type uname -r in a terminal and it will tell you your kernel version. |
2.6.25.16

Yes, Frugal. OK, will do.

You might want to consider downloading Fatdog and see if you can get it to work with blackberry before you do all this. |
Will Fatdog run off a CD?
Seamonkey 2.0 w/Flash made a mess copying some but not all of my Mail archives into my Personal Storage File and I haven't yet had a chance to fix that - thus the old PSF bottleneck is back making a nuisance of itself.
Is Fatdog stable enough to use all the time?
What are the key features of Fatdog versus Puppy 4.2.1, please?

Yes, fatdog will run off CD. Boot with pfix=ram so it does not use your pup_save file. Then you can see if it works for you. Like I said, getting the correct settings for wvdial is the biggest problem. If you've got the devx file and the kernel sfs files then you can try it in 4.2.1.

I have them and was trying to run checksum but the checksum for the kernel src is incorrect - one has a 15 and the other a 16.
Could it be a typo or did someone post the wrong checksum?

Do you have /usr/src/linux-2.6.25.16 directory? If not the kernel source sfs file is not installed. If your sfs file doesn't end with _421.sfs it won't automatically be loaded at boot. You can rename the file or Go to Menu - System - Bootmanager and click on the choose which sfs files to load button.
/lib/modules/2.6.25.16/build should be linked to /usr/src/linux-2.6.25.16 hopefully that is done in the kernel source sfs, if not you'll have to do it.

I have a Frugal install of 4.2.1
There is no /usr/src/ folder.
If I use the BootManager and select Kernel src dos that mean it will boot every time?
I think that I just need devx and kernel to compile xmblackberry because it is not available as a PET -- once I have compiled it do I need either any more for that?

Nope, Just go to Menu - System - Bootmanager and remove what you don't need anymore.

OK, I am doing the Snoopy Dance ...
Modem Mode Enabled!
It is late and I have to be up early but I wanted to share the good news ... thanks to all of the assistance!
In between busyness tomorrow I will try to actually get logged-on and communicate with the Internet from my laptop via my Blackberry.
I was with Alltel but they have now been swallowed-up in a quite erratic manner by Verizon, so I am guessing that the Verizon protocols now apply ...

I edited wvdial.conf with my phone number then tried to run this ...
and it's behaving badly:
| Quote: | --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.53
--> Cannot open /dev/bbmodem0: No such file or directory
--> Cannot open /dev/bbmodem0: No such file or directory
--> Cannot open /dev/bbmodem0: No such file or directory |
What might cause this, and might be the solution, please?
There is no /dev/bbmodem0

Looks like your kernel module is not loading. When the kernel module loads it creates /dev/bbmodem0. Make sure you replaced /usr/share/blackberry/blackberry.ko with the one that you compiled. After trying to connect if you get the /dev/bbmodem0 not found message, open a terminal and type:
# dmesg
On the last few lines, see if there is a problem reported with the blackberry module. If that doesn't show anything type:
# lsmod
That will show what kernel modules are loaded, make sure that you see blackberry listed.
If that looks OK, look in the /dev directory, maybe the module creates a node with a different name for your phone.

This may be true, but it seems very strange to me that a kernel module would be necessary with XmBlackberry, especially since XmBlackberry does not create this module, and also that the module is somewhat experimental.
I see that the barry-0.14 source code creates a udev file which may contain the necessary logic to create the device node. Here's a section of that rule -
| Code: | BUS=="usb", SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", ACTION=="add", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0fca", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0001", SYMLINK+="bb-%k", RUN="/usr/sbin/bcharge -p %p"
BUS=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ACTION=="add", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0fca", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0001", SYMLINK+="bb-%k", RUN="/usr/sbin/bcharge -p %p" |
I still struggle to understand udev, but I understand that "%k" is the kernel-generated device name.
Maybe this rule, or a Puppy-friendly interpretation of it, should be added to /etc/udev/rules.d

I did that per instructions - but was told to do it in /usr/share/blackberry/
Also, since I was done compiling I toggled both devx and kernel-src off (to sav rsources and time when booting), should I have left one or both set to load at boot?

This text is incorrect:
| Quote: | This script will load the blackberry module and run wvdial.
Edit the file /usr/share/blackberry-modem/wvdial.conf to suit your needs.
If a connection is not established, exit this application, disconnect-reconnect
the USB cable and try again.
Make sure your Blackberry is on and connected to the USB port! Click OK to continue.
|
The address is actually:
/usr/share/blackberry/wvdial.conf
Instead of:
/usr/share/blackberry-modem/wvdial.conf
WDYT?

I toggled devx back on at boot and rebooted.
When I click connect it flashes a window too fast to view then nothing.
Not sure why that is happening since things appeared to be working back when I first compiled and ran this.
