Setup wizards now have 'Brief' option with fewer prompts.

* KDE SFS:
Big changes for 443: You can switch at logout to either KDE 3.5.10 or the new KDE 4.3.1. Most KDE4 apps work in KDE3, LXDE, IceWM & JWM. The kfmclient (Konqueror file management) outside of KDE4, uses 'kfmclient3' from KDE 3.5.10.

* Voyager SFS: Includes LiquidWeather++ for KDE3 and additional KDE3 & 4 help files and wallpapers

***Bugs and quirks***
Installing Pwidgets-2.2.3 or earlier causes a crash and prevents X from starting. Use the latest version of Pwidgets instead: Pwidgets page (works in JWM and IceWM)

Kopete in KDE doesn't load Live Messenger (MSN) plugin. Recommend to install Pidgin SFS here or in Gslapt Package Manager.

Multi-user is experimental, not perfect. Can login as root (default) or as user 'spot'. User profiles in '/home'. Add User, Change Passwd, Autologin tools in System Menu. Some apps prompt to log in as root.

By design, LHP's boot option 'pfix=fsck' may check all found Linux partitions, then the pupsave. (Using 'psubdir=<pupsave dir>' on the kernel line in GRUB will check only that partition, then the pupsave.) This behavior differs from official Puppy, which only checks the host partition and the pupsave.

If KDE 4.3.3's taskbar is set to autohide, it stays hidden. Best to use one of the other settings--always show or windows can cover.

In KDE the remote desktop client and desktop sharing have not been tested. They did not work in prior releases.

ATI Catalyst 9.9 works fine but Catalyst 9.3 is broken--hard freeze upon launching any openGL/3D apps, including catalyst control center, so it is not included in Mariner SFS although there is a pet available here.

tazok,

You've done another outstanding job and as usual, I'm sticking with the KDE4 Kickstart desktop. Everything appears to be very stable, however, there is a problem locating the Nvideo driver 180.44 that 442 used for my Geforce 8400 GS video card. Isn't that driver supposed to be in the Mariner sfs?
This is the console output:
Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".

I continue to be amazed at all of the extras that you've included, only had to add Pidgin and you made that easy with Gslapt.

Thanks again,

Hi Jim,
Thank you for your feedback. Yes Mariner SFS includes the driver 'nVidia latest' that should work with your adapter. I built it from NVIDIA-185.18.36-k2.6.30.5-1.pet by forum member gray at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=341976. I don't have a recent nVidia box to test on, so it's possible I didn't build it correctly.

First try 'nVidia latest' in xorgwizard. If you haven't already also try 'nVidia 173'.

You might try exiting X to CL and type 'nvidia-xconfig --help'. If the driver doesn't detect your card, and you haven't already I would d/l gray's pet above and install it in Puppy4.3 to test it. If it works, try installing it in Lighthouse with a new pup_save ('puppy pfix=ram' at boot menu).

If it doesn't work and you have the development add-ons loaded (devx and linux-2.6.30.5) you could try the nVidia installer from their website http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_disp ... 18.36.html

Hope that helps,
TazOC

Hiya tazoc, nice work. Have a small problem with connecting via wireless, get the error as per attached. I am using a Linksys Usb adapter that uses the RT73usb driver. Am working on fixing it myself but any help appreciated.

cheers

Hello Tazoc,
I also had some difficulty with the Nvidia driver. Installed the "latest" from the installation menu and got a disjointed screen, lines at the top and the left side displaced to the right.
Did a second install, this time just going with the normal xorg entry, then installed "NVIDIA-185.18.36-k2.630.5-1.pet" and that worked just fine.

Got a joystick problem with this version of lighthouse though.
Lighthouse 4.4.2 recognised my Saitek X52 joystick ok after doing a modprobe joydev. In pup-430 some old usb joysticks would be recognised but not the X52. Unfortunately looks like the problem has been imported into Lighthouse 4.4.3. Working at it but not having much luck.

Edit

Forget this, just googled for X52 + kernel 2.6.30, turns out there's a bug in 2.6.30 which prevents recognition of the X52.

joydev: blacklist digitizers avoids recognition of Saitek X52
This bug is related to a bad commit to joydev which now blacklists x52
joysticks.(d07a9cba6be5c0e947afc1014b5a62182a86f1f1)

Guess I'll have to wait on next kernel :)

tazok,

Your link above to the Nvideo drivers solved my problem.
You outdo yourself with each upgrade.

Compiz-Fusion SFS updated for LHP 443

#7 Post by tazoc »

Compiz-Fusion SFS: Updated to 0.8.2b--fixes missing shadows on two LHP Emerald themes by reducing the shadow radius.

Today I noticed I'm able to layer more than 8 squash files; not sure what changed but the limit for extra SFS in Lighthouse Pup should be 40.

