the 48x48 icons, but those 3x 128x128 icons take the space of almost 30x 24x24 icons. Thank you

Tested pup4-417-k2.6.30.1.iso, observations so far:

1. ext4 partitions can be mounted and edited
2. Gparted 3.3 needs to be updated to the latest version 4.5 or later.
3. Cannot set global font size with setup wizard
4. Tried unsuccessfully to install Mozilla firefox 3.5
5. Successfully installed firefox-3.0.11, however when update to 3.5 was attempted, it appeared to update but failed to run. It was missing libdbus-glib-1.so.3 which I located and installed, then it was missing libdbus-1.so.3, so I stopped.
6. Tried unsuccessfully to load sfs files such as Openoffice3 and ff3 which work fine with other 4 series.
7. Tried Firefox35.pet which worked fine on other 4 series, however, system froze when it started, keyboard and mouse would not work. Had to power down to get out since Ctrl-Alt-Backspace would not work.
8. Pwidgets works great.

I continue to be amazed at it's blazing speed.

Barry, This version with the 2.6.30.1 works fine on my computer. It gets past the boot-up stage and the keyboard works fine.

The k2.6.25.16 would not work on my computer and therefore I had to use the k2.6.21.7 retro kernel in the past.

Some other observations:

I like PupTV, maybe this will allow me to ditch pay TV. Are there more channels available?

My wireless card was not detected which was with previous versions.
Previous versions identified my card as a Texas Instruments 111 wireless interface.

PPM still does not work. I think this must be something to do with my router/modem as it worked fine a long time back but not for the last year or so. Email, browser, xchat, attym and Psip all work fine. gFTP does not work either or I should say not often. I use Total Commander through wine for FTP, no problems.

I did manage to lock up the system. I tried to create a PDF file from NicEdit before I had configured CUPS. Probably not a good thing to do but others will have the same bad experience.

Hi

I think I have the same wireless issue as smokey01, I have a Netgear wg311v2 that has the TI chipset, loads automatically in 42x but there seems to be no module in 417 k2.6.30.1. I have a spare wg111v2 that uses rtl8187 and no problems, straight online :)

With the 2.6.25.16 kernel the TI module is there... acx_pci

Cheers

That's good news. It would be really great if Puppy could move on the needing the latest kernel only.

This looks promising.

It would certainly save you and many others some work if we only needed to use one kernel.

Mm, I wonder if it can read a SIM card in a card reader as removable mass storage.

I will let you know once I have tested it.

Belkin Wireless keyboard doesn't work for me with 2.6.30.1 at setup stage, can't get any input to keyboard country menu but works fine with 2.6.25.16

Apologies if I've missed something but I've been offline for a few weeks.

Hi,
thanks again Barry!
Zfind seems very attractive!
I have difficulties with Zfind; it could find - let's say - the file 2barks.wav only if entering the path /usr/share/audio...!? Otherwise it frozes.
I browsed the web to find a tuto...but Zfind looks so dead simple that it should'nt not need a tuto.
I keep not understand how to use it...

Hi,
It has been fixed by Pizzasgood: (many thanks to him!)
here
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 9&start=75

Code: Select all

...Turns out I only had to recompile gtk with the --enable-debug option. Works fine without touching glib.
I also compiled it with --enable-xinput=yes, because otherwise people with drawing tablets can't use pressure sensitivity, and I'm sure there are other peripherals that use xinput.
Just install this over your existing gtk. Note: you probably can't use this as a standalone gtk package in Unleashed. Most likely you need to copy this into the current package, overwriting the files, because I believe the original package has some other configuration files and such that aren't in this one.
gtk+-2.12.1-xinput-debug.pet
EDIT: file removed - it's slightly broken - does not work with SCIM. See several posts down, I posted a corrected version.
Tested on 4.11 and 4.12 only.

It seems that neither the latest ATI-Catalyst video driver version 9.6 nor the original ATI-Catalyst version 8.12 pet built by MU will work in Pup4-417 using the latest 2.6.30.1 kernel.

I have just tried pup4-417 Alpha with the older kernel version 2.6.25.16 which works OK with MU's ATI-Catalyst version 8.12.

So it looks as if it would be a good idea to retain the option of having the older kernel version at least for the moment, until such times as a successful build of the ATI-Catalyst driver (of whatever version) becomes available for the later kernel.
