Puppy Stardust 004

Stardust 005 is release here

This is still Puppy 4.3.1 - thanks to Barry for this wonder-OS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Focus on desktop flow and user easiness.
- Desktop in DeepThougt taken to next stage.
- Cleanup in apps, menus and kilobytes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments version 004
The changelog is not too long, but great stuff has come our way. Pnetnood has been replaced by patriots lameSMBexplorer. Last update of Pnethood was in april (if I remember correct), so this is really good news. You'll find it in the Network-menu. Tasmod and 01micko has created a clever tool - Startmount. It makes it easy to choose which drives to mount at startup. It has no menu-entry, but are reachable from pcc (puppy control center). New is also trios configuration tool for setting a startup sound (and shutdown). It is deactivated by default, but can easily be set from pcc.

Stardust 004 has reached 2 new goals:
1. Service management is 'complete' (as far as it is meant to be). You can now start/stop most background processes via pcc. The new stuff is that swallowed tray apps are configurable.
2. Tray management has reached a new level. Several tools in jwmconfig2 pack has been replaced by a rewritten Ptray. It now allows user to manage/edit up to 4 different trays. You should tray it out, it is powerful, - maybe too powerful......stupid actions leads to stupid results. Smile The underlying structure of tray-management is changed from Puppy 4.3.1. - so this Ptray is not plug'n play compatible with other Puppies.

There has been requests to install pcc on standard Puppy. It has now become flexible to only include links to installed apps, but it is still depending on some Stardust tools as the new Ptray. I will (in the future) release a startdust pack which includes all the modules to create a Stardust desktop. - pcc (with tools), jwmconfigs, icon-tools and rox-pinboard-tool. Pwidgets could be optional. Another issue is that Puppy 4.3 was built on Puppy 4.1, so updates (for Puppy 4.2) in theme-switcher, icon-switcher and fixmenus have not reached the official repo.

trio: I would be pleased if you give some feedback about the broadcom fix.
tasmod: I have not fixed the clock-hand-theme-bug (not forgotten).

Changelog since Stardust 003:
# Added lameSMBexplorer (patriot)
# Added Startmount (tasmod, 01micko) - mount drives at boot
# Added Pstartupsound (trio) - play sound at startup/shutdown
# Ptray is rewritten. It now handles all tray configuration.
# updated Pwireless2 (jemimah)
# updated Pseries
# removed Pnethood. replaced by lameSMBexplorer
# removed several scripts from jwmconfig2 pack. replaced by ptray
# PCC cleanup. Not hardcoded for Stardust. Should work with Puppy 4.x
# Bugfix: make vmlinuz executable. for broadcom fix. (thanks to trio)
# Bugfix: Worldtime widget didn't store settings. (thanks to tasmod)
# Bugfix 4.3.1: JWM tray configuration.
# Bugfix 4.3.1: JWM keyboard shortcut configuration.

BE AWARE!!!!
If you have Puppy installed, you MUST run this with the prefix 'puppy pfix=ram'. Else, the Stardust desktop will not install.

Here is the good old Stardust icon-theme updated for Puppy Stardust (thanks to 01micko)

The following list shows many items that is taken out of the iso. But, it is not as critical as it seems. Most of these are tiny apps, and you have not been aware of many of them. Simply because other apps do the job.

Aqualung has left, and Pmusic is back. Pmusic has evolved in both features and speed, so It is more a matter of longterm strategy. I hope it will be possible to build more around ffmpeg in the future. We could hopefully get rid of lidsnd, libsamplerate and maybe libxine...

Gadmin-Rsync is out as well, since it crashed on first run. I don't think Pbackup fill the backup issue completely. It would be wonderful if there exists a tiny but complete backup suit.

If you see something that you would have changed, added or removed, I will be very glad if you mentioned it. Because of my limited time, it would be best if you deliver the patch.... My knowledge of network/internet tools is close to zero, so these are nearly untouched.

Possible improvement is easy to see
- icon theme in vector graphics for space saving.
- alternative multimedia tools using ffmpeg.
- hunt more files we don't need.
- upgrade gui in some of the scripts.
- extend the control center.
- replacement of Gparted (901kb)
- boot Puppy with pfix=fsck
- compile mhwaveedit without libsndfile
- driver adds/updates
- ...

This is meant to be a full featured user-oriented Puppy....Though, I have to admit that the biggest modem drivers is removed.

