#1 Post by abushcrafter »

VLC latest stable version that works in puppy with support for all formats.

So for example it can play and convert theora video.

Please if you can face it!

Latest lighthouse pup has vlc 1.0 from vlc 1.0 pet. Try it first. The vlc 1.0 pet could be somewhere for downloading also. The original link for download is dead. Compiling vlc 1.0 is not easy if I have understood right. You can use search and see long thread about it.

All the best and Merry Christmas

Because It seams to be one of those bloody, pain in the back side ones and if I can't get zgv working then I doubt I can get vlc working until I have read most of the Linux manuals but if no one is going to I guess I could see/prove whether it fails.

I did not what to be demanding anyone to be my slave.

I do plan giving something back to the community:
Upload to some hosting sfs mods. So for instants goopenoffice with menu entries
Upload to some hosting my power user install of puppy 3.4.1 after a tidy up which includes removing my passwords :)

But of course that's going to take me a LONG time to get around to uploading and finishing being me.

I was semi serious for that very reason...but don't take it personally and yes it is a pain that no one wants to tackle...I was in that long thread that resulted in a partially working vlc at best...I think no mp4 or flv were sticking points.

I use a vlc from slackware but that was the gtk version and got away with it...I tried with the QT one but no go. Another point is that for general use the GTK version does the job...especially the ttuuxxx one that uses a fairly recent ffmpeg so again less incentive to get stuck in there. I think half the compiling problem is that the full vlc can do everything including making the coffee which makes compiling so tourtuous. Which also limits using say the debian compile because they enable everything so the list of dependancies is huge. When stripped down to planet earth levels its similar in size to gxine or mplayer.

The only thing I miss is the qt interface instead of the flaky, awkward, version specific wxwidgets one....indeed the qt side works ok..it was in the area of codecs that problems emerged.
The whole user interface side is a farce...I always use a skin so its only for menus/preferences...like why not use X (Xine) or fltk and save the megs?

I still use the old 0.8.6 package on puppies that run it. It plays flv, don't know about mp4 though

arr i see mike. I know I have been using tuxxxs compile, But it can't play theora video properly and it would be nice if it did. BTW I have been using the BigBuckBunny trailer as a very good open sourcy test video of which I think we should standardize as a test theora video!

Well apart from the usual saturated cpu it played just fine here...vlc 0.8.6c from slackware.....if there is this problem perhaps post on ttuuxxx's vlc thread about it.

Actually theora would be using external libraries....It may just be the specific plugin...I have swapped a plugin in the past to get dvd working rather than recompiling from scratch .
By the way I don't think the version I have is still there...It is from slacky.eu since the main slackware lot don't approve or something....indeed they say compile everything and don't use the packages??!!

Here is the post from another time which has the detail of my problem.

Code: Select all

puppy: fungl install 4.3.1
vlc 0.8.6h

FFmpeg version SVN-rUNKNOWN, Copyright (c) 2000-2007 Fabrice Bellard, et al.
  configuration: --arch=i486 --enable-libmp3lame --enable-liba52 --enable-libfaac --enable-libfaad --enable-pthreads --enable-small --enable-libogg --enable-libvorbis --enable-gpl --enable-shared --enable-pp --disable-debug --prefix=/usr
  libavutil version: 49.5.0
  libavcodec version: 51.44.0
  libavformat version: 51.14.0
  built on Jul 12 2009 11:29:41, gcc: 4.2.2
I have had a right pain with trying to play theora video and playing converted video from ffmpeg2theora. using vlc 0.8.6h I can play video like the big buck bunny trailer if I do Video>Video Track>Track 1 then I can see the video!

Converted video just gives me colored blocks but when played in vlc 1.0.2 portable vir wine or MPlayer 1.0rc2-3.4.4 off the forums I can watch it

Ok well I have ttuuxxx's version on another machine so I can compare and see if there is a fix...would save the hassle of trying to get 1.00 compiled ...watch this space

ffmpeg decoder warning: Missing extra data! (theora@0x835ee70)

seems to be relevant.

I tried my ogg demuxer plugin but no change.
ffmpeg is used rather than libtheora.

Since my version has ffmpeg compiled in the vlc binary I was limited.
The video does play in firefox 3.5 directly which at first surprised me and also showed that ffmpeg is ok (well it plays with your workaround) and that vlc/libvlc seems to be sending bad data to it.

MPlayer 1.0rc2-3.4.4 off the forums I can watch it
This is completely unrelated to Puppy's version of ffmpeg.
I explicitly compiled that verison of MPlayer against the Theora library, and libtheora is included in the dotpet
ie. there's an external shared library involved.
