Puppy gurus For Hire

#1 Post by cougar »

Of course I like Puppy, What's not to like? However, finding answers to sometimes simple questions takes more time then I'm willing to spend, so I limp along running on only two cylinders stead of four.

I've got a little cash and would be willing to part with it for "answers". How could that be made to happen?

Cougar

P.S. - So much of the very worthwhile info on the forum is dealt with using arcane programming lingo (for someone like me). Further, while the search engine is good, often you've got to muddle through all kinds of other discussions that are sometimes hard to follow, also, for someone like me. If Puppy is to ever grow into a "wolf", it must meet "the masses" at least half way. That's why Mr. Gates has been paid his billions, because he took all this "arcane lingo" and hid it behind easily understood (to the unwashed masses) little "pictures" called icons.

In that regard, some type of little add on (pup-get etc.) that would give a well thought out (not wordy) explanation of each entity with possibly a "link" to a complete explanation might be worthwhile. Fer instance, I'm having a devil of a time figuring out something that I know will be simple. The "console" in Puppy. I can find no documentation that will tell me how to "paste" a line I have to use every log on in order to get my "anonymous" service running.

Just some thoughts from a guy who hasn't yet waded very deep into the forest. Thanks & BTW, you guys are doin a hell of a job.

Oh come on now...

Against my better judgement, I visited Google and started typing "how to paste to", at which time Google provided five "completions." I chose "command prompt" (which is what you have in the console), and then chose the fifth Google hit:

Thanks Alienjeff. I would've gladly paid twenty bucks for that answer: you just "copy" then use "shift and insert". So simple. I wasted hours searching for some type of documentation or something.

While I'm at it, theres a great little piece of software, no , "wonderful" piece of software called "FreeMind". Barry claims one of the add ons in the Pupget list (I forget which) will do almost the same thing. I downloaded it. It's OK but doesn't nearly measure up. In fact, the only reason I keep Windows is because I can run freemind on it.

Now, imagine the whole (complex) forum cataloged using freemind. Freemind is intended to make the "complex" manageable via a treelike mindmap. It might not obviate the seach engine, but it could take all posts of a particular narrow topic and connect them all in a flowing, logical order. Just a thought from Cougar

if you are using the same command in the console every time, and you are saving your session on logout, you should be able to press the up arrow and it will come up with your last entered command. If you keep pressing up, it scrolls through all the previous entered commands too. That can be very useful if you've done something before, and can't exactly remember how to do it again.
Hope this helps

Freemind is a java application so it runs on Puppy too:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 025#183025
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 731#357351

Freemind has already been used on the Wiki apparently:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 731#339320

There is a similar (some say better) Eclipse/java app called xmind which will also run on MS Windows or Puppy:

http://www.xmind.net/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XMIND

EDIT: I have read that xmind is way heavier on RAM than freemind though.

you can google the program to find the home page of the program containing screen shots and full documentation

most full distros have everything you need already installed
and are easier to start with

other non puppy examples of what programs do below
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://linuxappfinder.com/

one example of what a short description of what a "program" does
called apps or packages
http://pkgs.slitaz.org/stable/office.html

*those are not puppy packages

most "distros" * other operating systems *have something like this

http://slackfind.net/en/packages/search/?name=man

when in doubt you can also use others
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages#view

the point here is packages can have a simple description of what they do but what is more important is what other programs are needed
to make it all work correctly

choose but choose wisely

I think the link alienjeff provided higher up this thread answered that:

If you use a device with only two buttons, you can usually simulate the middle button by clicking both the left and right buttons simultaneously. If it doesn't work automatically, there should be an option to enable it in the mouse wizard under Menu->Setup, named something like "third button emulation on a two button mouse".

In the case of a trackpad, at least on my own laptop, you may be able to tap it with two fingers to perform a middle-click (and three fingers for right-click). That of course requires that you have the tap-to-click feature enabled. Some Puppies have it disabled by default.

I don't own a trackball mouse, don't plan on owning one, therefore don't really give a flying fook.

@tlchost

If you review this thread, I answered one of the OP's questions.

You tacked on the bit about a trackball mouse. I don't own one and don't plan on buying one.

Do your own research instead of chastising me for my response to you.

I thought you may know the answer....but in typical Jeff fashion you dropped fecal matter in the punch bowl.

I think I may have opened up an area I haven't seen much of in other topics (maybe).

First, Puppy is fantastic, I mean it's just fricking fantastic. You guys may know this, but after a while when exposed to something wonderful the beauty wears off and it seems not as special as it did at first. Puppy could change the world in that it picks up where Gates left off.

In order to corner the market Gates had to constantly "give you more" by uping the ante. This meant more apps and "more code" and "big". Windows is now a behemouth and as such is vulnerable. But very few people know or realize that this little tiny dog from New Zealand can solve all their problems, especially the big one.

I've labored over Windows for over a decade which feels like a century. Then, about a year ago I noticed a little icon in the startup tray called I believe the "Remove Hardware Safely" icon. Well, I'd beens removing usb and pcmcia stuff for years without any problems. So I thought "why this heavy little program at startup? A program I can't not run by taking it out of the lineup in msconfig, one that also has this little non-descript icon?"

I went to the Google and could find precious little about it, and then I started getting very worried. "Could this thing be 'something else' I wondered". It was then I started seriously looking for another OS and found that cute little puppy from New Zealand. But their are problems.

I've introduced others to Puppy by giving them Cds and they tell me in so many words that the learning curve is being bogged down by their inability to get at answers to their questions fast enough. They, like I, am "older". Are not computer "savy". Have this built in idea that a new OS is going to be "difficult".

Take my questions above: AlienJeff couldn't believe that I didn't think of entering "how do I paste" in Google. Well, I guess I didn't. People who aren't savy, but still want to use the system don't think about such things.

And the next entry spoke of "distros" then added "other operating systems". Do you have any idea of how long it took me to figure out what 'distros' means and how "put off" I was about continuing my efforts to tackle this great new system that was shrouded by all this "arcane lingo", that everyone who could answer my questions in the forum seemed to be communicating in.

Look, I'm not bitchin', I'm just sayin' that Puppy is just "three feet from gold". Google is about to launch its new OS. Who do you think they got the idea of a "lite operating system" from. Knowing Google I bet their gonna make it easy to find answers. The only thing I wonder/worry about; are they gonna have a little non-descript icon in their startup tray as well.

Didn't mean to get carried away and thanks for all the great input guys, especially the stuff about freemind. Ya know, some "simple way" to get FM into Puppy would be a real boon. It's very powerful yet little known.

For the sake of accuracy, Puppy originated in Australia, not New Zealand.

Don't let a bit of political infighting (or jousting) put you off.

Contrary to popular belief, Google is NOT your friend. Consider using Scroogle instead.
