PupWin98.zip with Puppy 1.0.7, no floppy, no cd-rom

#1 Post by JaDy »

PupWin98.zip with Puppy 1.0.7 is now available here:
http://www.freeveda.org/linux/puppy/

Puppy Linux for Win98 works with Windows 98 with no need for floppy disk and no need for cd-rom drive.

This is Puppy Linux version 1.0.7 with Mozilla, re-packaged as a zip archive file with a few pieces added to run from your Windows 98 desktop. You'll need an un-zip program like ALZip or WinZip to handle the zip file.

This time with grub instead of tiny.

Very good, thanks! :P
I created a mirror:
http://dotpups.de/puppy-releases/1.0.7/puppy-for-Win98/

Note you can get pup001 in various sizes here:
http://dotpups.de/files/pup001-different-sizes/

I have to credit the maker of PupWin98. My search for linux started as an alternative to Winblows (Even with Zone Alarm and Norton AV I would have to make a reinstall almost every month). When I started I had no idea what linux is. I wanted the distro to be windows friendly i.e. no need to make a new partition & that it could be run from windows and stored on th FAT partition. There are only a few choices, namely dragonlinux (seemed to be promising but now discontinued), another distro I found had gone the windows way (Not free), then I found DSL & SLAX (both are good but I could not configure / did not know how to make a persistant storage like the pupxxx file), then I found pupwin98 (this is how I found puppy the long way). However this is not the end of the journey, I found puppy's interface to be very windows 95 like. After having used Xp for long time moving to that interface was easy (this justifies my efforts to improve puppys interface). So I tried a few other after pupwin98 but finally settled for puppy because of its ability of easy installation and persistent storage.

Note that pupwin98 install is now called FRUGAL intall = no cd bu completely live mode install. You have moved to using grub.exe from tiny.exe, can you make the grub.exe and menu.lst available as a zip over here so that I can test them.

Thanks

I added a new zip to the mirror, I replaced image.gz , vmlinuz and usr_cram.fs with 2-byte-files.

Output when I ran grub.exe from the command line

Code: Select all

Sorry! Currently supported DOS versions are: MS-DOS 3.30 and later; FreeDOS
kernel build 2029 and, hopefully, 2032 and later.

Programs such as TSRs and device drivers may also change the BIOS interrupt
vector table. Make sure those programs are not running, then try again.
I am using wakepup to boot. Wakepup uses FreeDOS kernel build 2035.

I've added the files from MU's mirror to puppyfiles.us at: ftp://puppyfiles.us/pub/releases/v1.0.7/ (I renamed the files to puppy-Win98*)

Can we see your grub.exe command line?
And the contents of menu.lst?
I've found that grub works best with empty (well, one blank line) autoexec.bat and config.sys files. Also, grub has strange ideas about drive names and file names should be lower-case.

Same output is generated on using the following commands

1. C:\grub.exe
2. C:\grub.exe --config-file=(hd0,0)/menu.lst

menu.lst contains
timeout 0
title Puppy Linux
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/puppy/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 acpi=off PFILE=pup001-none-262144 PHOME=hda3
initrd (hd0,0)/puppy/image.gz

Also note that my puppy files are stored on hda3(FAT), hda1 and hda2 are NTFS. But when wakepup boots it shows hda3 as C:\

I installed this, and it runs Puppy from the Win 98 desktop icon, so great.

Have I missed the point with this?

Do I have to boot Windows in order to boot Puppy, or can I make it give me the menu choice from power on, so I can boot straight to Puppy by selecting L?

I did not try, but if I see it correct:
Open c:\autoexec.bat in notepad.

replace the last line
win
with
c:\puppy\puppy.bat

My autoexec.bat contains:

@ECHO OFF

REM
REM The following lines have been created by Windows. Do not modify them.
REM
C:
CD C:\
CALL C:\PUPPY\PUPPY.BAT
C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM /W

My menu.lst contains:

timeout 0
title Puppy Linux
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/puppy/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 acpi=off PFILE=pup001-none-262144 PHOME=hda1
initrd (hd0,0)/puppy/image.gz

Is it the CALL C:\PUPPY\PUPPY.BAT? Should it say CALL? My distant memories of DOS were you just typed the filename, perhaps even just PUPPY?

My puppy.bat contains:

@ECHO Puppy Linux (/PUPPY/PUPPPY.BAT) 2005 1109 1315
@ECHO OFF
ECHO .
ECHO .
ECHO Without entry, will start Linux after 30 seconds.
ECHO .
ECHO . ! !
ECHO . ! !
REM Ready to run Linux or Windows. Press L or W :
choice /C:lw /N /T:l,30 Ready to run Linux or Windows. Press L or W :
if errorlevel 2 goto WIN
if errorlevel 1 goto LIN
:WIN
win
:LIN
C:\PUPPY\grub.exe --config-file=(hd0,0)/puppy/menu.lst
:end

Plase excuse my ignorance!

Hm, maybe this autoexec.bat is created if you run DOS from win98.
There also should be a autoexec.win , have a look at that, too.
I currently have no win9x here.

If the Dos-Editor "edit" or "edlin" is installed, you might exit Win98 completely, and then edit the "real autoexec.bat" from DOS.

It can be confusing, that Windows has 2 DOS-modes:
The "original" DOS, and the DOS, where Windows just hides itself, but is still running in background (that mode uses the autoexec.bat you posted, it "calls" Dos temporarily, and then goes back to Windows (win.com)).
Maybe if you hit "F8" or "F5" before Windows starts, you get a Dos-menu, that lets you start the "real DOS" or Windows.

With regard to using grub to load the linux kernel. How might I do this, but have it load from a CD-ROM, not HD.

I'm trying to launch a Linux kernel from DOS off a CD-ROM using GRUB.EXE

What am I missing?

#17 Post by Guest »

Hi-

I d/l'd the .zip & extracted, 1st, to a desktop folder- just to view the files that would be created.

I then cut & pasted them to "C:"- but there is already a "Windows" folder in the C drive (of course)- & it wants to overwrite it- which I will assume is a very bad thing?

What am I missing/not grasping?

I'm using 7-Zip to extract- I have no option RE" "Use folder names"- though I do end up w/a Puppy & Windows folder plus the usr_cram.

Help?
