Puppeee Arcade 2

#1 Post by sc0ttman »

Here is the Puppeee Arcade Homepage

Image

Description:

A user-friendly desktop distro with firedog browser suite, wbar on the desktop, an auto-hiding JWM taskbar with quick links, easier save-file management, many more apps and proper gaming as standard.

This is a Puppeee for Eee PCs, based on Puppeee431-beta3_3

Project Goals:

- introduce new users to Puppy Linux
- convert users of Eeebuntu, Xandros etc into permanent Puppy users
- be as user friendly and familiar as possible
- be a complete desktop distro - net, office, multimedia, games
- easy control panel and save file management
- maintain Puppys smaller memory requirements
- work well on crappier Eee PCs with limited space
- minimize disk writing and space requirements

Features:

Custom save script (/sbin/PuppySaveSetup) - The 'save' icon on the desktop checks if a savefile is being used and saves to it..
If no save file is being used, users are given a GUI to make one

Custom shutdown - if no save file is being used, a gui appears to create one before puppy shuts down.
If a save file is being used, users are asked at EVERY shutdown whether or not to save the session.

Better Control Panel - Added a whole new tab for all emulators. (screenshot)
Also included nearly all apps that can be configured through the control panel.

Download

Download eee-431.sfs: Mirror 1 (127mb, 62c6f0a96dfb61f2faa7a9ab48bcaae4)

You'll also need to download Jemimahs other files from here.
(not including eee-431.sfs, use mine)

Installation:

Backup!!! Then follow the install details here, but use my eee-431.sfs instead!
If you're using jemimahs 'Puppeee 431', you can just replace your eee-431.sfs file.

Changelog:

v2 - 16/01/2010
- based on puppeee 431 beta 3_3 (openGL works as standard, thx 2 jemimah!)
- moved wbar to top, going horizontal (better on some netbooks)
- improved /sbin/PuppySaveSetup - now works fine on all installs
- added save file prompt at shutdown - choose to save or not
- added a whole tab for the emulators in the Control Panel (screenshot)
- added custom Puppeee Arcade wallpaper
- cleaned up files that should've been deleted before
- replaced fce with wish rush file manager (edit: its missing 'ttk'!!)
- added missing menu entry for Commodore emulator
- added prboom and DoomPup frontend :)
- more right click options

v1
- Renamed to Puppeee Arcade

Packages Added:

Net: firedog, transmission
Office: goffice, gimp,
Multimedia: xvidcap, precord, pupRadio
Games: Puppy Arcade, Doom - thx 2 Ale :)
Tools: clex, htop, pupsaveconfig, controlpanel003, wbar, qemu, sakura, dougals remaster script, noblankscreen, picker, plus the latest zigbert apps (pmusic, pburn, pbackup, pfilesearch, pfind and more)

Nice job with this! My husband has already claimed my copy. :)

A bit of feedback.

-This appears to be based on beta3.1 not 3.2. It should still work fine with the latest kernel but a few bug fixes in 3.2 won't be there.

-You may want to delete /root/.flsynclient. It caused the touchpad on my 1000H to become very slow. Also you should delete /etc/acpi/wifi-driver /etc/acpi/wifi-interface and /usr/local/Pwireless2/interface. In certain circumstances, having wrong values in those files can cause problems.

-The psx emulator dies with an open-gl error. I've had some reports and confirmed myself that installing the xorg-full pet causes crashes on Puppeee, but I'm not sure what the problem is yet.
[Edit: wait that was you that reported it. Sorry I'm starting to have trouble keeping everything straight. I may end up having to upgrade xorg to fix the problem; I'll keep you posted.]

Keep up the good work. I'm excited to have your help!

Glad you like it, hope I'm not stepping on your toes, but thought I'd share what I use... In case anyone likes it...

Whoops! I'll update the next one!

Will do, I used Dougals remaster (simple) so was sure I missed a few things! Next time I won't be so lazy :)

I'd be very happy to get that fixed!

Not sure how much 'help' I'll be, but I'll do my best. :)

Also, I realise this puplet has a horrible name, so I'm thinking of renaming it, to avoid any confusion.. And am open to anyones suggestions...

You're not stepping on my toes at all; everything in open source is fair game. You've saved me the trouble of figuring out how to get Puppy Arcade to run on the new kernel.

