Nvidia drivers in puppy 4.31

#22 Post by abi »

Hey gray!

I'm having persistent problems installing the nvidia drivers in puppy 4.31.
CatDude suggested I asked you for help.
I've installed NVIDIA-173.14.20-k2.6.30.5-1.pet which I think is the right package for the Nvidia FX5600 w/128Mb video RAM, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I get the following error when running the nvidia xserver settings utility:

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

I have tried to restart the Xserver which results in being left at a command prompt and have checked the xorg.conf file, changed the nv to nvidia, again I was left at a command prompt. I ran xorgwizard to regain my desktop

When I do lsmod, I can find no reference to nvidia
When I do modprobe nvidia I get FATAL: Module nvidia not found.

This is my first puppy, I'm at a loss, any help would be much appreciated 8)

Same problem for me yesterday, but it works now. Here's what I do.

- Reinstall Puppy 4.3
- Install NVIDIA-173.14.20-k2.6.30.5-1.pet
- Restart X-server

I hope that yours will work.

Thanks for your suggestion auriza but I really wanted to fix the problem rather than doing a fresh install etc., perhaps someone else can help me.....

Hi Abi

perhaps this link will help. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=47049

I've installed nvidia drivers from official nvidia sources successfully in Ubuntu and other Linuxes but I haven't tried this with Puppy. Should work if you have the compiler and kernel sources. Iguleder does a good job of describing what to do.

Good luck

If this doesn't work then I think you probably have a more exotic problem not specifically related to puppy. I had an NVIDIA problem with a GF8800GT and Vuewsonic 2025WX monitor in which I always got a 640x480 display with the nvidia drivers. My display is 1680x1050. Turned out to have nothing to do with Linux at all.

Hi Abi

I'd encourage you to give this a go. I just tried it on a Puppy 431 installation and it went very smoothly and was easy.

If you need some more help just let me know and I'll see what I can do. I'd make a copy of your save file first just in case but I don't think there should be any problem. I'm going to upgrade my nvidia driver on my main puppy now.

Thanks for your reply again Chris. I've been playing with this for long enough. A fresh install is probably in order. There's no important data on this system but I just hate re-installing without trying all the options available first. It's how I learn about things. Thanks again.

Hi,
I'm new to puppy, everything seems fine but the video adapter.
I'm trying to install NVIDIA-96.43.13-k2.6.30.5-1.pet to puppy 4.3.1 on Compaq Tc1000 tablet with a Geforce2 Go adapter. Install ends "successful", but after restarting x I get a black screen and cannot go back. I have tried browserlinux 3.5.3 (4.1.2 kernel) with correct pet, same
result.
I can't go further to explore and use puppy, need your help...

I installed NVIDIA-71.86.11-k2.6.30.5-1.pet on an old pc (TNT2 M64 is the gpu) running puppy linux 4.31 frugall install. Everything worked ok with the install. I restarting x, x failed to start, restarted puppy again x failed to start. After running what auriza said in a previsous post:

Code: Select all

# depmod-FULL
# modprobe nvidia
# nvidia-xconfig
# xwin
X started without any problem after this and so far it didn't do any problems.

Thanks, CatDude!

Another Google search (I almost never get help with forum searches) turned up another site that didn't require a password. Regretfully, the driver didn't work for me, and I started a new thread about that adventure.

I'm Running NOP 4.3.1 w/ a Full install Finally after having a Lot of Trouble Upgrading from NOP 4.1.3 Full install which I Couldn't install grays' NVidia-96.43.7 Pet nor the Latest NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.14-pkg1.run Package from the NVidia Website.

Now having Upgraded to NOP 4.3.1 I've Tried Both Grays NVIDIA-96.43.13-k2.6.30.5 Pet & the Official Proprietary NVidia Run Package, & in All Cases X Wont Run the LCD Screen Changes from Black & then a white band starts from the bottom Horizonal edge & then the Perimeter of the Screen & then the wHole Screen Turns White?!?

:? What's Happening? Can I Edit the xorg.conf File? Can AnyBody Help Please?

If you're still looking for your log file, at least in a standard Puppy it is /var/log/Xorg.0.log

BTW you might like to help people actually read your posts by using a selection of paragraphs, sentence case, shorter sentences or bullet points ;)
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

MaxHeadroom,

The NVidia-96.43.7.pet is for the 2.6.25.16 kernel and so wont work. You need the http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/NOP/NVID ... 30.5-1.pet

Unfortunately the latter pet needs an update as the install script makes a depmod call which doesn't work in puppy 4.3.1 it should be depmod-FULL

After installing the pet (or indeed after trying to install the pkg.run file) drop out of X ( ctrl alt backspace) then enter depmod-FULL.

Then enter xwin to restart the X windows.
if it still doesnt work you may have to run nvidia-xconfig
