There are several small, low cost computers in the works such as miniPC, http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS8464432110.html , the $100 laptop, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/$100_laptop & Simputer, http://www.simputer.org/ . Puppy doesn't need a hard drive and you could S-Video to a TV for the monitor so we think the cost could be very low while the performance is high. Currently we are running a Alienx remastered Puppy 1.0.7 with Open Office (from PupGet) plus Firefox 1.5 and Thunderbird 1.5 (from mozilla.com). It seems that if people could go to the computer store and buy a low cost, high performing computer, it would sell very well.

I checked out the simputer site, and even checked out some of the software they are providing. I tried DHVANI a text to speech software for Indian languages, currently hindi and kannada. The output is scratchy but this is the first time I have seen a tts for regional languages. It takes input in form of utf text files.

We should have included AMD's Personal Internet Computer (PIC), http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/125 , which sells for approx. $185 US. We recommend having an option with no hard drive (but USB ports for external hard drive, flash drive, mouse, keyboard), 512K memory, faster CPU, HDMI outlet to use TV as a monitor. If you could have the modified AMD PIC computer with the modified Puppy software for about the same price, you should have a winner!

We think Puppy could be the compelling low cost computer application that could help Linux break into the retail market. Apple has had good success with the Mac Mini, and think with Puppy (or SUSE) there could be a better competing product for less money.