This is what I use for remastering. Primitive, but precise. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=47469 It would also work great for small finishing touches after using the remaster script.

Have you considered naming it Puppeee Arcade? I know it's more than just games, but I think the brand recognition aspect would be useful.

I get the xorg/gl crash on my Eee even with standard puppy; seems to be a problem with the i915 driver not agreeing about something with xorg. I'll do some experiments and see; maybe just a libdrm update would fix it.

I got GL to work with a newer xorg that I got from here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=46266. You need the upgrade-vesa-intel pet and the synaptics pet.

There are some weirdnesses with the new version (black backgrounds on jwm menu icons), but as far as I can tell, nothing show stopping. I still need compile the synclient to make the touchpad toggle button and flsynclient work with the upgraded xorg. I may add this upgrade to beta 3.3 if I find it stable enough.

Edit: Further test results. I'm testing on beta 3.2 with the newer xorg. It crashes sometimes on startup. The black icons problem goes away if you pick 16bit color instead of 24. With the new xorg, you can use kernel modesetting which will give you native resolution on the console, and shave a few seconds from boot time. To turn it on add 'i915.modeset=1' to the end of your kernel line in grub or syslinux.cfg. Also, Xvesa doesn't work at all.

Good name!

But in case you want to keep your Arcade puplet the way it is now, try Scott Puppeee. :)

Yep, that'll do - I had considered it, as it's not much different from Puppy Arcade, me being the one-trick pony that I am...

I've renamed the thread and its homepage on mine...

And thanks jemimah for the SFS edit thing link, looks nice, can't believe I haven't used it before... Sorry raffy, if you'll need to re-edit some of your news pages!!

I've got the GL problem solved with the stable Xorg 7.3. I upgraded only libdrm and Mesa and the crash went away. I'm uploading the new version of Xorg_full_dri.pet now but it's taking forever over my 3G connection, so I'll let you know when it's ready.

Edit: The upload finally finished. Grab the new xorg-full pet from here:http://drop.io/puppeee_extras I removed a lot of unnecessary drivers so it's smaller than the original version. I may cut it further or include it by default in future puppeee versions.

Here's a fix so that the desktop drive icons don't appear underneath wbar. Decompress and place in /sbin.

Thanks very much.. I was clueless...

I wanna get an updated Puppeee Arcade online soon, with OpenGL working out of the box... So this is great.

I tested Puppeee Arcade on my 701. Wbar is too tall for the screen and for some reason that crashes the Rox Pinboard. It might be better to put wbar on the top or make it shorter by default.

I vote for including a C64 emulator in the next version. Of course if I manage to find a copy of Ultimate Wizard it might be a long time before the next version of Puppeee gets released. ;)

I thought sc0ttman was including a C64 emulator in the compilation... or is that just in the original version of Arcade?
[ Puppy 4.3.1 JP, Frugal install ] * [ XenialPup 7.5, Frugal install ] * [XenialPup 64 7.5, Frugal install] * [ 4GB RAM | 512MB swap ]
In memory of our beloved American Eskimo puppy (1995-2010) and black Lab puppy (1997-2011).

I've moved it on my savefile already, I think horizontal is better, at the top, so stuff doesn't get clicked on the way to the taskbar..

Frodo is already included in Puppeee Arcade, although no menu entry is available (whoops!).. You need to install Tcl/Tk, which is apparently not included in 431 (whoops again):

Download: tcl-8.5a4nothreads.pet, tk-8.5a4nothreads.pet

Now... To use Frodo:

Type 'Puppy-C64' or '/usr/local/frodo/Puppy-C64' in the terminal

The next Puppeee Arcade will use puppeee beta3_3 and will include all menu items, better control panel, better emulation options and a few more apps and tweaks...

I hope to get it done today!

dosbox 073

#18 Post by zicozico »

Hi Sc0ttman,

Just played a couple of hours with Puppeee Arcade.
(mostly doom :-))

Also noticed you have an old dosbox(0.71).
There's a newer one (slightly faster) 0.73.

I'll try to attach it.

I've mirrored the sfs at http://drop.io/puppeee

I really like what you've done with the wallpaper! Also wbar now works fine on a 7inch screen, and the mouse issue is fixed.
