Boot failure. Err msg: 'hde: host protected area => 1'

#1 Post by JontomXire »

When I try and boot on my computer at work (SATA hard drive) the boot process seems to hang. The last message onthe screen is something along the lines of:

/dev/hde => Area 1 locked

Not very accurate - I guess I should have written it down.

It boots into Windows fine though.

You mean some Windows work machines are secured - well I never - what will they think of next . . .

Which version are you runnning? If 1.0.3 does this happen with the second boot option? Do you know of any security measures on your work computer that ensure that Puppys are not coming in and having a frisky moment?

I just found out about the second boot option and thought I would give it a go. Same problem.

I'm running 1.0.3. I installed the machine from scratch (a couple of times actually) and I don't know of any such security precautions that might cause the problem.

The exact last message is:

hde: host protected area => 1

As a note, I noticed that some places mentioned that NTFS might be a problem. I am running Win2k with three NTFS partitions on my hard drive. All have a good chunk of free space.

I doubt that NTFS is the problem. Puppy boots fine from CD on my machine with W2KPro on 2 NTFS partitions and Linux on 3 more partitions.

It's not clear from your second post whether you installed Puppy to your hard drive or are booting from CD.

Sorry - booting from CD.

I have been looking up "host protected area". Here is an interesting link

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/PreDesktop_Area

It looks like the HPA is an area that the manufacturers of the computer arbitrarily decided to prevent me from using! Stuff them!

A bit more investigation and I may have some space on my hard disk for an ext2 partition so I can play around with Puppy Unleashed :)

YEEEHAAA, WAAAHEEYYY, and YABBA DABBA DOOOOOO!

Booting Puppy off the CD, and doing all the config, is quicker than starting Windows!

I LOVE PUPPY!

This is instant convert stuff. Once I build my own custom distro with just the apps I want and get it on a business card CD I am going to start training The Wife to use Puppy Linux:)

I still want help getting it to work at work btw.

P.s. anyone know how to run Windows games (D2, Baldur's Gate, GTA San Andreas, etc. etc.) through Puppy?

So, help out the next guy: what was the problem? What did you do to fix it?

No, no, no, you don't understand.

I got it to work at home.

It still won't work at work.

I should have made it more clear.

I am sure I saw another post in this forum where some guy said one version of Puppy hung at the same place, and another version hung at a different place, but I have re-searched the forums many times and cannot find that post again.

There was a similar problem reported for a completely different version of Linux (searched google for host protected area) but no solution.
