| gposil wrote: | On new2dir point...thanks for that explanation for musher0 Mick...also alot of developers including me don't use new2dir, because they don't want the install in their development environment..The alternative is very simple, just a switch in the make install.
Just use make install DESTDIR=/blah and your new compiled app's complete directory structure will be in /blah and not installed in your development environment. |
Thanks for the tip. This solution will be best when there's no need to separate the prog into parts -- it sure clears up the confusion in the dev directory.

Oh dear! Gposil, why not burn the iso to a cd, and snail-mail it to someone with a broadband connection? Could be quicker.........

christian,
although more work, it is (my opinion) better to allways try to use DESTDIR . The simple explanation is that
(a) new2dir sometimes fails in getting all the files and
(b) that you can't control your packages if you install with new2dir because you've allready installed the full pkg.

So fickle. Why I remember back when people were excited to get beta4. Now just a bunch of bits waiting to get overwritten. Isn't it just the way of things...

Sorry guys, for the awful delay with beta5...in hindsight I should have waited till my speed came back...or taken it down to 01micko...
Future releases will be better scheduled...
Cheers

gposil, what does it cost to use your full bandwidth? Just wondering what others bills are like. I get 3m down and 300k up for US$30/month (about AU$33).

So you are always limited to 128k up and down? That would suuuuuuuuck. Plus $30 for another gig of transfer after your 7gig is used up? Is that a satellite thing or an AU thing? Man I feel for you. 128k is like having an old-school ISDN or bonding dialup modems.

The first 7Gb run at 8Mbit down and 1Mbit up...then revert to 128/128 after I have used the first 7Gb...

Ah well, that's the price we pay for living out in the country on 2400acre farm...ADSL will never come here but we may get digital optic fibre cable next year(maybe). For the time being satellite is the only alternative to 56k dialup...

Hmmm,
A bit pricey that satellite stuff... not to mention setup costs..
gposil's plan is twice the price of mine with half the value... that is the comparison of sat to adsl2+. I only live 2 km from the telephone exchange whereas gposil may be 50km (?) from one. Adsl is only good for about 5km from an exchange here I think (well that was a few years ago, I don't think it has improved a great deal).
Cheers