So what's added
- Stardust desktop environment - including pcc (Puppy control center), desktop configuration tools and Pwidgets
- Pwireless2 (replaces Pwireless)
- ATI graphic drivers
- Broadcom wifi drivers
- Pmusic (replaces aqualung)
- woo-ff
- printoxx
- floppy-formater (replaces floppy-format.sh)
- getez (replaces PmirrorGet)
- acpid
- gtkmoz (replaces PuppyBrowser)
- Pupradio (replaces pstreamvid)
- seahaven
- lameSMBexplorer (replaces pnethood)
- pstartupsound
- startmount

And what does the Stardust-generator change
- Install desktop at first startup rather than keep it in the iso to save space
- snap desktop icons - medium grid
- simple Pmount facelift
- Xlock is fixed
- start pCD instead of defaultmediaplayer when click on audio-CD icon
- seamonkey buttons
- defaultaudioplayer is changed from aqualung to pmusic
- Updated P-series
- Net-setup goes to Pwireless2 for wireless configuration
- CD/DVD wizard is cleaned up
- Darker background color in: rxvt, geany, abiword

And of course, something had to leave
*** Programs ***
- aqualung
- libmad
- madplay
- burniso2cd
- cdp
- cgtkcalc
- didiwiki
- e3
- floppy-format.sh
- gcolor2 (color chooser)
- gdmap
- gexec
- gfnrename - maybe better than PRename, but this is bash and easy updated.
- glightoff
- gtkdialog markup editor - devx ???
- gtklogfileviewer - Does any script use anymore ???
- gtksourceview
- Net-setup (old version)
- nicoedit
- pcdripper
- Pdisk - could maybe be in use by some wizard
- picpuz
- pictureviewer
- pmirror/mirdir
- pmwget (PMirrorget)
- pnetnood
- pplog
- pstreamvid
- ptooltips - tool to show tooltips in gtkdialog - not longer in use
- PuppyBrowser
- PuppyPdf - Abiword does exactly the same
- Pwireless
- quisp
- rsync / gadmin-rsync - crashes on first run
- securetelnetshell
- tile
- waveplay - linked to aplay
- xAutoconnect - Pwireless2 should do the job
- xcalc
- xclipboard
- Xconsole
- xfontsel
- ycalc
- zfind

*** Trimming ***
- cdrkit - Pburn has very few dependencies
- libsnd (only mhwaveedit (aqualung) use libsnd)
- jwmconfig2

*** Control panel has ditched some ***
- countrywizard
- XserverWizard
- wizardwizard
- And plenty of menu items

*** Graphics ***
- All wallpapers
- some Gtk-themes
- All Icon-themes
- many mini-icons

*** misc ***
- some apps NOT in control center has also lost their place in the menu
--> sfs-version-converter - warnings pointing to it is changed.
--> Pstopwatch - Ptimer should be enough.
- some documentation files
- some audio files
- the biggest modem drivers
- many fixed fonts

Puppy 4.3.1 Bugfixes
- JWM tray configuration.
- JWM keyboard shortcut configuration.
- Xlock - Lock screen.
- Kill pid of wallpaper setter when closing window.
- Shutdown / Reboot from menu after NFS error.

Subject description: become a multiuser

Hi, i have tried the multi-user version of Pizzasgood so far it was good.
I am using your puplet( v 003) and it was also cool especially the compactness of Puppy Control Center. So far, I don't have any problem to these puplets.

Is there any possibility that this add-on (mutiple user logins) feature be included in your stardust series? I don't know about integrating this functionality to the puppy releases. Is there a pet somewhere?

I will also try this new Stardust v 004. Thank you.

Regards,

Eric

Hi zigbert I made a very small version of XChat for Quirky that saves 600kb compressed over Ayttm http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?mode=attach&id=25174 It might work on Stardust, they could always install Ayttm later on if need be.

Odd.... StartMount does not work for me. Recognises the drive correctly (sda3) but fails to mount it. Wlan0 is seen as etho1, and little icon is missing in boot config screen. Guess it is in the wrong place.

Hmm, actually that's not the problem I thought it was. I presume it works?

Sure it does, but you know what? using this system, it takes way longer each boot before I have a working wifi connection than in generic 4.3.

Multiuser is not the focus right now. The target of Puppy Stardust is to be stable and conservative, rather than dancing on the bleeding edge.

01micko

Thank you for delta files

trio (and all others)
I want to explain the 'nature' of Puppy Stardust.
Stardust is not a normal Puplet. It is not built from unleashed, woof or a remaster. I have made a script that unpacks a Puppy iso, makes changes, - and rebuilds it. For what reason????? - To be flexible of the Puppy-base. Now it is Puppy 4.3.1, tomorrow maybe another. This is the reason why I don't like touching core files. - A patch must be patched another time when the base changes. You made a patch for Pwireless2-2.5. I noted that I have upgraded to 2.6, and you made a new patch. jemimah then released 2.7 (which is in Stardust 004), and I should have noted again...... Dear Trio, it would be an endless patch-job........ Very Happy

It must be said; There is some patching in my stardust build-script. I don't patch packages, but instead makes the patches using sed..... An example is the improved alignment in Pmount. I could have done a lot more by rewritten some of the gui-code, but I really don't want to redo coding every time Barry releases a new version of Pmount. Instead I let sed make simple fixes of what I think will work in the following Pmount releases.

BTW, did the broadcom work out of the box?

Thank you for your great attitude and effort Exclamation
Sigmund

I don't know anything about chatting, but I see that ayttm supports many protocols, and xchat only supports irc. Have you got any feedback about this.....???

It would sure be wonderful to loose 600kb Smile
