The wikka wiki was upgraded to version 1.2. The new features are listed here.
Config options:
1 - "enable_user_host_lookup" - now this is set in the config, and I set it to 0 (not enabled);
2 - theme fine-tuning (still ongoing).
Your feedback is welcome.

Great news Raffy
Right at the bottom of the page is info advertising wikka that is a distraction
Can it go?
Look forward to a new theme (if You find one you like)

As a registered user, you can change the display
to Kubrick (similar to Wordpress) and 'light'
(in your settings option)
I have changed the front page so it also displays
reasonably in these wikka 1.2 themes
Will other than the default theme be used?

Now that is a big argument to get registered in the wiki, isn't it, to be able to choose your own theme.
I wonder if we can agree to use one theme for version 1.2 of wikka wiki.

Can people go to the wiki and register?
Is the below valid?
| Quote: | Q: How do I register
A: Click on Login/Register. For the login itself make sure that cookies are enabled for this site within your web browser. |
There was a time when people had to apply to an admin to register (spam). Has that now been lifted?

Yes, it is. However, self-registration is still not allowed.
At the register/login page, the following is still there:
| Quote: | To add yourself to this wiki, please email indicating your desired username. Thanks for your patience. |
Registration this way is attended to within 24 hours given normal situation.
However, some readers who apply were led to it because they thought that registering is required for browsing the wiki (they encounter "edit" code in some URLs, which told them to register). Solution = Contributors, please check that the URL you insert does not contain the "edit" code.

I suggest trying a month or two with it off
| Quote: | | self-registration is still not allowed. |
We are still getting spam (less of it)
but we are doubtless losing a lot of potential casual editors
We now have easier admin controls
So unless puppite and coolpup (main admins) disagree
maybe we can try without over-management tactics?
What do you think?

I have not looked yet, but are admins now able to delete users? If so, we can restore self-registration. But as you said, the admins have to give their opinion.
EDIT: Yes, admins can delete users, and no confirmation was asked! DemoStix, if you're reading this, please email me if you want to restore your account.
My own opinion here is that it is easier to register 1-2 true contributors per day than to delete hundreds of spam accounts every week.
As it is, about a third of registration queries are misled by "edit" code in wiki URLs or password prompt when downloading a file (ie, from puppylinux.asia or puppyisos.org). Another third are gmail or yahoo account users with meaningless names whose intent is apparently to spam the wiki (They never reply to friendly query so they are not registered).
Yes, call it "over-management", but spammers and crackers are ruthless when allowed room.
Maybe we can invite "gentle spammers"?
ADDITION: Of the 67 registered users, only 10 have added any page at all. That makes actual contributors as 15% of registered users. (For those who have edited any page at all, the number is 11 users.)

I agree with Raffy on this:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=347290#347290
IMO this is a reliable method for discouraging spam.
I disagree with Lobster about the link to the wiki software site:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=326184#326184
Linking to the home page of the free software in use is a time honored tradition and rightfully so, it shows gratitude for the developer’s efforts. It also shows others where they can get what they need to setup their own wiki.
On Lobster’s other point I say the following: If the wiki XHTML is corrected so that it will pass the W3C validator test then I think we should keep the link to it at the bottom of every wiki page. If however the wiki XHTML is not able to pass the XHTML validator test then IMO the link should not appear on any wiki page.
Raffy: If you like I can show you how to correct the errors in the wiki XHTML so that it can pass the validator test, you only need to ask.
Raffy: Before the software upgrade every wiki page had a link to the home page (at the top of every page). IMO this is an indispensable navigation tool, I think it should be put back.

Thanks, Puppyite, for pointing out the error in XHTML code. It is now corrected.
(FYI, the codes are stock wikka wiki 1.2, and I merely inserted the Puppy logo and modified some CSS colors in the default theme. Re: homepage URL - it is still there in the header.)
I understand that the XHTML and CSS validation URLs are there at the footer for anyone to be able to check a page at his/her option. Plus, of course, the WikkaWiki link which you already explained.

Thanks to you too.

Not really. Once you navigate away from the home page the link you speak of is no longer there. For instance: Go to Home > PageIndex (link to home page on that page is gone). Click any page in the index and you will see that none of them have a link back to the home page.
Before the upgrade there was a hard link to the home page on every wiki page. It appeared on the same line as:
| Code: | | Home :: Categories :: PageIndex :: RecentChanges :: RecentlyCommented :: Login/Register :: Search |
I recommend the home page link be put back where it was previously so it will again be visible on every wiki page.

Did I offend or is it a bad idea? |

Raffy,
Since you have not said either yea or nay about my home page link suggestion I’m wondering if you took offence at how I worded it. If so then please accept my apology.

Not really, am just puzzled, because the home page is always there whenever I browse the wiki.
I tried other templates but the home page URL is still there.
What am I missing?

I was a little surprised by newcomer KittyCat's recent forthright comments -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=42593&start=165
Blinding glimpse of the obvious - newbies can't use the Wiki if they can't find it! (Thanks Kitty).
Too many newbies missing out on Puppy's (hidden) treasures - I'm putting in a plea for a rethink of the future default browser homepage -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=47021&start=15
- but maybe for now, a new link would help on the page accessed from the browser homepage , i.e.
http://www.puppylinux.org/wikka/ForumsPuppy

Raffy,
In my Sunday post I gave code which IIRC shows where the home page link was previously located on every wiki page, perhaps it wasn't a clear enough example.
Please tell me where in the screenshot below you believe there exists an explicit link to the wiki home page? When I say explicit, I mean where do you see the word "Home" that is an HTML link to the wiki home page?
