XP-like Hungarian puplet

#1 Post by s-kami »

A new hungarian puplet presented by the hungarian puppy linux community.

A basic idea was to have an easy-to-handle-for beginners and looks-like-a-well-known-os for students (kids) and teacher in a basic school.

6 old machines saved from trash somehow those were too slow for windows.
1000 Mhz, 256 Mb ram, 8 GB hd...pfff...

Every computer requires for reading on the internet or listening to music, watching videos or just to play so i have suggested to save them with puppy linux. good... :-)

It is a simple puplet integrated with wine 1.1.33 for some win progs.

You guys really are keeping busy with Puppy - i've just seen your other post on the Hungarian variation of NOP :)

Congratulations on the great job you and the Hungarian Linux community are doing!

This one also should be posted on Puppy's home page for puplets,

Hey there s-kami and kros54,

I've been very happy running XP-Hungarian 528 on my main box at home for months now - nearly since you first released this - Great Job and Well Done :)

I'll jump to the request:
PLEASE will you consider updating this project using the latest 5.2.8 updates, most stable Wine release (1.4) AND equip it with working DirectX ???
I'm having a devil of a time getting XQ Player running in any Puppy environment (worked in PolarPup005 with Wine 1.3.13 but I broke the system when I tried to remaster - trimming the fat - and now can't get it back...)

My copy of XP_hu_528 is dual booted with XP and a variety of other Puplets that I've been using to coax my wife away from the 'dark side'. I particularly appreciate the care and consideration you've put in your WINE and Portable Apps configuration. It was fairly easy too to convert (most!) functions into English.
It's been so stable I thought I would use it to 'springboard' research colleagues away from their MicroSoft environments. It's been a long lead-up- I now have them using "CowLog" and the 'R' statistical environment - but they've found ways to use them all in Win7 and won't easily make the final step to Puppydom (or any similar Linux freedom). I had an opportunity to finally 'seal the deal' when they were having problems transferring multi-stream animal behaviour videorecordings using the "XQ Player" software.
I solved the problem on a much-modified version of PolarPup - couldn't remaster - sought to use XP-like Hu as an attractive, comparatively slim solution but although I have followed similar (and recent) solutions to this problem on the Puppyforums (thanks darkgame and others), and various how-to's on the Wine forum BUT I cannot get it working despite testing a wide range of Wine versions, DirectX 9 and 10 redistribs, mscoree and streamci dll's - on a range of hardware with different hi-end video drivers (nvidia and Xorg_high).
I think it would be very helpful indeed to have a 528 puplet with the Wine/DirectX problem that many are having, "done and dusted". Can you help please?
Cheers anyway!

Hi Puppyt !

Thank you !
:D

I am so sorry, but i am so busy.
I have to work a lot.
Im a terribly poor guy now...
I wish all the days i could make this project and packages...

I have played with counter-strike and some other program under wine and the directx worked for me but there was a switch to use wine opengl or directx default.

Directx... it depends on the linux driver and all the drivers include into one puplet makes brutal sized puppy...
It would be a good idea to create a fresh xp-like puppy from slacko with new programs and wine but i have no time now...

I would like to create a new one... planning... as soon as i can...
Overheads... food... money making at first... :?

Bye Bye !

Thanks s-kami -

I quite understand: real life must come first!
Thanks too for your tip with the Wine 'switch' - I've been trying different combinations and (some) error messages from terminal indicate GLX bugbears. Dunno how I first got it working with PolarPup but in that project I threw everything into it including Out house sinks - the remaster was about 800MB - so it was likely I had something accidentally correct. (Monkeys, typewriters and Shakespeare come to mind...)

I won't even tell you the troubles I had with Java classpath settings - but I had to install it twice (inside, and outside of Wine) to get various windows- and Linux- based applications going... :)

Best Wishes!

Puppy 007 in Budapest

#11 Post by Pelo »

XP was slow ! windows 007 much better. For fun (computer is for amusement only, in Pelo's studios) just loaded SevenPuppy from your new site. As the kernel marry with my dongle CSL connexion Wireless is prefect after having loaded the pet 8192CU.
This puppy007 speaks hungarian (magyar) but french too.
Browser Midori prevents me to surf the web, as my identification SSL fails. But with Chromium i surf where i like.
It was very kind to welcome to Linux newbies from Windows by a Windows like desktop. And to make french available beside Hungarian
Some hours to visit this Puppy will be necessary.. It is new for me !,

people feed back what works well,

#14 Post by Pelo »

Starhawk it is in the policy of the forum that people feed back what works well, pets and ISOs.
However if something wrong in Puppy 007, i think this Puppy is no longer supported. For me it's just a visit, Like old CDs you listen from time to time.
If people only subscribe to the forum to complain, our Puppy OS will loose lovers, excepted nurses and mechanics.
Of course, some message is behind my post, about DVD players, and how puppy-makers took care of newbies, a long time ago.
S-kami where is the hungarian 2PDE tahrpup ?

Yes, i am afraid of you are absolutely right.

Not to mention i have old machines and i have no money to buy newer and i dont need.

New puppies are too slow and big and not so easy as puppy linux was before.

Quite onestly some weeks before i found manjaro JWM edition.
Boots about 70 MB !!!
Fast and dozens of packages avaible.
On sunday i have download the world of padman 3D opengl games and play.
It is avaible only on old, well minded and supported puppies like precise was.

The machine is ASUS A9rP 1860 Mhz cpu, 879 MB ram, 60 GB hard disk and ATI’s Radeon Xpress 200M.

Manjaro JWM runs amazingly. Fast, secure and fresh with updater and package manager...

@Pelo -- I was simply expressing my surprise at seeing someone who is always complaining, say something that was not a complaint.

captains who leave their boats (PM for Starhawk)

#17 Post by Pelo »

I only complain about captains who leave their boats abandoned with people on board, as some painters, no longer interested by their last paint
A puppy available for download should be supported either by the creator or by users.
In France, our help desk still answer about Toutou 431, however Slaxen is the last version. But that should be a PM between you and Me, not here, in the hungarian Puppy topic.
s-kami and me are friends on Facebook, starhawk if you like personal messages, you will be welcome in Puppy-hu Facebook
Where is the topic about seven puppy, this one is about XP ?
Starhawk, any idea ?

I have no problems running current puppies in a machine with 512MB ram, and very old/slow video hardware...

I think that puppies should come with most tray apps/services disabled, asking the user if they want to enable those features (first boot).

It certainly can be quite faster... if you do a full install or if you repackage the SFS with no compression.

------------

I haven't seen screenshots.. but an XP puppy could use lxp-IceWM + some LXDE apps.

PcmanFM is an imitation of Windows Explorer... the same shortcuts, etc.

lxp-IceWM comes with XP themes already working flawlessly. Add a GTK2 XP theme.. you won't believe what you see.

Just giving some ideas.