@jasmac, I don't have any ideas, other than searching the forum and testing in Puppy 4.3 (same kernel as LHP 443)

@gersen, Thanks for the feedback and update about the kernel.

@Jim1911, Glad its working, I might just remove the modified nVidia drivers from Mariner and point to the downloads.

Feedback

#8 Post by Barburo »

Hi TazOC,
I'm liking this version quite a lot.

I copied three firmware files for my wireless card from /lib/firmware in 442 to same location in 443:
ipw2200-bss.fw
ipw2200-ibss.fw
ipw2200-sniffer.fw
...and my wireless now works.

I find that this versions seems to be faster.
Also the new C-F seems to work in KDE3 with my Intel chipset, and wbar now operational in KDE3!

Still testing ... will keep you posted. B.

Please keep the nVideo drivers in Mariner, the problem was probably due to the switch in kernels, and you need to swap out the old kernel drivers for the match to the kernel used.
Thanks,
Jim

Hi tazoc, I have tried puppy 4.3 and network works in that. I have used both lighthouse base and mariner with the same results. I can't seem to find a definitive answer on what the fix maybe. All answers always ask if the drivers are loaded in the correct place. I am still trying, I think I will install both 4.3 and lighthouse side by side with a full install and see if there are any differences within the directories.

Cheers

Hi TazOC,

Wonderful puplet.

Tested with Base iso:

HD install in ext4 is failing, though with ext2 it works. rt73usb wireless card with wpa not working. Needed to use ndiswrapper. Nvidia drivers pet (185.18.36) don't install and had to use the nvidia installer ( using devx and kernel sfs). With mariners.sfs latest nvidia drivers install nicely with good fps.

Will test further and update.

using a amd64 machine.

Jasmac,
See this post about rt73usb
http://www.puppylinux.com/blog/?viewDetailed=00209 "rt2500usb needs to be blacklisted to allow only rt73usb to load."

If that doesn't apply maybe Garcot's ndiswrapper approach (previous post) would help? I don't know how to do that.

Garcot,
Thank you for the feedback. Booting LHP from ext4 is not here yet, a work-in-progress; when Puppy 4.3.x bugs have been squashed and I feel it's ready, I'll re-build an LHP Base ISO from Puppy.

Barburo,
Maybe I should also swap the ipw2200 firmware for the next release? I opened the archives to compare and the only difference I could find was the ownership; 442 was root:root and 443 (and Puppy 4.30) is ftp:users.

Jim1911, I double checked, the nVidia modules are for the new kernel. Something else, maybe GL libs or xorgwizard isn't right. I wish I had a recent nVidia box to test on.

443a feedback

#16 Post by Barburo »

Hi Taz,
I have set up 443 on a slower 1.4MHz desktop with KDE3 (KDE4 didn't run very well - no taskbar).
I set GTK theme to Stardust. I clicked on PCMan and got this error.

I think something's up becasue in a list of files the "already read" items appear so faint on the background that I cannot see them.

One other thing happens when I use the KDE menu editor for the first time.
I get an error box that says something about hot keys not being recognized. Click close and the editor opens OK and also OK on subsequent uses. Sorry no graphic as the error doesn't repeat.

There is a small file missing. Open ROX-Filer to /root, create a new empty file called '.gtkrc.mine'. Open it with a text editor and paste the following:

Code: Select all

gtk-icon-theme-name="LXDE"
Save it and close. Now PCManFM should open normally. This will be fixed for the next release.

What app is that in? Still in KDE3? Stardust theme?

Hmm, I couldn't reproduce that, though it sounds familiar. Thank you for finding the PCManFM bug.

Hi tazok,

I've tried installing this as a full hd installation, however the Puppy universal installer does not work. Although, it indicates that it is copying files, all that gets copied is a Boot directory.

Still enjoying it,
Jim

Hi Jim,
Yes, a LHP443a clean frugal would be a good way to test this nVidia 185 driver. Can you place this file in '/usr/local/graficsdrivers/', exit X and re-run xorgwizard, choosing 'nVidia latest'. This file is part of Mariner SFS, so if Mariner loads, you'll need to overwrite this file afterward.
http://lhpup.org/test/443/nvidia.tgz 13.4 MB

Re: Full hd install, thanks, I will look into that.
Update: I tried a full install in VirtualBox to an ext3 partition and the file copy seemed to work OK but booting from GRUB gave "Error 2, bad file or directory type" and I don't know how to fix that.

Code: Select all

title Lighthouse Linux 4.43 (full on sda3)
root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda3 pmedia=atahd
[/color]Thank you,

Hi tazok,

Your new nvidia.tgz worked fine.

Your LH has become my favorite which is why I was trying a full hd installation. However, I'll wait until you start working on the version that's based on Barry's new 431 to try another full hd installation. I believe that he had some installer problems that had to be corrected also.

Regardless, my frugal installation does what I want it to do.

Thanks,
Jim
