Gecko Edubook
Based on the reply email I received, they're distributing the first prototype for US$150. After that, only the barebones version (no wifi, no SD card, no batteries) will get shipped for $150. There are still issues with the prototype, like neither Flash 10 nor the new Skype is working.

write back and tell them to send a free promotional Gecko to BK and then in a very short time the graphics will be so right they will jump right out of the Gecko.sidders wrote:I got a reply
I am a big fan of Puppy. I have tried to load the lastest Puppy on the Edubook but had a couple of issues. I am not sure what they are. The unit boots but it doesn't get the graphics quite right and doesn't get the sound.
I do hope that Puppy is one of the featured OS' on the Edubook.

If you go to there pricing quote area, Puppy Linux is already an option, they must of found some fixes or something.
Also I think they should donate like $2 each unit that they sell with puppy on it, Back to Barry. That would be a nice thing to do.

I found a similar machine under a different name. It is listed under US$190 here: http://qbitonline.com/product_info.php? ... s_id=17844
Considering that its only got 512MB...puppy or other lite linux are probably the only OS it can run...
Too bad it is not free like the name implies...ha!ha!

Just received my EduBook...
A couple days ago I received my new EduBook from Norhtec. After the exchange rate (US to CAD), shipping, duty, and taxes, the cost came to $240 and change. That was for the bare-bones EduBook with 512MB of RAM and a power cord (no HDD, no Wi-Fi, no batteries).
I installed the latest version of Puppy on to it and it works wonderfully, except for sound. For the life of me, I cannot get the sound "card" recognized.
I've also tried a few other light-weight Linux distros on the EduBook (even WattOS, which NorhTec says they ship with the EduBook), but either they didn't boot up or could not detect nether the sound card or ethernet port.
All in all, the EduBook is pretty good for what it is. Although, if watching videos is something you want to do, this isn't the best choice (especially with no sound). However, web browsing and light office duties suite it just fine. I have not come across a webpage yet that could not be displayed. Even my eyeOS web-desktop works great with it (and SeaMonkey).
If anyone is interested, this weekend I'll be posting a more complete review (with video) on my blog.. so I'll post a link here when I'm done.
I've e-mailed NorhTec for some help, to see if I can get sound working with Puppy. No reply as of yet. I'd really like to get sound working so, at least, I could listen to my MP3s and OGGs with the thing.

Hi Barry they just use this type of rechargeable battery, I've used this type before in my RC planes http://shop.ebay.com.au/?_from=R40&_trk ... Categories Higher the mAh value the longer it will last.BarryK wrote:Do you know anything about the batteries that are used in the Edubook? They are AA yes, but a type that you can't buy in a supermarket or hardware store, so I was wondering where you would get them from -- is there an online supplier that would sell them cheap?

I'm just using some regular NiMH rechargeable AA batteries (Ray-O-Vac brand, to be precise). They're 2500 mAh and they work wonderfully. They last about four hours, in the EduBook, before requiring recharging.BarryK wrote:Do you know anything about the batteries that are used in the Edubook? Photos and Benchmarks
Hello folks, just dropping in, since you guys are discussing the Edubook.. I received my unit a few days ago from an alternate supplier, and have taken a few benchmarks on it. Windows XP though, since it didn't come from NorhTec.. sorry =( Photos of the unit and benchmark screenshots are at http://www.flickr.com/photos/46578721@N ... 079189553/

Looks like many retailers are selling it now. Here is a video of it from another vendor too:
