Puppy Linux Virtual Machine Files

#1 Post by mayakovski »

Hello all;

I will be using this sticky to provide access and information for Puppy Linux running as a Virtual Machine using VMWARE's free player. If you want VM's for older versions let me know.

I will also be offering the ongoing 2.xxx development versions as well.

NOTE: For all future version I will be using .ZIP for compression due to compatibility issues with .RAR.

NOTE: Suggestions for a name for the virtual puppies would be welcome.

*********************************

THE PUPPY VIRTUAL MACHINES :)

Version: Puppy 1.0.7

VM Configuration:
128 MB RAM
500 MB Hard Drive
NAT for networking

Puppy Configuration:
Using Xvesa
800 x 600 x 16

Get the Puppy 1.0.7 VM here:
http://dotpups.de/puppy-releases/1.0.7/vmware/

----------------------------------------

Version: Puppy 1.0.6

VM Configuration:
128 MB RAM
500 MB Hard Drive
NAT for networking

Puppy Configuration:
Using Xvesa
800 x 600 x 16

Get the Puppy 1.0.6 VM here:
http://dotpups.de/puppy-releases/1.0.6/vmware/

*********************************

The VM Player:

Get the VM Player here:
http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

Install the VM Player:
Be patient it is a slow installing program, accept all the defaults unless you know what you are doing.

*********************************

Installing the Puppy:

The Puppy file is compressed using Winrar, so you will need that to unrar it, if you do not have winrar you can get the trial version from here:
http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar351.exe

Extract the files to a location on your computer. These files can be moved later with no ill consequences.

Start the VM player, when it asks for a file point it to where you extracted the Puppy 1.0.7 VM.

It will ask about the virtual machine's configuration file, choose "Create", which is the default.

It will complain that your G drive is not a CD Drive (if indeed it isn't), as that is what my drive was

set as when creating this puppy. This means that if your Cd Drive is not G you will not have access to a CD Drive in Puppy. Just click OK.

After that Puppy 1.0.7 should start the boot process using Grub with no timeout set. The rest of the process will be familiar to you.

*********************************

Controlling the VM Player:

To control Puppy just click once in the VM player (or press CTRL+G) to move mouse and keyboard control

into the player. To get control out of the Player and back to your main computer press CTRL+ALT.

Hmm..

I downloaded it right after uploading on my XP box and it extracted just fine.

What version of winrar are you using? I used the most recent to compress it.

I will download and try again.

WinRAR? No Windows, no WinRAR.

$ unrar --version
unrar 0.0.1 # Sounds very beta...

$ file-roller --version
Gnome file-roller 2.10.1

Can you upload a ZIP file as well?

The one from the Dotpups-wiki works (think I got it from there, not shure).
Here is just the binary for other Linuxsystems:
http://dotpups.de/puppy-releases/1.0.7/ ... r-3.50.tgz

It needs the "e" -switch:
unrar e Puppy-1.0.7-VM.rar

Thanks MU;

I appreciate it.

Maybe in future I should zip the VM's? What is the best method for general users?

ZIP. Its format is open. It's free to use. A lot of tools to
handle it.

ok, finished.
I did not check it.

http://dotpups.de/puppy-releases/1.0.7/ ... 0.7-VM.zip (66 MB).

I would delete the RAR-archive in 2 days, if the zip is ok for everybody.

Hi! The VMware version of Puppy works on my Windows XP computer. Puppy is very fast! My only complaint is that I cannot access any files on my harddrives when Puppy is running on the VMware player.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Sorry for the short reply, but I have to go.

Opps, I forgot something.

I understand that I cannot access my real harddrives from the VMWare machine. This situation is no big deal. I'm just testing some distributions of Linux.

The internet access works in Puppy.

I love puppy so much that I might burn a Live CD or install Puppy with Grub when I have more time.

But for now, I can play around with AbiWord and other nice office programs with Puppy and VMware player.

Bye!

Two attempts to download the .zip file from Mark's site failed about three quarters of the way through. But the .rar file downloaded and installed okay.

Puppy 1.0.7 runs really well under vmware. :)

I just downloaded the .ZIP file and it downloaded and unzipped and ran just fine. So I am not sure where the problem is coming from.

Can`t access Hard drives

Just a little thought, to access your hard drives whilst running puppy vm, you must remember to mount them first. Your c: drive wikll most likely be called swap.
